A message from your Pastor
Dear Brothers and Sisters,
Peace of Christ Jesus! Thank you for all of your help, support and prayers that so many have given during these unprecedented times. While you were not able to attend Mass, St. Thomas More remained very much open for funerals, confessions, visits to the Blessed Sacrament, counselingand support for the poor and struggling. I am so proud of our faith community!
I want to take this opportunity to let you know how grateful I am to all who have continued to support our parish financially by mailing or dropping off budget envelopes, donating via Faith Direct (FD) - our on-line giving provider, and to the 62 new parishioners who have moved to donating via FD since the end of March. I’d also like to thank our “virtual parishioners” who have “joined” our parish via live stream from many states as well as countries and who have also provided financial support to St. Thomas More Parish. We are so blessed!
As you are aware, we successfully re-opened St. Veronica Chapel at the end of May and two weeks ago St. Thomas More, thanks to help from our Knights of Columbus, dedicated staff and volunteers. Parishioners were eager to return to Mass to receive the Holy Eucharist! However, since the church was closed for 16 weeks and upon re-opening, attendance was limited to 25% capacity, the parish experienced a significant decrease in the weekly offertory collections.
With that being said, the overall budget is down $53,175 (i.e., a 9% decrease) for fiscal year ending June 30, 2020 and it is projected that by summer’s end, we will be 20% below budget as many tourists and part-time parishioners will simply not be able to come and worship.
The weekend of July 4th, we hold our Annual Parish Collection where the monies collected go towards special projects (e.g., generator, painting etc.). However, this year the collection which usually amounts to $23,000 will certainly fall short. In an effort to offset this decreased offertory, we will be holding a St. Thomas More Feast/July summer raffle. If you are able, we ask that you purchase the enclosed raffle tickets and return to the parish office. The proceeds from the raffle after the prize money is distributed, will go towards the regular operating budget as this is where our greatest need is at this time. Please know I am aware that some of you are not able to give financially but your prayers for our community are just as, if not more, important!
One last bit of news to share…. during the closure, work continued and was completed on the renovated parish hall and new kitchen. We were blessed to have Bishop Tobin’s first parish visit since February be at St. Thomas More on June 21st to bless the new hall and kitchen and to present Governor Donald Carcieri with the St. Thomas More Medal of Virtue.
Please know of my deepest appreciation, joy and pride in serving as your Pastor and for coming together as one in prayer in these days. Jesus I trust in you!
Fr. Taillon, your “real and virtual” Pastor
