It is a dis�nctly American phenomenon of extreme rates of incarcera�on, concentrated in poor communi�es of color. * Mass incarcera�on exists in an environment that does not need external ac�on, and it is capable of self-correc�on to preserve itself. * Children whose parents have been or are incarcerated are more likely to experience poorer health and educa�on outcomes. * The U.S. has the highest incarcera�on rate of any country in the world, and its incarcera�on rate has more than quadrupled since 1970.
