Masque of the red death1 – On your blank sheet of paper, write down all the symbols you

can find in the Masque of the Red Death and briefly explain their importance.

the clock – symbolized time and when it stopped, time was over for the revelers. It was also black which can represent evil and death.

2 – Go back to the story and find words that are context clues to the tone of the story Choose 7-10 from the story that relate to the tone and create mood.

3 – Last, look for some quotes that really capture the tone and mood of the story. You do not have to use the entire sentence, but find some sentences or phrases that really stand out. Make sure you note what page the are found on.

2 – Choose five keys words from the story that relate to the tone and mood. Place them on or around your illustration on the front of your paper. Key words are words that actually appear in the text that you think have power and meaning and relate to the author’s tone and mood.

3 – Choose two quotations from the story. This can be any phrase, sentence or paragraph that you think is important in the story. It should also be related to the tone and mood of the story. Make sure that you place the quotations around these passages and use MLA documentation.

quotations. How do these help your illustration express the symbolism, tone, mood of the story? ON THE BACK OF YOUR ONE-PAGER, write a paragraph . This paragraph should be at least 6 to 8 good sentences. Do not give a plot summary of the story.

Directions for One Pager  In “The Masque of the Red Death” by Edgar Allen

Poe, the harp is very symbolic. It is described as “an instrument that bellowed a death knell to the entire soiree” (Poe 396). Words like death and bellowed signify the very ominous mood Poe sets with his horrifying tone. The harp itself seemed to be a tool of the Red Death, reminding Prince Prospero’s guests that death is inevitable. The harp is also describes as “crimson in color” (Poe 398). Red is a highly symbolic color, representing blood and anger. Poe’s color choice further develops the tone and mood by continuing to be tied back to death and violence.
