Tonye Aganaba, with a soulful and powerful voice, was the go-to singer for Vancouver’s EDM producers and DJs for years. After two solo R&B/soul self-releases (2013’s The Solar Twin and 2011’s White Wizard), she was signed to 604 Records and her new EP Villain is a fun, groovy, electronic-spiked R&B/soul recording. It declares the arrival of a powerful artist not to be messed with.

Tonye is outgoing and outspoken. She’s a big personality, who can just as quickly laugh at the error of her ways as she can fall in love. Her music is all about that: Love. She writes better in hindsight — “Oh, that guy! What was I thinking?” In fact, she can’t wait to call the guy out from the stage who inspired her song “Villain” and declare her worth (and every woman’s) in her anthem “Queen.” The lady speaks her mind.

Charles Demers (MC)Vancouver writer, comedian, political activist and SFU alumnus

Charles Demers is a comedian, author, performer, and playwright. One of the most frequently appearing stars of CBC Radio’s smash hit “The Debaters,” he also wrote the bestselling essay collections ‘Vancouver Special’ and ‘The Horrors,’ as well as the three inaugural scripts of the popular annual ‘East Van Panto.’

He is a lecturer in the prestigious Creative Writing Program at the University of British Columbia. At the age of 19, he successfully led a bid to organize the video arcade where he worked into the Canadian Autoworkers Union, though the unit decertified before achieving a first contract. He lives in East Vancouver with his wife Cara and their daughter Joséphine.

Hard Rubber Orchestra Disbelief. Rage. Excitement.

On June 15, 2011, lawlessness, violence, and destruction quickly consumed downtown Vancouver following its home team’s loss in Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Finals. A riot that lasted five hours defied rationale, flying in the face of who we think we are as Canadians.

Today’s performance will be an excerpt from RIOT, a work-in-progress that merges video footage of the 2011 melee with high energy music inspired by the chaos of that night. Driven by an investigation into mob mentality, privilege, culpability, and sports riots in North America, RIOT seeks to immerse one in the incomprehensible.

Influenced by electronica and classical avant-garde art, John Korsrud conceived the project, composing music performed by members of his genre shattering Hard Rubber Orchestra. Video and stills from the riot were edited by filmmaker Brian Johnson and synced with the music with help from Aram Coen and Sammy Chien. RIOT is a work in progress to be presented as a full 60-minute production in 2019.

The award-winning Hard Rubber Orchestra, formed in 1990, has released 3 CDs, toured across internationally and produced large scale productions including Cantata for a King, a critique of the impact of the American music industry; and The Ice Age, a new music ice show inspired by man’s obsession with sports.

Binners’ ProjectAn innovative social and economic initiative dedicated to working with and for binners

Sawagi Taiko formed in 1990 and was the first all Asian women taiko group in Canada. The group has performed in a variety of music festivals and other cultural and community events across Canada and the US.

Most of the pieces performed by Sawagi Taiko are composed or arranged by its

These different skills give a distinctive interdisciplinary feel to Sawagi’s repertoire. With diverse experiences as Asians, the members of Sawagi Taiko explore their cultural roots through taiko. The group operates as a collective and nurtures the creative contributions of each member. In performance, Sawagi Taiko presents an image of Asian women as strong and powerful.

In anticipation of her upcoming interdisciplinary performance *Un/Seen*, Lief Hall will be presenting documentation of the piece during the research and creation stages.
