13th SEASON OF MASON'S THURSDAY NIGHT LIVE COURTHOUSE CONCERTS CONTINUES

Bring your lawn chairs and picnic blankets to downtown Mason on Thursday evening June 22nd to enjoy the sounds oflocal band Life Support Unplugged will perform, sponsored by Dart Container Corporation. The free concert is hosted by the Mason Area Chamber of Commerce.

This is the third scheduled concert in the Mason Area Chamber of Commerce's thirteenth season of "Thursday Night Live! Courthouse Concerts." Mason's summer series of live musical entertainment is presented by Independent Bank on eight select Thursday evenings this year. The remaining free outdoor concerts take place at 6:00 p.m. on the Ingham County Courthouse lawn in downtown Mason on June 22, July 6 and 20, August 10 and 24, and September 14, weather permitting. MACC has also set aside a rain date of August 31.

The Mason Optimist Club will be selling hot dogs, chips and pop nearby, so families can enjoy a picnic dinner during the concerts. Many concert-goers stop by restaurants and stores in Mason before and afterwards. "The Chamber hosting Thursday Night Live! Courthouse Concerts again is a way to bring more fun and excitement to downtown Mason," said Amy Hanson of Independent Bank, chair of the committee organizing the concerts.

She is especially happy this year since most of the performers are returning for encore performances. "We thank our sponsors and volunteers and want to let folks know that we can bring these concerts to our visitors and residents only through their generosity and the assistance of the City of Mason and Ingham County," she added.

The Brian Randall Band, a country group, will play on July 6, sponsored by Dart Bank. The Sea Cruisers, sponsored by Darrell's Market and Hardware, will entertain on July 20. On Thursday, August 10, sponsored by Commercial Bank Mason, the Backwoods Band will have the stage - back for their thirteenth straight year.

For the August 24 concert on the Courthouse lawn, sponsored by the Dart Container Corporation, the series will feature the Twilight Memories Big Band. The entertainment series concludes with the Mason High School Band on Thursday, September 14, led by Beth Bousfield, MHS Band Director. The Mason High School Cheer Squad will join them in the program sponsored by CP Federal Credit Union. All concerts are weather permitting.

UnoDeuce Multimedia's Paul Schmidt reports: "It has been a busy month here at UnoDeuce with a lot of changes that have happened as well as will happen. The first change to happen was the change in our logo. It was voted on by a focus group of peers and it was quite the challenge to come to this decision, but it was a consensus. The winner you can see next to this article. The next big thing is we moved! We have found a new space for us that I think we can grow into. It's a couple miles north of downtown Lansing. The address is: 15851 S. US 27, Building 20, Lansing, MI 48906. We will enjoy sharing the space with our new neighbors and partners: Signarama and Premier Franchise Group. I'm sure an open house will happen when we are completely situated.

MASON PROMISE SCHOLARSHIP EXTENDED TO 25 MORE STUDENTS

An additional 25 Mason students who were 5th graders last year have been selected to join the ranks of over 125 Mason Promise Scholars. The speaker for their induction ceremony last month was Judge Tom Boyd of the 55th District Court. Congratulatory gift bags were given to each student courtesy of area businesses.

In 2006, the Mason Promise Scholarship program was created to provide selected Mason students the opportunity to receive a two-year scholarship to attend Lansing Community College. A new group of students has been added each year since the program started. Local community members, organizations, businesses, and service clubs guide the program. Mason is one of over 80 communities in the nation now investing in early college goals through programs like the Mason Promise Scholarship.

Students are chosen in 5th grade and then upon graduation from Mason High School they are eligible to utilize their scholarship. Selection criteria include academic capability, motivation, behavior, parental support, and economic need. The scholarship's Pathway Program provides mentoring over the six years between selection and graduation from Mason Public Schools. There are currently a number of Mason Promise Scholars taking classes at LCC and a few have already graduated or transferred to universities. Some examples of their program choices include Computer Networking & Cyber Security, Education, Kinesiology, and Automotive Technology.

The Mason Promise Scholarship is also continuing its community fundraising. This year's goal is to raise an additional $25,000. The Mason Promise Scholarship is financed through private donations and grants from individuals and organizations. "We sincerely thank everyone for all the community support over the past years and encourage additional contributions to ensure that we can continue to support these students and uphold our promise to advance their education," says Liz Luttrell-Wilson, chair of the Mason Promise board. "Please consider this investment in our local young people and the future of Mason."

Send donations to the Mason Promise Scholarship Fund at the Capital Region Community Foundation, 330 Marshall Street, Suite 300, Lansing, Michigan 48912. For more information, please contact program chair Liz Luttrell-Wilson at 517-282-4202. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Passing along a letter from the Superintendent:

MASON PUBLIC SCHOOLS

Friends,

On Monday, June 12th, the Mason Public Schools Board of Education took action to place a $69.7 million bond proposal on the November 7, 2017, ballot. The Board of Education supported a recommendation from the School Study Committee (SSC) in support of the bond proposal. The final approval from the Board will take place on July 10th.

The SSC was formed in August 2016 and has met 17 times over the past 10 months. The SSC consisted of staff and community members who worked diligently vetting a multitude of options to improve the district's facilities. The SSC committee agendas, meeting minutes, presentations and proposals are posted on the district website.

The bond proposal includes significant improvements to safety and security, technology, site circulation, HVAC and mechanical and facility upgrades at all of the district's buildings. In addition, the proposal includes $1.95 million to purchase new buses.

Additional information will be shared with the staff and community as the recommendation moves forward.

KIPP ROAD & CEDAR STREET/MEIJERS SIGNAL CHANGES: The Ingham County Road Department will be adding a left turn signal for the north and south bound traffic at the Meijer's driveway and Cedar Street to improve north-south, "side-street" traffic flow at this location due to frequent back-ups on account of the left turns out of Meijer. And, they will make any necessary timing adjustments to both the Meijer-Cedar and the Jefferson-Hull signals. TRAFFIC STUDY = INTERSECTION OF KIPP ROAD & BARNES/EDEN ROAD: At the request of the Vevay Township Board, the Ingham County Road Department will soon be doing a traffic study at the intersection of Kipp Road and Barnes/Eden Road. There have been many requests for a traffic light at this intersection due to the many young drivers and large trucks using this intersection. LCC - MASON JEWETT CAMPUS by Mark Bathurst ([email protected]) Not often known for its willingness to change, the FAA is about to embark on one of the most significant changes to 14 CFR 147 (Aviation Maintenance Technician Schools) requirements in the last 25 years. In October, 2015, the FAA issued a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM) outlining significant proposed changes to the subjects we must teach and the hours allocated to those subjects. To quote the FAA, "These amendments would modernize and reorganize the required curriculum subjects... The amendments are necessary because the existing curriculums are outdated, do not meet current industry needs, and can be changed only through notice and rulemaking.... The FAA has made no curriculum changes since 1992. Based on recent studies and reports...the FAA has determined that the current school curriculums are dated and do not provide students with the skills necessary for maintaining modern aircraft." All Part 147 schools (there are 177 in the United States) must teach the same curriculum using the same minimum number of hours to complete the required subjects. Currently, all schools must provide at least 1900 hours of classroom and laboratory instruction, with the allocation being divided into three major areas: General, Airframe and Powerplant. Currently, General subjects require at least 400 hours of instruction, Airframe subjects require 750 hours, and Powerplant 750 hours. In their proposal, the FAA has recommended increasing General to 450 hours, Airframe to 800 hours and reducing Powerplant to 650 hours. These changes in hours reflect changed emphasis in a number of areas. General subjects will prospectively include Human Factors, Foreign Object Elimination and Alerts, Cautions and Warning Indications. Proposed changes to Airframe subjects include adding Rotorcraft Fundamentals and Water and Waste Systems. The Powerplant changes include combining several engine types into one category and reducing time allocated to other subjects. We anticipate the formal announcement in July 2017. Industry trade associations have been working with the FAA for a number of years to update the subject areas taught, hour requirements for the subjects and FAA testing standards once a student graduates from a program like LCC's and seeks licensure as an A&P mechanic. Moving into the 21st century is definitely needed. We're looking forward to the opportunities the changes will bring our students and our program.

LEAP Awards $30,000 for Placement of Public Art

from the Greater Lansing Business Monthly

The Lansing Economic Area Partnership (LEAP) announced a new round of Public Art for Communities grant recipient,

adding three communities to the growing list of municipalities participating in the LEAP Public Art for Communities grant program. The three communities that will receive funding are the City of East Lansing, City of Grand Ledge and City of Mason (Dart Bank). This adds to a total of seventeen $10,000 grants LEAP has awarded over five years to place public art in strategic, visible locations across the region. The City of Mason received another one of these grants a couple of years ago. The "Silver Respite" sculpture at the Hayhoe Riverwalk trail spur on Jefferson Street is the result.

Each community that applies for LEAP funding is required to adopt a public art policy or ordinance. The policies address issues of insurance, liability, and ongoing maintenance, as well as the formation of an arts committee to work with artists and art pieces representing the community. This year, LEAP has expanded the program to open the opportunity to organizations and businesses, as well as municipalities. "We were elated when we heard that LEAP opened this program to businesses and other organizations," said Peter Kubacki, president & CEO of Dart Bank. "Receiving this funding will help attract businesses to the area and promote economic growth near our headquarters in Mason. Dart Bank is eager to continue working with our communities to create a space we can all enjoy for years to come."

The grantees will have until October 3, 2017 to structure their programs, release their call for artists and construct and place an art piece. Each community has prioritized a location based on their own placemaking strategies, taking both pedestrian and vehicular traffic patterns into consideration, as well as the business case for attracting talent to their communities.

SOME MICHIGAN COMPANIES ARE 'TURNING AWAY WORK' AS 100K JOBS GO UNFILLED The 100,000 estimate for open jobs comes in part from openings posted on the Pure Michigan Talent Connect website, which on May 31 listed 97,766 jobs available. Many of those positions represent skilled or management positions across a range of industries, leaving other hourly and part-time jobs uncounted. Monthly employment data for Michigan released in late May showed an overall unemployment rate of 3.7 percent. That compares to 4.5 percent a year earlier, when 81,000 fewer people were in the labor force - meaning that 94,000 more Michiganders were employed this spring.

COMMUNITY MESSAGING CONSOLIDATED

To better serve the residents of Ingham County, all jurisdictions in the County have joined together to use one platform for community messaging. It's called the Capital Area Ingham County Alert System. Functionally it will combine both the emergency notifications previously sent through CodeRED, as well as the community news features (traffic accidents, event updates, etc.) from Nixle. In addition, it lets you the user control how you want to be notified whether by phone, email, or even fax machine! Please go to https://member.everbridge.net/index/892807736727116#/signup and sign up for the new Capital Area Ingham County Alert System as soon as you can (the CodeRED system is already offline). If you have any questions, please contact https://www.facebook.com/inghamhsem/ or https://www.facebook.com/LansingEM/ If you were a Nixle subscriber, your basic information was transferred over automatically for emergency alerts but you will miss out on many of the optional communications, so go ahead and sign up again to stay current.

SPONSORS AND CONTRIBUTIONS NEEDED FOR EVENTS, RAFFLES & AUCTIONS

Businesses and organizations say that they join the Chamber because of our networking and community events. However, many members miss the members-only opportunity to get visibility at those events. Many very visible and important sponsorships are still available for upcoming 2017 events. Contact Doug Klein at [email protected] or at (517) 676-1046 to find out what sponsorships are still available. Our networking events attract hundreds of Chamber business, civic and community leaders from throughout the Mason area. Our community events, like our festival shows, concerts, and parades, attract thousands from the Greater Lansing area. Funds raised from events and programs help offset the cost for membership programs and community services, and keep Chamber dues affordable for all businesses. Sponsors gain valuable exposure with recognition in ads, newsletters, promotional posters, listings in the event programs, and on the Chamber's website. The limited number of top level Presenting sponsorships offer the greatest exposure at the events and in Chamber publications. The many other sponsorship levels also offer great visibility in event announcements and materials. The Chamber is pleased to announce that tickets are now available for the Part A of the 16th annual MACC Raffle. This year, the prizes are themed merchandise and the tickets are only $5.00 each. The annual fundraiser will be done in two parts: a Summer Raffle with tickets available from May 6th through August 10th and a Winter Raffle with tickets available from September 14th through December 7th. Chamber members can also play an important role in events through promotional contributions of items needed for raffle prizes, door prizes, and auctions throughout the year. Contributions of all kinds, from gift certificates to popular gift items help raise significant funds for the Chamber. We love to promote your business! Items with your company or organization's logo are most needed. Auction and raffle items should have at least a $25 value. To gain maximum exposure, contact the Chamber office for how your business or organization can participate! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Final Note:

Continuing a 45-year tradition, the Mason Area Chamber of Commerce publishes its "MASON in Motion" printed and mailed newsletter near the end of each month. This hard-copy newsletter has information about Chamber events and programs, new Chamber members, news from member businesses and organizations, and more - in a short four-page format. The several insert pages included in the newsletter each month are designed to be removed for easy sharing or posting within a business or organization. For this reason, the Chamber has decided to continue distributing this newsletter in the conventional manner with no opt-out. This also maintains value for limited advertising. Advertising inserts are just $100 per insertion to reach 450 key decision-makers in the Mason area. This newsletter is mailed to all contact people for Chamber members, Chamber volunteers, and select stakeholders. A .pdf copy of the newsletter is also available to all the same day it is delivered by the post office at the Chamber's website www.masonchamber.org. Deadline is the 20th of the month for all submissions. Items are included as space is available and submissions are edited for space and consistency of the publication. Since August of 2006, the Chamber also publishes a mid-month "MASON in Motion UPDATE" newsletter electronically. This e-mailed newsletter is forwarded to all who have submitted their e-mail addresses to the Chamber, provided they are associated with a Chamber member, are a Chamber volunteer, or are a select stakeholder. A link to the archive on the website for the .pdf copies of the printed and mailed "MASON in Motion" newsletter is included in the UPDATE. A .pdf copy of this UPDATE newsletter is also available to all at the Chamber's website www.masonchamber.org under the "Newsletters" tab. Deadline is the 10th of the month for all UPDATE submissions. All items submitted are included, subject to minor editing for publication consistency. It is the intention of the Chamber to limit broadcast e-mails to those who have e-mail addresses submitted to the Chamber to 24 times per year at most. Of course, those who are Chamber leaders and volunteers get much more frequent information e-mailed to them. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
