Dear Parishioners, When we think of royalty, what may come to mind most quickly is the British royal family. There has been much coverage of that family through the years. Often we may have thoughts of a glamorous life of

ease and luxury. Over time, though, we have come to see them as a sometimes dysfunctional family that can be painfully, woefully human. This does not seem to be the kind of King we celebrate in Jesus. As we celebrate this Solemnity of Christ the King, it is apparent that we need a different image of kingship. We should look to the ancient image of a king to better understand what this solemnity says about Jesus, and what it entails for us as members of the kingdom of God. The ancient ideal of kingship meant that a king was one who was faced with mak-ing difficult decisions with wisdom, mercy and justice. Ancient kings were meant to live lives in service to their peo-ple, being willing to set a faith-filled and servant-like example. Kings were meant to serve as peacemakers, and were to be willing to give their lives in service to their people. They were called to live holy lives, and to lay down their lives for their people if necessary. This ancient image of the king helps us to better understand Jesus Christ, the King. He is the one who offers us an example of living to emulate in our daily lives. He is the one who seeks to bring peace into the midst of conflict. His wisdom, mer-cy and justice are a pattern for our own deliberations and actions. He is willing to offer us life by laying down his life

for us on the cross. As the best of Kings, Jesus teaches us by his example that true king-ship is not about glamour, power or wealth. It is about service. As our King, and as the example and model for our daily living, Jesus shows us by his life that we are called to humble, loving service. Our King shows us that we are to be merciful, just and truthful, willing to bring God’s peace to challenging situations. Like Christ, our King, we are called to lay down our lives so that others may live. This is the kind of kingship into which each of us has been bap-tized. This sort of kingship offers a vision of a new heaven and new earth. It also demonstrates that we, like Jesus, must be willing to stand in tatters before the powers of the world, ready to offer our lives in pursuit of the kingdom of God. Let us start pursuing that kingdom of God by becoming a good steward at St. Clare Parish.

Western liturgical calendar, having been ins tuted in 1925 by Pope Pius XI for the Roman Catholic Church. In 1970 its Roman Catholic observance was moved to the final Sunday of Ordinary Time. Therefore, the earliest date on which it can occur is 20 November and the latest is 26 November. Tradi onal Catholics observe it on its original date, the last Sunday of October. The Anglican, Lutheran, and many oth-er Protestant churches adopted it along with the Revised Common Lec onary, occasionally referring to it as Christ the King Sunday.

Padre Tadeo

Did You Know That Pope Pius XI instituted The Feast of Christ the King in 1925, to be celebrated throughout the universal church, in his encyclical Quas Primas. He hoped that with the celebration of the feast we - the faithful - would gain strength and courage, as we are reminded that Christ must reign in our hearts, minds, wills, and bodies (Quas Primas, 33). —www.churchyear.net

Please keep in your prayers our children and youth as they prepare to receive the Sacraments of First Reconciliation & First Communion and Confirma-tion.

CHRIST IS KING On the final Sunday of the liturgical year we celebrate the feast of Christ the King. It’s easy to under-stand today’s scriptures as events that happened long ago and far away, or predictions that will come true somewhere, some day. But they invite us to claim Christ as our King here and now. Jesus’ words to Pilate in the Gospel remind us that his kingdom transcends time and place. And the prophecies from Daniel and Revelation give us reason to be faithful to Christ our King right here and right now. By concluding the year with this feast we are proclaiming our faith that Jesus Christ is the one and only King over all seasons, all peoples, and all of crea-tion. No matter what nation we belong to or what lan-guage we speak, he “has made us into a king-dom” (Revelation 1:6)—one people united in love and peace for all eternity. Copyright © J. S. Fair Trade Sale, December 1-2

After all Masses on December 1-2, the Peace and Justice Committee (formerly the Social Justice Com-mittee) at St. Clare Parish will host a Fair Trade sale, where coffee and handcrafts from artisans around the world will be available for sale. Items for purchase in-clude jewelry, accessories, housewares, coffee choco-late, and Christmas items from SERRV International (http://www.serrv.org/), which partners with Catholic Relief Services Ethical Trade Program. This is a great time to do some Christmas shopping and support mar-ginalized artisans from more than 30 countries who are trying to make a better living for themselves, their fami-lies and their communities.

What is Fair Trade? Fair Trade builds right relationships between buy-ers and sellers that are rooted in the principles of hu-man dignity and solidarity. Fair trade also contributes to sustainable development by offering better trading con-ditions to and securing the rights of marginalized pro-ducers and workers. By participating in the Catholic Relief Services Fair Trade Program, we can bring core values of our faith to bear on the choices we make as consumers. Learn more about fair trade at http://www.crsfairtrade.org/. “There is no worse material poverty…than the poverty which prevents people from earning their bread and deprives them of the dignity of work.” – Pope Fran-cis
