Welcome to the 2014 Mass Customized Learning Summit!

As chairs of the Maine Cohort for Customized Learning, we thank you for attending the second annual MCL Summit here in Portland, Maine. Along with our partners in South Dakota and Pennsylvania, we are proud to be your hosts.

A special thank you to visionaries Chuck Schwahn and Bea McGarvey, authors of “Inevitable: Mass Customized Learning” & “Inevitable Too! The Total Leader Embraces Mass Customized Learning,” for leading the vision for Mass Customized Learning, a vision for:

“the implementation of a school structure that makes it possible to simultaneously meet the individual and personal needs of learners every hour of every day.

Every learner, every day, comes to school and is met at his/her specific learning level, is challenged, is successful, and looks forward to returning to school tomorrow.”

As with the 1st Annual MCL Summit, the agenda for this 2nd Annual MCL Summit is structured to encourage dialogue. Therefore our sessions are tightly scheduled and designed to engage you in conversation during and between sessions. You will have opportunities to continue your conversations with like-minded educators from twelve states in the “Hot Topic” and “Reflection Café.” Breaks, lunches, and of course our Lobster/Chicken bake on Tuesday night are other opportunities for networking and conversations. And keep connected with our twitter Hashtag #mclsummit14.

Summit materials are found at: http://tinyurl.com/mclsummit2014. Look for the QR codes at the back of this program to easily access this website.

We realize building and implemnenting a Mass Customized Learning community is hard work. We hope you have come to the Summit to relax and enjoy networking with colleagues about transforming education into mass customized learning opportunities. We also hope you enjoy Maine.

General Session: Chuck Schwahn and Bea McGarvey 9:00 – 10:00 Vermont/Hew Hampshire Rooms

What We’ve Learned? Where From Here?

The MCL Vision is compelling, needed, doable . . . AND not easy to pull off! As Chuck and Bea have worked with schools and districts three things have become clear.  Join them as they share:  a deal breaker, a lesson, and an insight.

Chuck Schwahn has made his professional life a study of leadership and effective organizations. For the past thirty years he has worked with businesses and school systems throughout North America providing consultation and training on the topics of leadership, change, customizing learning, and future-focused strategic design. Chuck is the co-author of Total Leaders, a bestseller book published AASA, Inevitable: Mass Customized Learning & Inevitable Too! Chuck received his doctorate from the University of Massachusetts where Ken Blanchard of The One Minute Manager fame, was his doctoral chair.

Bea McGarvey has consulted with educators throughout the United States and Canada in the areas of teaching and learning, leadership and transforming education. Her knowledge and experience is a result of the thirty year career she enjoyed in Maine Schools as a classroom teacher, middle school counselor and administrator, and as a district and state leader. As a Partner in Total Leaders Associates, Bea proudly and passionately consults with schools and district in transforming schools to realize a new vision for education. She is co-author of Inevitable: Mass Customized Learning, Inevitable Too! The Total Leader Embraces Mass Customized Learning: The Future is Now: Shifts and Trends That Are Redefining Organizations, Careers, and Life, MCL Strength Finder, and Total Leaders: A Leadership Curriculum used by the Pennsylvania Leadership Development Consortium.

Digital Literacy Skills Critical for Independent Learning

MCL Focus: Learner Focused Intrinsic Motivators √ Replacing Industrial Age Practices √ Technology for Learning √ Technology as Enabler

Presenter: Lennie Symes, Learning Specialist

Demographics: Technology and Innovation in Education (TIE) http://tie.net

Description of the Session: As education evolves toward customized learning, digital literacy skills become absolutely critical--unfortunately, most students and educators “don’t know what they don’t know.” Even the best problem solving skills can be hampered without a deep understanding of the processes for digging past surface level information often found on the web. Examine the importance of students acquiring vital digital literacy skills for better problem solving as well as implications for using these tools in a customized environment.

Empowerment Session 210:15 – 11:00 Connecticut/Rhode Island Rooms

May the Force Be With You: Planning for the Unique Needs of Young Adolescents

MCL Focus: √ Learner Focused Intrinsic Motivators √ Replacing Industrial Age Practices √ Technology for Learning Technology as Enabler

Presenters: Lindsay Mahoney, Middle School Math and Science Teacher, RSU 18: Messalonskee Middle School, Oakland, Maine Hope Herrick, Middle School Math and Science Teacher, RSU 18: Messalonskee Middle School, Oakland, Maine

Demographics: Messalonskee Middle School is a rural middle school that serves learners in grades 6-8 from Belgrade, Sidney, Oakland and Rome. There are seven teams in the building and approximately 530 learners. Twenty is the average class size, however we group and regroup learners based on their needs so the group sizes fluctuate.

Description of the Session: As middle school educators, we realize that learning is a social process and that motivation and engagement increases when learners are interested in the content and tasks. Planning in the three circles of content knowledge, complex reasoning and habits of mind as well as integrating several content areas and learning styles provides the opportunity for learners to interact with each other, their environment and the content.

Pivotal Moments from the Master Scheduler: A Counselor’s Perspective

MCL Focus: √ Learner Focused √ Intrinsic Motivators √ Replacing Industrial Age Practices Technology for Learning Technology as Enabler

Presenter: Abbie Forbus High School Counselor, Lindsay High School, Lindsay, CA

Demographics: Lindsay Unified School District (LUSD), located in the San Joaquin Valley of California, serves 4,074 K-12th grade learners in six elementary schools (K-8), one comprehensive high school, and three alternative education schools. Seventy eight percent (78%) of our learners are from low-income families; all (100%) of our learners qualify for free or reduced price meals (FRPM). Ninety percent (90%) are Hispanic. Fifty-two percent (52%) are English learners (EL), most entering Lindsay schools at the lowest levels of English proficiency. The Lindsay community is characterized by a significant population of immigrant families, a high percentage of families living below the federal poverty level, low levels of literacy in English, and low levels of parent education. Thirty-eight percent (38%) of the population has a high school diploma and just 5% have a Bachelor’s degree or higher compared to the national average of 80.4% and 24% respectively. Many Lindsay children face barriers of poverty, lack of English language skills, and other associated risk factors that impact their academic achievement and, ultimately, future economic prospects. Like many schools with similar populations throughout the state and the nation, LUSD schools had experienced long, documented histories of poor performance and failed efforts to improve. A small portion of our learners did well, but significant numbers failed to graduate, and the majority of those that did graduate were inadequately prepared for college or the workplace. Clearly, the traditional educational system was failing our learners. In order to meet the challenges of poor achievement results and unprepared learners, systemic change was needed.

Demographics (continued): The district, in collaboration with all stakeholders in the school and community, took a bold step in declaring a full district-wide redesign, restructuring our schools from 3 K-6 schools to a K-8 model with 6 elementary schools and one high school (August 2011) and replacing the traditional, time-based system with a Performance-Based System (PBS) - a learner-centered educational approach which leads to each learner mastering content in a personalized mastery learning environment.

LUSD began building the foundation for transition to a PBS in 2007. Staff, learners, parents, and the community came together to create a shared vision of learning and to develop the foundation to support the new vision. The result of this work is the District’s Strategic Design, which establishes a clear mission for the district, defines the core values, the guiding principles to be used when making decisions, the vision for the future, and the Life Long Learning Standards to be developed in each of our learners. Adopted by the LUSD Board of Trustees in 2007, the Strategic Design provides a clear roadmap for teaching and learning in LUSD schools. LUSD’s mission, Empowering and Motivating for Today and Tomorrow, supports a deep commitment to children – that every child will learn, that every child can meet high standards, and that every child can succeed in life.

Description of the Session: In the performance-based system, counselors empower those around them to find the best solution for each learner and to answer the hard questions: What kind of setting does this learner need? What kind of course structure would help facilitate success? Learn how the high school counselor helps learners discover their academic pace and help learning facilitators redesign the educational setting in a system that is meant to create critical pathways to success.

Empowerment Session 61:15 – 2:00 Massachusetts Room

Mission Possible: Customized Learning for the Masses

Presenter: Scott Bacon: 3shapes, Educate/Empower: OH

Description of the Session: Generally if you ask a large group of teachers , “Should we teach students at the point of their need?”, you will get a lot of head nodding. The logic of the ideology is solid. Often, however, the real challenge is making the idealistic become realistic. Differentiating for a large spectrum of needs can be burdensome. In this session we will investigate how technology can help carry the load. We will look at grouping and regrouping and how to streamline work so we are working smarter and not just harder.

General Session: Jim Moulton - Apple, Inc. 9:00 – 10:00 Vermont/Hew Hampshire Rooms

Purposeful 1:1 - Technology in Support of Customized Learning

In this session Jim will describe ways in which Apple tools can be used to tailor the educational experience for diverse members of a school community. By empowering students to engage with content in ways that work for them, as well as to demonstrate mastery in ways that are most effective, Apple can be a powerful partner in a customized learning environment.

Jim Moulton is a K-12 Education Development Executive on Apple’s Eastern Education Sales and Marketing Team. He is based in Maine. Prior to joining Apple as a Professional Development Specialist on the Maine Learning Technology Initiative team, Jim spent nine years as an independent educational technology & project-based learning consultant, focused on preparing the learners of today to be the leaders of tomorrow. Jim was one of the original contributors to the Spiral Notebook blog on the George Lucas Educational Foundation’s Edutopia.org web site, was a blogger for the KnowledgeWorks Foundation on their Future of Education blog, and served as a member of the Buck Institute for Education’s National Faculty. In ongoing work he collaborated with others in his home state of Maine in designing, developing, and delivering professional development that supported that state’s groundbreaking 1:1 laptop program, the Maine Learning Technology Initiative (www.mlti.org). He has worked with schools in Europe and Asia as well as across North America. Jim is a knowledgeable and humane technology advocate. He helps schools first understand and then act on the fact that the “human networks” over which the digital ones are layered, need just as much attention as the hardware when improvement in overall student achievement and results across the school community are the goals.

MCL Focus: Learner Focused Intrinsic Motivators √ Replacing Industrial Age Practices Technology for Learning Technology as Enabler

Presenters: Dr. Patrick E. Crawford, PLDC Executive Director, PA Dr. Jay Scott, PLDC Board Member, PA

Demographics: The Pennsylvania Leadership Development Center (PLDC) was established in 1995 to develop and promote leadership learning. In 2008 PLDC incorporated into an independent non-profit 501c3 organization. The PLDC mission is to create leader-learning opportunity that transforms lives, organizations and communities. PLDC supports schools, districts, intermediate units and consortiums in the movement to transform education through mass customized learning.

Description of the Session: There are three critical components to transforming education: people, language and systems. A Total Leader of MCL will ask the following question: “I envision a learning environment that adds value to everyone’s life – everyday! I wonder if anything we are doing gets us closer to that vision? What am I missing?”How do you know what you are doing is actually working? The session is devoted todiscovering the concept of “Congruency!”

Mission Possible: Customized Learning for the Masses

Presenter: Scott Bacon: 3shapes, Educate/Empower: OH

Description of the Session: Generally if you ask a large group of teachers , ‘Should we teach students at the point of their need?’, you will get a lot of head nodding.
