Dear Parishioners, Today’s Gospel, and particularly the parable of the prodigal son, reminds us of the merciful love that God the Father has for all of us, his children. Jesus depicts so poignantly the love found in the character of the father who runs out to greet his wayward son before he is even home – and who celebrates his son’s safe return with the feast of a fatted calf. We might wonder how a father can be so quickly and completely forgiving of a son who prematurely took a share of the father’s

wealth (to which he was not even entitled, because he was not the older son and heir), abandoned the family, and wasted the hard-earned money on immoral and reckless acts. But Jesus reminds us, as he did the Pharisees and scribes at the beginning of the Gospel, that God the Father himself is merciful, for Jesus was sent to encourage sinners to turn away from their sins and toward God. These readings challenge us on many levels. If we are like the young-er, prodigal son, it might be hard to imagine that God could forgive us for the wrongs we might have done, for the times that we turned away from God. But in the second reading, Paul reminds Timothy that God not only forgave him for his persecution of the Church, he called Paul to great glory as an Apostle. Paul describes himself as the foremost of sinners, who was mercifully treated, so that in me, as the foremost, Christ Jesus might display all his patience as an example for those who would come to believe in him for everlasting life. Through his mercy for this most zeal-ous persecutor of the early Christians, Jesus gave Paul the grace to be-come one of his greatest advocates and one of the shining stars of the Church. If any of us feel that we have committed some wrong that can’t be forgiven – or have strayed so long that we can’t be welcomed back – we can take courage and comfort from these readings. But, just as the readings encourage us to accept the mercy of God, they also challenge us to extend God’s mercy to others. For we also know that the measure we give to others is what we shall receive. We are forgiv-en, as we forgive. And we have this good news to share with anyone who needs to hear it: come home! So, let us then accept God’s mercy, extend it to others and rejoice, as the Father commands us, when those who are lost return home.

    SCHOOL HAPPENINGS

THE PILGRIM CRUCIFIX OF VOCATIONS At Bishop Cantú’s 25th Anniversary Mass in May, principals and pastors were gifted with a crucifix which the Bishop hoped would be passed around the community as a remind-er to pray for vocations. Each week, our school community gathers during Morning Assembly to pray the Vocations Prayer together. As we pray, a representative from the class who hosted the crucifix the previous week processes the crucifix around the gathered assembly and hands it off to the next class who will host the crucifix. In each host classroom, teachers facilitate conversations surrounding the Culture of Vocations: vocations to religious life, priesthood, married life and the single life. Our school has committed to journey alongside those who are discerning their vocations and we are seeking to understand how we are being called to live out our baptismal promise. FALL SPORTS BEGINS AT ST. CLARE We are grateful to our parish community for sharing the use of St. Clare Hall where some of our sports teams practice and host league games. Support our athletes by cheering them on at home games or making a donation towards the sports program. • TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

Although New Year’s Day has been fixed firmly on Jan-uary 1 for several hundred years, Labor Day has the feel of a great dividing line between leisure and routine. The pace of life has since picked up, and new schedules and commit-ments crowd us. In the background is God’s call to consider the third commandment, still life giving and binding, to make holy the Lord’s Day by worship and rest. Jews see the Sabbath, Saturday, not so much as a day of worship, but as a day of rest, a day of renewing friendship with God by de-lighting in the beauty of creation and the joy of family and friends. It is a day for contemplating the wonder of God’s creation, but not disturbing it. For Christians in the first three centuries, the Lord’s Day, Sunday, was not for rest, but worship. It was a regular work day. People met before dawn, and after Eucharist hur-ried off to daily routines. Today we come to Mass, but many hurry off to essential work, not a day of rest. The Lord’s Day is not the Sabbath, but we can enhance Sunday’s ability to transform us if we consider embracing some Sabbath val-ues: having a family meal, going for a walk in a beautiful place, making room in our lives to open ourselves more fully to holiness of life in Christ.—James Field, Copyright © J. Catechetical Sunday

This weekend, the Church in the United States celebrates Catechetical Sunday. The theme is "Stay with Us." On this Sunday, we recognize those who have been called to serve as catechists. Catechetical Sunday is also a wonderful opportunity to reflect on the role that each one of us plays, by virtue of our Baptism, in handing on the faith and being a witness to the Gospel. May God bless all who serve as catechists in our school and our Faith Formation ministries for children and adults. Thank you very much for sharing time and talent in pass-ing on the Catholic faith to others!

Prayer for Catechists - USCCB O God, our Heavenly Father, you have

given us the gift of these catechists to be heralds of the Gospel to our parish family.

We lift them up to you in thanksgiving and intercede for them concerning their

hopes and needs. May we be attentive to the presence

of your Word in them, a Word that lifts up and affirms, calls forth and challenges, is

compassionate and consoles. We pray that our parish family will always

be blessed with those who have responded to the call to share in Christ’s prophetic mission

as catechists. May we too be open to the universal call to service that Christ addresses to all of his disciples, contributing our gifts to

the communion of faith, the Church. We ask this in Jesus’ name.

    Amen.

— Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright © J. S. Paluch

Registering in a parish is a declaration of your desire to be part of a Catholic community and a commitment in all its dimensions brings you advantages,

recognition, and responsibilities of many kinds. Being a registered parishioner makes things much easier when it is time for infant Baptism, weddings, when

asked to be a Baptismal or Confirmation Sponsor and even funerals. We are often asked to provide affidavits for Baptismal and Confirmation Spon-

sors. We can only do this if a person is a registered, active and contribution member.

So, are you a registered parishioner? If not please consider registering. Registration forms are available in the Parish
