REFLECTING ON THE GOSPEL

Who doesn’t love a good dinner

party?! Great food, excellent

company, good wine, and lively

conversation. Jesus certainly

enjoyed himself at such events and

was considered by some to be a

glutton and a drunkard! In today’s

gospel Jesus is being hosted by a

leading Pharisee. This was likely an

extravagant event and certainly

wasn’t Jesus’ first or last such

dinner. The first piece of advice

Jesus gives is hardly unique to

Christianity or even rooted in his

identity as Son of God. Instead, it’s

practical advice reminiscent of

Greek philosophers and good

Jewish etiquette. In fact, it sounds

much like modern-day Miss

Manners! The aphorism, “Everyone

who exalts himself will be humbled,

but the one who humbles himself

will be exalted,” will be repeated

later in the gospel. The second piece

of advice culminating in a promise

to be “repaid at the resurrection of

the righteous” is rooted more in

religious identity and a belief that

there would even be a resurrection

of the righteous. To receive such an

invitation, Jesus implores his host to

invite “the poor, the crippled, the

lame, the blind.” In other words,

invite those people who cannot

reciprocate. By so doing, God him-

self will reciprocate on their behalf!

So we have two lessons from

today’s reading: humble oneself and

serve those who cannot reciprocate.

There is certainly more to the entire

gospel message than that, but it is

an excellent place to start.

Moreover, both can be done in

imitation of Jesus himself, who truly

humbled himself and served us, we

who cannot truly reciprocate.

NEW CLASS STARTING SOON St. Patrick’s Bible Study class is about to begin a new

series titled “MOSES AND THE TORAH.”

Consider joining us for this important foundational

study. You will be amazed at what you learn! We start

with an opening prayer, then we watch a video

presentation given by Sharon Doran of Seeking Truth

Bible Study. “Few people have the gift Sharon has for

connecting faith and life. Listen to her and you will find

God’s word abiding deeply in the midst of your world,”

Dr. Tim Gray. Sharon's use of visuals and art in her fast

paced lectures holds our attention and makes scripture

more understandable. After the video presentation, we

will dive into discussion questions, share our new

insights and deepen our faith together. ALL ARE

WELCOME!

This new series has 23 lessons. We gather

weekly on Monday mornings from 9:15 to 11:00 A.M.,

OR Thursday evenings from 7:00 to 8:30 P.M., except

for holidays. The first Monday class is

expense. To register, please contact one of the

facilitators: Dave Bernklau: [email protected],

Kathy Hostetler: [email protected] or Bill

NEW CHILD PROTECTION

REQUIRMENT

All Church staff and volunteers who work with

children under the age of 18 years of age are

required to attend a 90 minute presentation

entitled, C.A.S.E. Creating a Safe

Environment. This is a 90 minute film

the place this year of the on-line tutorial

typically required as on-going Child Protection

Education. Currently we have 3 CASE

presentations scheduled for September and 1

for October. All presentations are scheduled

for Tuesday evenings from 6:30-9:00 pm. Here

at St. Patrick our goal is to have ALL

Catechists and Volunteers complete their

required training by October 15, 2019. In

addition to the 4 scheduled training's at St.

Patrick you may go on-line to the Office of

Child Protection at the Archdiocese of Portland

web-site for additional training times and places

at parishes throughout the diocese. Upon

completion of your training you will receive a

certificate which demonstrates your completion

of the course. You may contact Sara Creel or

Jerry Giger for more information. St. Patrick

training dates are: Tuesday, September 10,

WHY SHOULD I BE INTERESTED IN RCIA? I’M ALREADY CATHOLIC Every year as the new program year is about to begin

Catholic Churches all over the United States begin to

talk about RCIA, the Rites of Christian Initiation of

Adults. Every year pulpit announcements are made

inviting those who would like to know more about

the Catholic Faith to attend RCIA sessions beginning

in the Fall. Yet during this time of crisis in the

Church fewer and fewer people seem to be interested

in learning more about the Catholic faith. Perhaps

we say to ourselves, “well, what can I do about it?”

Actually quite a lot.

If someone were to ask you, “What is the most

important thing in your life?” My guess is that most

of us would say, “My faith. My belief in God. My

faith in the sacraments.” Yet if we were each asked,

“How well can you articulate your faith?” Would

you feel comfortable helping someone who knows

little about what Catholics believe learn about the

things you trust in, believe in, and how and why you

worship?

When was the last time you, as an adult, spent time

investigating your own faith and its

practices? When you were confirmed? In a

college religion class? While we expect our

doctors, attorneys, bankers, IT people, even our

grocers to stay informed on the ins and outs of their

respective fields, do we take the time or make it a

priority to know as much as we can about the very

thing that has eternal effect on and for our lives?

Perhaps this is the year to make the choice to learn

more, understand more, and deepen your experience

in your own Catholic faith. The more we know about

our own Catholic faith the more effective we can be,

especially in this time of crisis when so many see the

sin of the Church and are blinded to the presence of

Christ which has held us together for 2000 years.

RCIA has something to offer you. Perhaps you have

something to offer those who do not yet know Christ

in the Church.

YOU’RE INVITED TO JOIN THE
