FAZtor ’s Notes By Fr. Arnold Zamora You may have noticed that our White Zone in front of the 39th Avenue church entrance has been moved a few parking spaces south. This was done

upon our request, so when we have a Funeral Mass the hearse can park with tailgate access at the small ramp, to make it easier for a casket to be taken in and out of the church. We ask you to please abide by the zone restrictions – Passenger Zone, No Parking during posted Services, etc. The white zone also allows adequate space for any emergency vehicles, should they be required during our services. Next week, on Wednesday, November 18, we will have a special Mass and breakfast in honor of our Holy Name Knights, many of whom have passed on. They are remembered annually in the month of November, since many of the original members were WWII and Korean Conflict veterans. In this past year we have lost three Knights - Dan McCarthy, Stephen Franks and most recently Rene Rodigou, a member of the US Marine Corps. A Funeral Mass was held this past week for Frank McIntosh, longtime parishioner and for-mer member of the Army Air Corps. As you know, many of the houses in the Sunset were built just before and after WWII, so many of the veterans who were getting married and starting their families pur-chased homes in our Parish. We remember them all, living and de-ceased with honor and respect this Veterans Day. One Sunday morning, the pastor noticed little Alex staring up at the large plaque that hung in the foyer of the church. The plaque was covered with names, and small American flags were mounted on either side of it. The seven year-old had been staring at the plaque for some time, so the pastor walked up, stood beside him and said quiet-ly, “Good morning, Alex.” Good morning, Father,” replied the young man, still focused on the plaque. “Father McGhee, what is this?” Alex asked. “Well, son, it’s a memorial to all the men and women who have died in the service.” Soberly, they stood together, staring at the large plaque. Little Alex’s voice was barely audible when he finally managed to ask, “Which one, the 9:00 or 10:30 service?” Indeed, November is a month when we remember and hon-or all of our loved ones who have gone before us. We will also re-member in a special way our parishioners who passed away from November of 2014 through October of this year with a Memorial Mass next Saturday, November 14th at 10:30 AM. If you are family mem-bers or friends of these deceased please join us. You can also share a picture of your deceased loved ones. Just give those treasured pic-tures ahead of time or before Saturday. “Death is not the greatest loss in life. The greatest loss is what dies inside us while we live.” (Norman Cousins)

Notes:

Collections and Expenses for the quarter were approximately equal to prior years. Estate donations were the main contributor to income this year. Our investment portfolio, administered by the Archdiocese, decreased for the quarter, as it closely parallels the stock market. Many of these losses will be recovered in October as the market increased. The preschool is not reported this quarter. Thank you for your continued support.

HOLY NAME SCHOOL NEWSLETTER November 3, 2015 When we rise up each morning, let us think of what a precious privilege it is to be alive- to breathe, to think, to enjoy, to be happy loving one another. May we begin everyday with a smile, calmness of mind, coolness of emotion, and a heart filled with love. God's blessings be upon you! -Fr Arnold

PRINCIPAL'S LETTER Dear Holy Name Families, We hope you all had a fun and safe Halloween weekend. We enjoyed seeing all the students in their Halloween costumes- thank you to those of you who volunteered to make goodies for the classroom parties. Sincerely, Natalie Cirigliano, Principal

Preschool-The Red Fish students made leaf rubbings with leaves that Abigail's grandmother sent from Connecticut! They also baked two loaves of pumpkin bread to share with the preschool. The Blue Fish students learned about our patron saint, St. Francis and everyone joined the "big school" for the Blessing of the Animals. The students enjoyed meeting Argos, the police dog that Officer Andrew (Athan's Dad) brought into the school. Officer Andrew informed the students about the job of a police dog and how they help police officers. Every-one enjoyed our Halloween parade, our school performance and snack parties!

Kindergarten- Last week for math, Kindergarten weighed the class pumpkin which weighed13 pounds. They also measured the circumfer-ence of the pumpkin which was 55 cm. They then scooped out all the seeds in the pumpkin. They counted the seeds and then made roasted pumpkin seeds. During the science station last week, students com-pared and contrasted bats to birds. As a social studies lesson, stu-dents were introduced to Dia de los Muertos in order to learn about a different culture and their customs. They then followed up the lesson with an art project and had to color their own calaveras.

1st Grade- Last week our first graders had fun making Halloween cards for their 8th grade buddies. They had math centers where they studied greater than, less than, and Frankenstein Fact Families. In religion class the students learned about St. Patrick, and enjoyed shar-ing what they learned with the rest of school during mass. In phonics class, the students learned how to add an s to some words to make plurals. They also studied the short e sound.

2nd Grade- Last week the 2nd graders wrote five things they are all thankful for in Religion. In math, the children began regrouping 10 ones as one 10. During science the children made mobiles, and they were able to get the mobiles to balance using counterweights. For Animal Blessing, Mrs. Aymard brought her dog Oliver, and each 2nd grader took a picture with Oliver and wrote stories about him. On Fri-day, the children wore their Halloween costumes to school. They en-joyed a wonderful catwalk and class party.

3rd Grade- 3rd grade was busy last week with Halloween pumpkins and poems and learning about All Saints' Day. They chose to study St. Bernadette Soubirous who is the patron saint of the sick and of

Lourdes in France. For math, third grade started understanding the started understanding the concept of multiplication and how it relates to addition. They used arrays to help them multiply and they also used it for grid mapping in social studies. For reading third grade read a non-fiction article about tornadoes and the impact they have on earth.

4th Grade- In 4th grade, students learned about the Ten Command-ments during religion class, and they thought of ways to reword each one so that they could emphasize what each commandment really means. In history, the 4th graders created their own personal timelines of their lives thus far and made mini posters detailing the different structures of a typical presidio. In art with Mrs. K, they painted beauti-ful Spanish galleons (ships carrying gold) with water colors.

5th Grade- Last week the 5th grade learned about the sacrament of Confirmation in Religion class, and enjoyed the festivities of both Blessing of the Animals and Halloween. Students finished their lesson on mixtures and solutions in science and began a new unit on weath-er. In social studies the students began studying the New England colonies. In computer class fifth grade used citation machine.net to to create book and web site citations for their bibliography project.

6th Grade- Last week in English class, the sixth graders discussed compound subjects, compound predicates, and how to find the subject in an interrogative sentence. To find the subject in interrogative sen-tences, they wrote out the sentence, cut it into pieces, and rearranged the pieces into declarative sentences. In literature class the students read a very unusual story titled "User Friendly" about a boy and his best friend, his computer. This science fiction story allowed students to discuss the idea of conflict in literature. 6th Grade worked on multiply-ing and dividing decimals in math class last week after they had just finished adding and subtracting decimals. They are learning to apply this to every day things such as finding the tax and tip of a bill or re-ceipt. In 6th grade religion students created small art books using the symbols from the story of Noah's Ark.

7th Grade- In English class the seventh graders began a unit on me-chanics and punctuation. They created charts with different proper nouns and adjectives. In math class 7thgrade finished adding and subtracting rational numbers and began multiplying and dividing them. They will be starting to keep a checkbook in math class where they will learn to balance a check book as they get "paid" for being on time to class and have to pay for various things. In religion class the students learned about different types of Prayer. Last week they also learned how Halloween became a Christian feast.

8th Grade- In English class the 8th graders learned about and sang the Helping Verbssong to the tune of "Jingle Bells". In literature the students read "The Hitchhiker",a radio drama from the 1940's which provided an opportunity to listen to a piece written specifically for radio (quite a concept for today's students). This story helped students to see how sound can have a great impact on building suspense. In math the 8th grade finished solving equations with variables on both sides of the equal sign and multi-step equations. They began working on solving multi-step inequalities and graphing them.
