Tim Malone, Principal

Dear Parents, !It has been awhile since our last newsletter. I hope everyone was able to spend quality time with family

and enjoy the holiday season. !The spring semester has begun, giving students a new start with grades and, with some, even new classes. It is extremely important to the staff at MCAA to provide the means for all of our students to be successful. I want you to know that we have staff mentors available for students, we have student tutors, we have after school tutoring, and other help available. Please call the office if you are concerned with your student’s academic progress. !Regarding the arts, we have the Advanced Drama production of “Oliver” and the Beginning Drama production of “Shrek Jr.” to look forward to. We will also have a strings performance in late February and the band will participate in the Bok Kai parade in March. !I want to thank all the parents who helped to clean and organize the storage room, which is used to store building materials, props, and other items. These parents also have been cleaning and organizing the theater, and removed our stored items out of a room at Marysville High School and brought them to MCAA. This is just one example of the many ways that parents help MCAA be so successful. !I am looking forward to an exciting semester. !Tim Malone

Thank you to all of our Volunteers!

!Hello MCAA Students and Parents, !Happy New Year from the Counseling Office! It’s hard to believe it is second semester already…June is going to be here before we know it. !

Second semester classes are well under way and all schedule change requests were finalized in December. Students will need to keep their current course schedule until the end of the year, but they will have an opportunity to start thinking about what they plan to take next year in the coming months. Course requests for next year’s classes will be discussed later this spring and every effort will be made to help students get the classes they want. !MCAA hosted a Cash for College Workshop for seniors on Thursday, January 29th. This workshop provided students with assistance completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Representatives from the Yuba College Financial Aid Office were on hand to answer questions and help with the process. Additionally, those who attended the workshop, completed their FAFSA and submitted a quick survey are now eligible to win one of two $2,000 regional scholarships. This workshop helped students complete a very important step as they prepare for college next year. Any seniors who were unable to be there can come into Counseling for help completing their FAFSA, which should be submitted no later than March 2nd. !Want more free money to attend college?? More and more scholarship opportunities are becoming available for seniors. Updates are posted in the daily bulletin and added to the Scholarship Binder in the Counseling Office. Don’t forget to come by and check it out. !Yuba College QuickReg information has just been released. This is a program offered to seniors who plan to attend Yuba College in the fall. The first phase of QuickReg is the application process so seniors who plan to participate will need to attend a workshop sometime between 9:00 am and 2:00 pm on Saturday, February 21st (at Yuba College or the Sutter Center) or Saturday, February 28th (Sutter Center only) for assistance completing their Yuba College application. No appointment is necessary, but to be eligible to participate in the QuickReg program students must attend. Participation in this program gives students support with the enrollment process and also gives them priority registration which is a huge bonus! More information about this valuable program will be provided to seniors in the coming weeks. !Juniors who are planning to attend a 4-year university and are interested in getting a jump start on the SAT this spring should come by the Counseling Office for information about how to register. Upcoming test dates are March 14th, May 2nd and June 6th. PSAT results will be delivered in the next few weeks to those students who took the test last fall. Sophomores will be taking the California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE) for the first time this spring. Test dates are March 17th and 18th. Please make every effort to have your child in school, well rested and prepared to take this very important test. Math and English teachers have been working with all students on skills and strategies needed to successfully pass the CAHSEE. A minimum passing score is 350 (380 is proficient) and once a section has been passed it does not have to be taken again. !Warmest Regards, Christy Spade Counselor

MCAA SPOTLIGHT

!The math department has started the spring

semester on a strong note. We are in the

process of preparing the sophomore class to

take the California High School Exit Exam. The

middle school classes recently completed their

2nd quarter district benchmark assessments and

now are continuing in the new curriculum of the

California Common Core. Math can be a very

challenging subject particularly in the spring

semester. If you are having difficulty in your

math course, please feel free to attend any of

the after school tutoring opportunities. Below

is the after school tutoring schedule. Tutoring

begins directly after school and runs until

approximately 3:30PM.

2:50 – 3:30PM Monday By Appointment Tuesday Land Wednesday McLennon Thursday deVlaming Friday None

Dear Parents,  Help keep our school attendance percentage up! If your child has a doctor, dentist, or personal appointment, it really helps our school if they can be present part of the day. Please call me to verify your child’s absences, also for absences of 1 day or more please call  me to arrange short term independent study. Students with perfect attendance for the 2014-2015 school year will receive a $25.00 gift certificate for the Yuba Sutter Mall. Third quarter progress grades will be mailed home February 13. If you need information to create an Aeries account to check grades and missing assignments, come in to the office or call me. !Sincerely, Brenda Brown Counseling Secretary  749-6148

!The Drama department is currently hard at work

preparing 2 new shows for this semester.

Shrek will be performed by the beginning

drama department on March 27-29

The advanced drama class will present Oliver on May 7-10 and May 15-17.

We hope to see you there.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!

Our shows are only successful with parent

support.

We are in need of volunteers with everything

from costumes, set building, painting, ticket/

refreshment sales, backstage supervision and

more. You do not need special skills, we can

train you. This is a great way to earn your

volunteer hours. You do not need a student in a production to help. Please call the MCAA

office and provide your contact information.
