CLERGY CORNERDear Parishioners:The half-way point of my sabbatical occurred at the end of the first week of September. Shortly thereafter I began what I consider the center piece of this time away from ministry, namely the 30 Day Retreat or Ignatian Exercises. It is not so much that I am in silence for more than four weeks – although I am – but rather it is having the blessing of days and days of solitude.Perhaps this little incident can illustrate the power of solitude. As I was on the shuttle from the Denver airport and headed to the Sacred Heart Jesuit Retreat Center in Sedalia, someone named Alice spoke incessantly from the front passenger seat. At one point the driver, who was obviously familiar with this route and with Alice, leaned his head toward her and placed his right hand on her arm whispering loud enough for all of us to hear, “Do you want to know where these people are headed? They’re going on a silent retreat!” The giggles were a bit muffled throughout the van, but nothing would deter Alice. As the conversation continued, I learned that the stranger next to me was Sr. Sharon from Austin, Texas. At some point, perhaps trying to explain a silent retreat to Alice, the sister expounded, “Someone once said, ‘In solitude all things find their proper emphasis.’ ” I’m not sure that such a thought was my intention going into the retreat, but if it proves to be one of the outcomes, then I’ll gladly welcome it.All this solitude allows my pastoral love for you to swell. I didn’t think that I would miss you so much. I regret not being present at typical OLPH events (worshipping with you and greeting you on Sundays, officiating at weddings and quinceñeras, welcoming our new music and liturgy director, and opening the new school year) as well as at the special parish gatherings (the 69th annual Barbecue, the Parish Night at Dodger Stadium, and the evening of laughter called A Comedy Writer Finds God.) One thing that I don’t miss: the excessive heat of Santa Clarita. But I hear that it has been a relatively mild summer and September so far.So pray for me in my solitude and in my prayer. I know that you haven’t been too worried about me in the midst of the Colorado floods since you’ve seen me walk on water. Seriously, it rained the day that I arrived – September 10 -- and didn’t stop for a week, but the much publicized flooding is not near here. In fact, at the retreat center it was mostly a pleasant sounding, gentle rain. You are in my prayers and in my thoughts. (Some of those thoughts, by the way, are being engendered by a book titled Rebuilt by Michael White and Tom Corcoran.)I’m grateful to Fr. Albert for filling in during my absence. His presence affords me the opportunity to enjoy this four-month break from ministry.Miss you,Fr. Dick Martini

THE YEAR OF FAITH

What were some of the biggest changes that the Second Vatican Council brought about?

That’s a big question!

The Second Vatican Council (a.k.a., Vatican II) was called by Pope John XXIII, and continued with Pope Paul VI, to reinvigorate the life of the Church. The spirit of “aggiornamento,” or a bringing up to date, was part of the whole Council. This does not mean that the theology of the Church was outdated. Rather, it called for opening wide the windows and bringing in some fresh air into the life of the Church. It called for further development of ecclesiology (theology about the Church) both within itself and with other Christian traditions (ecumenism) and non-Christian religions (interreligious dialogue). It called for a return to the sources when investigating the reason practices were done. It called for a deeper connection with and appreciation for the Mass. It called for a deeper knowledge and love of Scripture. It encouraged the laity to accept their role as missionaries and evangelizers. It called for, what has recently been known as, a New Evangelization, to proclaim the Gospel in new ways to a new generation of people. It called for many things, but one of the major things it did was to bring the Church back into a dialogue with the modern world.

Scripture shows us that we are to live in the world, but to not be of the world. That means that we must live in the world but not be so attached to it that we forsake our relationship with God. It also means that we must be able to help the people in the world to come to know the love of God for them and how He calls them into a relationship with Himself. This means that we must be able to engage the world in dialogue through various means. This means that we must also know our faith, the reason behind our practices and beliefs, and most importantly have a relationship with God.

So what were some of the biggest changes that Vatican II brought about? That answer lies in how we engage our faith and how our faith causes us to engage the world.

If you have any questions that you would like answered, please e-mail me at [email protected]. I will continue to take questions and answer them through the remainder of this month.

SCHOOL STUDENTNON-DISCRIMINATION POLICY

The school, mindful of its mission to be a witness to the love of Christ for all, admits students regardless of race, color or national and/or ethnic origin to all rights, privileges, programs and activities generally accorded or made available to students at the school.

The school does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, disability, sex or national and/or ethnic origin in the administration of educational policies, admissions policies, scholarship and loan programs, and athletic and other school-administered programs; although certain athletic leagues and other programs may limit participation and some archdiocesan schools operate as single sex schools.

While the school does not discriminate against students with special needs, a full range of services may not always be available to them. Decisions concerning the admission and continued enrollment of a student in the school are based upon the student’s emotional, academic and physical abilities and the resources available to the school in meeting the student’s needs.
