One of the good things about the forthcoming General Election is that people are now talking about something other than just Brexit. The main point, for me at least, is that the countdown to the election is being quoted more than the number of shopping days to Christmas. This means there is a good possibility that this year, at least, we might get a chance to celebrate Advent. We don’t generally celebrate Easter for weeks before the actual date, but somehow it is fine to celebrate the birth of Christ for weeks and weeks. Advent is one of the most important liturgical seasons, nevertheless, of the past thirty or more years it has gradually been swallowed up in a pre-Christmas binge. Instead of thinking about The Christ who lived a life in love and sacrifice, we have a period of frenzied celebration supposedly in anticipation of his birth. However, the financial splurge that accompanies this Advent period is in stark contrast with the real meaning of the season and the birth they are celebrating. Born in a stable, His early life was as a refugee fleeing from a death threat. Later, He travelled around the country with no fixed abode. He was tortured by an invading, oppressive regime and finally He died as a convicted criminal. Surely, an overindulgent food and drink fest is a strange way to celebrate such a life, unless of course, you have a faith in God. If you are a person of faith would you not want to prepare yourself in a spiritual way for this great anniversary and try to unite yourself with this iconic role model? 'Year of Communion' Bishop Declan invites you to the launch of the 'Year of Communion' on Friday 22nd November at 7.00pm at Clifton Cathedral. It will be a celebration of
Evening Prayer during which, each parish will be presented with the
resources for the Year of Communion, which starts on Sunday 1st December.
Everyone is welcome to attend.

Darkness to Light Advent Service, Sunday, 1st December, at 6.30pm
at St Mary Magdalene Church We have been invited to join with St
Mary Magdalene Church for the ‘Darkness to Light’ Advent Service.
The service starts in candlelight & will comprise of interesting & stimulating music as well as classic advent carols, together with readings in preparation for the Christmas season. Please do

MONTH OF THE HOLY SOULS During the month of November we
pray for the Holy Souls. We also remember those dear to us who have died, family & friends & the deceased of our parish. Throughout this month those names placed in the Holy Soul Box will be prayed for at all Masses.
Please place your list of names in the Holy Souls Box in the church.
FIRST HOLY COMMUNION FORMS NEED TO BE IN BY NEXT SUNDAY
If your child is in Year 3 or above and you would like him/her to make
his/her First Holy Communion in 2020, please email the Rectory to

Full details & an Application Form will be emailed to those who have registered their child; application
forms are also available at the back of both churches. Sessions for the children will start in January 2020.
Closing Date for applications will be Sunday, 24th November; late applications may not be accepted.

First Communion Catechists Required
More people are needed to help prepare the children on this year’s
First Communion programme. Preparation sessions will begin in
January & take place in the Catholic Centre on a Saturday afternoon
between 4.30 - 5.15pm. If you feel you could help please speak to Mgr Bernard or email the parish office.
Catholic Singles, for those aged 18 years & over, is an organisation
which helps single Catholics of all ages meet other single Catholics,
