Maryland leads the way On 28th April, Maryland welcomed the Headteacher and his team from Charles Dickens

Research school in Southwark. They visited to find out more about Education4Change, a

programme that challenges racism through conversation and curriculum. Maryland is a model

school for this programme in Newham and the country.

Educational visits We have a number of visits coming up from the Freshwater

Theatre Company for Years 4,6 and Reception. These

memorable experiences are in place of our usual educational

trips to help bring the curriculum alive for our pupils. Please

remember to pay the requested contributions for these

valuable experiences.

Volunteers—welcome back! We can now welcome volunteers in school, so if you would like to help in class, in the school

garden or with our chickens, please inform the school office. We will provide weekly COVID testing to ensure our environment remains COVID secure.

Year 4 Multiplication Check Year 4 will be taking part in the government’s national multiplication check in June. You can check which times tables your child’s year

group should know by the end of the year.

Fun on the beach! ‘Negril Beach’ in our school garden is now officially open for the Summer term! The children have been enjoying playing in the soft sand after so much time indoors and at home .

A special thank you We would like to thank Barbara Hearn (a Y2 pupil’s grandparent) for her generous book donation to our Education4Change collection of books. These books are a valuable resource that teachers can use to support our lessons on equality, anti-racism and diversity.

We are pleased to tell you that Maryland School is leading the way in teaching diversity in Newham with an exciting and unique programme called Education 4 Change (E4C for short) founded by Lorna Jackson. The E4C programme is fully backed by the Local Authority and governors and will be launched for all Newham schools in the Summer Term with a wonderful art project called Art4Change, written by Maryland teachers, which promotes diversity and inclusion through art. We are so proud! The E4C Executive Team includes three serving Newham Headteachers who are experienced leaders across all phases of education, Lorna Jackson, Lando Du Plooy, and Joan Deslandes, OBE. The team have recruited 50 educators to train schools to have confidence to have courageous conversations about race with teaching staff, young people and their communities addressing both overt and covert racism head-on. E4C is part of Newham’s strategy to ‘tackle racism, inequality and disproportionality As a model school for E4C, Maryland hosts visits, such as the one from Charles Dickens Research School who said…. We were blown away by your amazing school and the work you have done to create E4C and to fully embed it across your school, community and beyond. I have learnt so much from you both and your dedicated and enthusiastic colleagues who also spoke. We were particularly impressed with your E4C library and the corresponding plans/synopsis that went with them. We will certainly be replicating the melanin assembly so thank you for sharing it with us. Please do keep in contact with us because we will jump at the chance to work with your further or to buy in to the E4C when the time comes.
