June 28, 2020 13th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Dear Parish Family,

Our readings for this Sunday speak of hospitality, of being welcoming to others. Particularly as baptized believers living for God in Christ Jesus, we are to be open to all whom we meet and accept them in the love of Christ. In the first reading from the book of Kings, a woman and her husband welcomed the prophet Elisha to their home and invited him to dine with them. Later, when he would pass their way, he would stop by and visit them. Eventually, the couple set up a room for him to stay in and rest. They not only honored the prophet by their hospitality, they also helped him in his mission by providing him with a place to stay. As the reading ends, Elisha promises a special blessing from God for their gracious generosity. As Jesus says in the gospel, “Whoever receives a prophet because he is a prophet will receive a prophet’s reward.” God’s favor always repays our goodness with even greater abundance. We can never out give God. Just try it and see how surprised you will be!

Of course, essential to hospitality is a fundamental attitude of care and concern for others. As we continue to journey through the pandemic crisis, we must have that same attitude, especially if we claim to be followers of Christ. There still are so many unknowns about the coronavirus. However, one thing for sure is that there has been a surge in cases through-out the country, and particularly in the Austin area. Because of this, during Mass, we are maintaining the requirements of social distancing, using hand sanitizer, and wearing masks. Are the masks really necessary? Honestly, beats me. But, it can’t hurt. At the very least, it is an effort to sustain the possibility of any kind of transmission from occurring. Any inconvenience in wearing them certainly is minimal.

Recently, the following post appeared on Facebook. I believe it’s worth sharing.

I wear my mask while in public for 3 reasons:

1. Humility: I don’t know if I have COVID as it is clear that people can spread the disease before they have symptoms.

2. Kindness: I don’t know if the person I am near has a kid battling cancer, or cares for their elderly mom. While I might be fine, they might not.

3. Community: I want my community to thrive, businesses to stay open, employees to stay healthy. Keeping a lid on COVID helps us all!

Finally, as we celebrate our country’s independence this Saturday, let us ask God’s continued blessings on our nation, founded on the principles of equality and justice for all. Especially during this time of racial tension and discord, may our prayer be mindful of the needs of those in our nation who are most vulnerable, in particular, the poor and the homeless. Let us also be mindful of all the men and women who give (and have given) so generously of themselves in military service.

The following is a prayer for our country from Catholic Online. I encourage you to pray it as a family as you begin your own celebration on Saturday.

God our Father, Giver of life, we entrust the United States of America to Your loving care. You are the rock on which this nation was founded. You alone are the true source of our cherished rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Reclaim this land for Your glory and dwell among Your people. Send Your Spirit to touch the hearts of our nation´s leaders. Open their minds to the great worth of human life and the responsibilities that accompany human freedom. Remind Your people that true happiness is rooted in seeking and doing Your will. Through the intercession of Mary Immaculate, Patroness of our land, grant us the courage to reject the "culture of death." Lead us into a future of life. We ask this through Christ Our Lord. Amen.

May God bless all of you, always, and in all ways, and may God bless America! Father Ed

The Visit People in need of assistance who live within the St. Vincent de Paul parish boundary are eligible to receive a visit from two Vincentian (members of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul) caseworkers. At the visits, caseworkers listen with compassion and mercy to the situation presented by our neighbors. The caseworkers share a list of community resources including food pantries and other agencies that can help

address their needs. After the visit, the Vincentian caseworkers consider the financial request for rent, utilities or other items and determine the best way to financially assist this neighbor. The assistance is based on their individual need and the Society’s availability of funds. Our visits always end with a prayer that is sometimes led by our neighbor. For more information about the Society of St. Vincent de Paul at our parish, please contact Janie Alonzo at 979-777-3737 or [email protected].

Have you been thinking about becoming a

Roman Catholic? Perhaps you have been attending Mass with your family or friends and just never “got around to it”. Maybe you aren’t quite sure if you are ready to take this step and want to know more about the Catholic faith before making a commitment. You might have been raised as a Catholic but never had all of your Sacraments of Initiation — Baptism, Eucharist, and Confirmation. Then you may be ready for the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA). If you have children over the age of 7 who have not received their sacraments, we have an RCIA process adapted for children, too! Anyone interested in learning about the Catholic faith or inquiring about initiation in the Church is invited to call the Parish

Congratulations to the first group of students who received the

Sacrament of First Communion last weekend!
