Grand Master’s MessageMy brothers all,

I hope you are enjoying your summer and are busy visiting lodges and your brother Masons. We are now preparing to hold another Grand Lodge Com-munication in October, 2019. This meeting is to do the business of the Grand Lodge of Kentucky, to install a new Grand Master and to see old friends and brothers from across the state. In preparation for this event, I encourage you to look at this copy of the Masonic Home Journal for details about the Grand Communication. I also strongly encourage you to discuss in your lodges the legislation to be brought before the Grand Lodge. Your lodge secretaries have a copy of this legislation. Many important items and issues are addressed and I encourage you to understand them thoroughly before the meeting. Ours is an organization governed by a written constitution and issues that impact it, and the body of the craft, need to be discussed before any legislation is enacted.

I, and the other Grand Lodge Officers, thank you for a wonderful year and ask you to continue to work diligently in your lodges and community to let our Masonic light shine.

Do good unto all,

Fraternally Thine,

Gary C. RoseGrand Master of Masons, Grand Lodge of Kentucky F.& A.M.

ITEMS LAID OVER FROM THE 219TH ANNUALCOMMUNICATION OF THE GRAND LODGE OF KENTUCKY, FREE AND ACCEPTED MASONS

ITEM NO. 1

To Amend Article 1, Section 1(Currently Reads)

ARTICLE 1-DECLARATION (Declaration)SECTION 1.The Grand Lodge of Kentucky, Free and Accepted Masons, acknowl-edges a belief in God to be the great fundamental principle and Land-mark of Freemasonry upon which our fraternity is erected. Without an avowal of such belief no man shall be initiated in a lodge of Free and Accepted Masons, and if a Freemason shall renounce or forsake his belief in God, or if he does not continue to entertain such belief, he shall not remain a member of any lodge and shall be expelled.

(Proposed to Read)

ARTICLE 1- DECLARATION AND LANDMARKSSECTION 1.The Grand Lodge of Kentucky, Free and Accepted Masons, acknowl-edges a belief in God to be the great fundamental principle and Land-mark of Freemasonry upon which our fraternity is erected. Without an avowal of such belief no man shall be initiated in a lodge of Free and Accepted Masons, and if a Freemason shall renounce or forsake his belief in God, or if he does not continue to entertain such belief, he shall not remain a member of any lodge and shall be expelled. The Grand Lodge of Kentucky, Free and Accepted Masons has adopt-ed the following as fundamental Landmarks of the Order: 1. The Belief in a Supreme Being (A belief in the existence of God as Grand Architect of the Universe is one of the most important Landmarks of the Order. It has been always deemed essential that the denial of the existence of a Supreme and Superintending Power, is an absolute disqualification for initiation. The annals of The Grand Lodge of Kentucky F. & A. M. never yet have furnished or could fur-nish an instance in which an avowed atheist was ever made a Mason. The very initiatory ceremonies of the first degree forbid and prevent the possibility of so monstrous of an occurrence.) 2. The Belief of Immortality of the Soul (The Immortality of the Soul, Freemasonry offers no argument. It states the principle as an unquestioned integral part of the Institution. The hope that life does not end with the physical body, but continues through a boundless future, has through past ages been an inspiration to brightness of life, patience, perseverance and process. As a life force it has throbbed through the inertia of savage existence and quickened man to those extraordinary efforts that produced civilization. A shining pillar of cloud by day, of fire by night, the beacon of humanity isImmortality.) 3. The Volume of Sacred Law (The “Book of Law” shall constitute an indispensable part of the furniture of every Lodge. I advisedly say, a Book of Law, because it is not absolutely required that everywhere the Old and New Testaments shall be used. The “Book of Law” is that volume which, by the religion of the initiate, is believed to contain the revealed will of the Grand Architect of the Universe. Masonry does not attempt to interfere with the religions of its disciples, except so far as relates to the belief in the existence of a Grand Architect of the Universe, and what results from that belief. The “Book of law” is to the Speculative Mason his spiritual Trestle-Board, without this he cannot labor; whatever he believes to be the revealed will of the Grand Architect of the Universe constitutes for him this spiritual Trestle-Board, without this he cannot labor; whatever he believes to be the revealed will of the Grand Architect of the Universe constitutes for him this spiritual Trestle-Board and must ever be before him in his hours of Speculative labor, to be the rule and guide of his conduct. The “Book of Law,” a religious code of some kind, purporting to be an exemplar of the revealed will of God, shall form in essential part of the furniture of every Lodge under the auspices of The Grand Lodge of Kentucky F. & A. M.) 4. The Legend of the Third Degree (The Legend of the Third De-gree is an important Landmark, the integrity of which has been well preserved. There is no rite of Masonry, practiced in any country or language, in which the essential elements of this “legend” are not taught. The lectures may vary and indeed are constantly changing, but the “legend” has ever remained substantially the same; and it is necessary that it should be so, for the Legend of the Temple Builder constitutes the very essence and identity of Masonry.) 5. Secrecy of the Institution (Which includes: The necessary words, signs, and tokens, whereby one Mason may know another to be such, in darkness as in light; that every regular Lodge must be Tyled while at labor; that every visitor seeking admission to the Lodge must be examined and prove himself a Mason, unless duly and properly avouched for; those other matters which cannot be written in any language.) 6. Symbolism of the Operative Arts (THE FOUNDATION OF A SPECULATIVE SCIENCE UPON AN OPERATIVE ART, and the symbolic use and explanation of the terms of that art, for purposes of religious or moral teaching. The Temple of Solomon was the cra-dle of the Institution, and, therefore, the reference to the operative Masonry, which constructed that magnificent edifice to the materi-als and implements which were employed in its construction, and to the artists who were engaged in the building, are all component and essential parts of the body of Freemasonry, which could not be sub-tracted from it without an entire destruction of the whole identity of

the Order. Hence, all the comparatively modern rites of Freemasonry, however they may differ in other respects, religiously preserve this temple history and these operative elements, as the substratum of all their modifications of the Masonic system.) 7. A Man must be of Lawful Age (Every initiate that comes to the door of any Lodge under the auspices of The Grand lodge of Ken-tucky F.&A.M., must be of lawful age (eighteen years of age) and coming to said Lodge under the “tongue of good report,” meaning well recommended.)

If not sustained the lodge shall proceed with the advance-ment of the candidate.(17) Any objection to advancement may be withdrawn by the objector in open lodge, or to the Master privately and the withdrawal must be noted in the minutes at a stated communication and the candidate may then be advanced.(18) (G) Unless charges are preferred, no objection shall prevent an Entered Apprentice or Fellow Craft Mason from participating fully in any degree which he has attained or having a demit issued to him as provided in ARTICLE 18, (SECTION- 3).

“I Didn’t Know That……” The earliest record of Masonic‘ritual” is an obligation found in Eng-land’s Regius Manuscript (circa 1390) following the Charges, which states: “And all the points hereinbefore To all of them he must be sworn, And all shall swear the same oath Of the masons, be they will-ing, be they loth”. Let us now look briefly at the ‘two grade’ system used in Scotland and brought to England.

The Edinburgh Register House Manuscript, dated 1696, titled “THE FORME OF GIVING THE MASON WORD” and supported by three similar documents (one discovered a few years back), as well as a minute book containing a portion of the ceremony, all nearly word for word, and all from the Southern part of Scotland; are strong evidence that these ceremonies were used for operative masons, previous to the formation of the Grand Lodge of London. It should be remembered

Ancient & Accepted Scottish Rite - Orient of Kentucky

that the original English Manuscript Constitutions were used for Fellows, as the apprentices were no more than indentured servants who could be bought and sold, but as times changed, the apprentice was “entered” on the rolls and began to gain his status.

These documents state that the apprentice while on his knees and “after a great many ceremonies to frighten him”, he took up the book (Bible) and repeated the following: “By god himself and you shall answer to god when you stand nakd before him, , at the great day, you shall not reveal any pairt of what you shall hear or see at this time whither by word nor write nor put it in wryte at any time nor draw it with the point of a sword, or any other instrument upon the snow or sand, nor shall you speak of it but with an entered mason, so help you god”. (a simple obligation of secrecy). The candidate was then removed outside the door by the ‘youngest mason’ and taught the sign, postures, and words of entry and on his return, he took off his hat and made ‘a ridiculas bow’ gave the sign, word (actually both pillar words) and then he greeted the master and brethren, gave the sign again along with a spoken penalty. The ‘youngest mason’ then passed the word to his neighbor, and around the room to the Master, who in turn whispered it to the candidate.

This is the end of the ceremony, and is followed by 15 questions and answers. A partial list includes: “Are you a Mason? How shall I know it? Where were you entered? What makes a true and perfect lodge? Where was the first lodge? Are there any lights in your lodge? Are there any jewels in your lodge? These questions on this evening of course were answered for the candidate, but this masonic catechism was expected to be memorized.

After a few years, the ‘entered apprentice’ returns for the second ceremony, “master or fellow craft”. There is no attempt to frighten him. He again swears the previous oath, then is taken out by the ‘youngest master’, learns the sign, posture and ‘words of entrie’, and upon returning, makes the master’s sign and recites the greet-ing. The ‘youngest master’ again starts the rotation around the lodge, until it reaches the Master, who in turn whispers the word to the candidate on the “fyve points of the fellowship”, explained as foot, knee, heart, hand, ear, and a ‘gripe’ or handshake. The word for the Master or fellow craft is not mentioned in this or any of the previously mentioned documents. To receive a copy of this Scottish ritual, just email the library.

Other texts soon arrived. The English Sloane manuscript c. 1700, which introduces ‘without equivocation or mentall reservation’, the Scottish Dumfries Manuscript c. 1710, which describes a cabletow. These manuscripts were followed by several others texts…………What do you think??

Greetings Brothers,

This article will find us out of the dark months and into a very active fall. There have been many brothers working throughout the summer to prepare the valley for the upcoming fall and winter and we believe that you will be pleased to find that the Valley of Covington is pursuing those things that are important to Scottish Rite Masonry. We continue to make improvements to the Temple that will enhance our degree work and showcase the rituals.

The library is receiving new material for those that want to really study our history and valued contributions to society. We are working on ways to make that wonderful information more readily available to the members. Scottish Rite masonry is alive and well in the Valley of Covington.

Below is an agenda of the upcoming events scheduled for the valley through December 31st of this year and a partial list-ing of those persons who will be chairing the committees and are are stepping up to make it happen! We have established some new committees and reinvigorated some old ones with individuals who are committed and I believe it will soon start showing. Please keep in mind that dates are always subject to change due to conflicts with other events. Hope to see you soon!
