REFLECTING ON GOD’S WORD Imagine a large group of travelers, lost in the midst of a dense forest on a starless black night. They cannot see the path; they cannot even see each other. Little by little they wander in different directions, trying desperately to find their way forward through the immense trees, all the while spreading further and further apart. Suddenly a bright white lantern shines from the edge of the forest. Their fear flees with the darkness. As they head toward the light they rejoin one another and rejoice to discover the one way out of the forest. The imagery of light in the darkness threads its way through the Sundays of Ordinary Time between Christmas and Lent. It reminds us that the Light of the World, whose dawning we celebrated during the Advent/Christmas season, is the same light of Christ whose flame will purify and enlighten us during Lent and enkindle the fire of the Holy Spirit in us during the fifty days of Easter. This week our first reading likens the salvation of the “District of the Gentiles” to light dispelling darkness, anguish, and gloom. Matthew’s Gospel characterizes Jesus as a light arising in “Galilee of the Gentiles,” beckoning the fishermen to join together in following him along the way. Paul exhorts us to remain united on the one way that follows the light of our one and only Lord, Jesus Christ.—Virginia StillwellCopyright © 2013, World Library Publications. All rights reserved.

SAINTS AND SPECIAL OBSERVANCESSunday: Third Sunday in Ordinary Time; Catholic Schools WeekMonday: St. Angela MericiTuesday: St. Thomas AquinasFriday: St. John Bosco; Chinese New Year 4712Saturday: Blessed Virgin Mary; First Saturday

DIVISION It is a situation that plays itself out in more and less significant ways: Christians divided. A CYO basketball game between two neighboring parishes. Parents of the young players scream insults and threats at one another and assert their “superiority.” A Protestant and a Catholic church sit on adjoining properties. Each is vigilant about having parking violators removed from its own “private” parking lot. An old pastor retires but continues to reside at the parish. A new pastor arrives and quickly finds his faith “community” choosing sides against him. Saint Paul addresses similar disagreements in the early church at Corinth. He encourages the church there to make up their differences and to be united again in their belief and practice. Today’s first reading from Isaiah speaks of a people weighed down by the yoke of sin and darkness. Certainly the bickering and differences among us can be classified as such. The Gospel tells of the beginning ministry of Jesus. The Light has come, encouraging us to “repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

PLEASE HELP THE HANDICAPPEDWe have many parishioners who are handicapped and it is very difficult for them to walk from the far parking lots to the church. Please do not park in the spaces next to the church on the east side in the spots that are designated for those with disabilities.

PRAYER FOR OUR NEW CHURCHOne thing we ask of you, Lord;

this we seek:To dwell in the house of the Lord

all the days of our lives,Bring us together in prayer,

participation and belief.May the building of our new church

finds its origin in youand through you reach completion.

Amen.

ST. VINCENT DE PAUL CONFERENCEOF SANTA CLARITA

“They” live in a trailer of approximately 300 square feet, no built in heat or air conditioning; electric service is by extension cord from a source outside and running water comes through an external garden hose. “They” pay $477 per month which includes electric service and water.

Their location is outside city limits at the fringe of our valley. “They” consist of father, mother and three minor children. The father was severely injured in a work related accident and will be unable to work again for some time. Because of their status, there is no worker’s compensation or disability. The children are US citizens and receive some support through the Department of Social Services. They are members of our Church and find ways to attend Sunday Mass whenever possible. This is one of the more extreme cases of families living in substandard conditions in our valley except for those living in tents. Poverty in our area is often not detectable. We find people living in poverty in all corners of Santa Clarita and surroundings. Many are working people who try their best to manage without outside help. Others who lost their jobs and have not found a new one or found one at significantly reduced income. And there are many with expired unemployment benefits and no other resources. Without help, many would end up among the homeless population. People feel for and are supportive of the homeless although we can hardly relate to them without personal experience. On the other hand, we don’t think about the importance of helping those still living under a roof but who need help. They are somewhat lost in the minds of our social services and charities as hardly any of them will help with rent assistance. St. Vincent de Paul focuses on these families who are in danger of eviction and homelessness. We visit every family who asks for assistance and investigate their situation and circumstances. We bring material help when necessary and spiritual guidance to those who have neglected their own religious beliefs. We do not proselytize but evangelize and help is not dependent on their religious beliefs.

“No act of charity is foreign to the Society”If you are able to help with a donation, please mail it to: Society

of St. Vincent de Paul,23936 Avenida Crescenta, Valencia, CA 91355.

All donations are tax-deductible. (#30-0543785)For pick-ups, please call 1-800-974-3571.
