Mass Intentions
My Family of Faith:
In our continued discussion on reverence I want to address
this week our posture. Last week one of our daily Mass gospels was
from Luke 5: 1-11, this is the famous story of Jesus asking Peter to
lower his nets once again for a catch. Begrudgingly, Peter does, and
when he pulls back the nets they are surprisingly full, so full they
almost tear. At this miraculous sight Peter fell to the knees of Jesus.
This passage from Scripture makes clear that our outward postures is
a language. Scott Hahn brilliantly address this in his book “Signs of Life: 40 Catholic Customs
and Their Biblical Roots.”
We are composed to body and soul and, as Romano Gaurdini put it, “every part of the
body is an expressive instrument of the soul. The soul does not inhabit the body as a man inhab-
its a house. It lives and works in each member, each fiber, and reveals itself in the body’s every
life, contour, and movement.” Thus the soul expresses itself in our prayer, whether private or
liturgical, not only by our words but by our gestures and by the way we comport ourselves.
The Bible speaks of several postures of prayer: standing, kneeling, bowing, and prostra-
tion. The Church uses all of them at different and appropriate times.
Kneeling is another Gospel practice that we incorporate into the body language of our
prayer life. In the New Testament, kneeling is the prayer posture of mothers, rulers, lepers, and
Jesus himself (see Mt 8:2, 9:18, 15:25; Lk 22:41). St. Paul is pleased to say: “I bow my knees
before the Father” (Eph 3:14).
But, standing too, gives expression to the prayers of our heart. Here’s Father Guardini
again: “Standing is the other side of reverence toward God. Kneeling is the side of worship in
rest and quietness; standing is the side of vigilance and action. It is the respect of the servant in
attendance, or the soldier on duty. When the good news of the gospel is proclaimed, we stand
up...Bridegroom and bride stand when they bind themselves at the altar to be faithful to their
marriage vow.”
Yet we spend much of our liturgy neither kneeling or standing – and certainly not pros-
trate. For the reading from the Old Testament, for example, we sit down. This, however, is hard-
ly a neutral posture. When we sit, we assume a receptive position. We are listening, taking in the
Word of God.
In prayer, every traditional posture is rich in meaning, as is every gesture.
My friends, whether standing, sitting, or kneeling, these postures and gestures express
the attitudes of our hearts. When the priest and the faithful genuflect before the Eucharist, they
express their faith in the real presence of Jesus Christ in the sacrament of the altar. These sorts of
postures reflect heavenly behavior, as Revelation puts it: “fall down before the one who sits on
the throne and worship him, who lives for ever and ever” (Rev 4:10).
God bless,

Mission Appeal Next Weekend
On the weekend of September 23/24, Fr. Myron Effing,
C.J.D., from the Most Holy Mother of God parish in Vla-
divostok, Russia, will visit our parish to speak about the
Roman Catholic Mission Churches in Eastern Russia. A
special offering will be taken for the missions. In the ear-
ly 1900’s, the Russian Far East boasted a thriving Roman
Catholic population. Many Russians, Poles, Lithuanians,
and other groups inhabited the area and had built schools,
hospitals, and beautiful churches. After the revolution of
1917, Russia became an emblem of the Communist era, a
land without churches and without God. Under Stalin, all
Catholic churches were confiscated and Dioceses closed.
Most churches were desecrated or destroyed. Catholics
were murdered by the hundreds of thousands and their
bodies dumped into mass graves. Our two American
priests, Fr. Myron Effing, CJD, and Fr. Daniel Maurer,
CJD, arrived in Vladivostok in 1992 to help re-establish
the Church in this region and provide charitable assis-
tance to the many poor. Now that the foundations have
been laid, additional priests and sisters are joining the
work, and parishes are growing and multiplying, very
slowly, but surely. For the latest news on activities of the
mission and the Catholic Church in Russia please visit the
website at www.vladmission.org
Presbyteral Assembly This Week
Father Chad will be attending the Presbyteral Assembly
in the Wisconsin Dells. There will be no Holy Masses
Sept. 18, 19 or 20. Please keep all our priests in prayer.

IHM CATHOLIC SCHOOL
Help Needed - Volunteer Catechists/Aides
The Family Formation program (K-6) is still in need of
volunteers! We have two spots remaining for teachers,
but have a great need for classroom aides in all grades.
Family Formation only meets once per month, so the time
commitment is minimal. If you teach in the Family Pro-
gram, your lessons are prepared for you and you receive
monthly training. No experience is necessary, but you
must be a practicing Catholic in good standing with the
church and enjoy working with children. This is a great
opportunity for middle/high school students who need
service hours or just want experience (their faith for-
mation classes DO NOT meet on the nights K-6 meets).
We also welcome older adults to help us out and would
love their presence in our classrooms! Please contact
Laura at [email protected] to volunteer or with any
questions about the program.
We are also in need of someone to coordinate Child
Care for our monthly family meetings. The commit-
ment would be once per month (typically the first
Wednesday of the month) from 5:45 p.m. until 7:15 p.m.
A great opportunity for high school students or retired
adults! All children will be potty-trained, and activities
would be provided.
Catechetical Sunday This weekend, the Church cele-
brates Catechetical Sunday. The
theme is "Living as Missionary Dis-
ciples." On this Sunday, we recog-
nize those who have been called to
serve as catechists - those who
teach the Catholic faith to oth-
ers. Catechetical Sunday is also a
wonderful opportunity to reflect on the role that each one
of us plays, by virtue of our Baptism, in handing on the
faith and being a witness to the Gospel. This includes
parents, grandparents and godparents, as well!
May God bless all of our school teachers and those who
serve as catechists in our Religious Education ministries
for children and adults. Thank you so much for sharing
your gifts of time and talent in passing on the Catholic
faith to others.
Prayer for Catechists
O God, our Heavenly Father, you have
given us the gift of these catechists to be
heralds of the Gospel to our parish family.
We lift them up to you in thanksgiving
and intercede for them concerning their
hopes and needs.
May we be attentive to the presence
of your Word in them, a Word that lifts up
and affirms, calls forth and challenges, is
compassionate and consoles.
We pray that our parish family will always
be blessed with those who have responded to
the call to share in Christ’s prophetic mission
as catechists. May we too be open to the
universal call to service that Christ addresses
to all of his disciples, contributing our gifts to
the communion of faith, the Church.
We ask this in Jesus’ name.
Amen.
Safe Environment in our Parish and Diocese

ish and school are required to complete the Protection
