maryland milestones
TRANSCRIPT
One of the unique attributes of the Anacostia Trails Heritage Area is a strong emphasis on arts, performances, and local crafts. Arts galleries, studios, performance spaces, and unique artistic events are where visitors can experience visual artists, writers, poets, performers, and craftpeople making their own Maryland Milestones.
Start with the Gateway Arts District, at the southern end of U.S. Route 1, a two-mile corridor for arts activities of all types — including over 30 works of public art. The Arts District offers the richness and diversity of the metropolitan region, but retains at its core the heart of the four small towns: Mount Rainier, Brentwood, North Brentwood, and Hyattsville. Visit key destinations — Brentwood’s Gateway Arts Center’s Brentwood Arts Exchange, Mount Rainier’s Joe’s Movement Emporium, or Hyattsville’s Pyramid Atlantic Arts Center — for innovative, curated galleries, performances, studios, and classes. Come back often for annual studio tours too.
The Publick Playhouse, located in Cheverly, is a historic movie theater transformed into a destination for music, dance, film, and drama performances owned by the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission.
In College Park, the University of Maryland’s Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center is building the future of the arts with adventuresome programming in dance, theatre, music and interdisciplinary art. Also on campus are four art galleries — Herman Maril Gallery, David Driskell Center for African American Art, Stamp Gallery and University of Maryland Art Gallery.
Nearby is the University of Maryland University College Art Gallery at the Inn & Conference Center. Off campus, try a program at the College Park Arts Exchange or eat and take in a variety of performing arts at Milkboy ArtHouse.
The City of Greenbelt has multiple art opportunities. The Old Greenbelt Theatre is an arthouse theater, home to the Utopia Film Festival and a Classic Film Series. The Community Center houses artist studios and galleries. Theater is performed live at Greenbelt Arts Center and live music — including music festivals — is found at the New Deal Cafe.
Montpelier Arts Center in Laurel — also owned by MNCPPC — a place for performances, arts creation, and exhibitions. Also in Laurel are two performing arts spaces - Venus Theatre and Laurel Mill Playhouse.
Finally, the City of Bowie has a variety of arts opportunities from the Bowie Center for the Performing Arts to the Bowie Playhouse to visual arts in City Hall Gallery.
Come and explore some new artistic opportunities!
From murals to glass blowing, from pottery to screenprinting, from painting to metal working, the Gateway Arts District is home to a diverse group of artists producing and creating new and exciting artistic works.
The University of Maryland’s Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center has a wide schedule of theater and music. But don’t miss the range of smaller venues like Joe’s Movement Emporium, where you can get close to the action.
