LeagueofWomenVotersofMaryland95thBirthdayCelebrationLeagueofWomenVotersofMaryland95thBirthdayCelebrationHISTORYOFLWVMDLOCALLEAGUESHarfordCountyAnneArundelCountyFoundedin1949,theLeagueofWomenVotersofHarfordCountywasthefirstprivategroupallowedtoregistervotersthere.Theywerealsothefirsttoholdcandidateforums,andwereinstrumentalinthechartergovernmentmovement.OneofAnneArundel’searliestmembers,Mrs.HomerWinchell,recalledthe“theLeaguewhichwasorganized(inAnnapolis)soonafterthepassageofthe‘SusanB.Anthony’amendment,lost‘itsfranchise’,becauseofextremeonepartypoliticking!”HappilytheAnneArundelLeaguewasreestablishedin1944.HowardCountyMarionSattertwaite,longknowninAnnapolisas“Mrs.LeagueofWomenVoters”believedtheoutstandingsuccessoftheAnneArundelLeaguewasthepassageoftheHomeRuleCharterforthecounty.Membersworkedhardwithothercitizenstoget10,000signaturesonapetitiontoputhomeruleontheballot.Itpassedinthe1962election.TheLeagueofWomenVotersofHowardCountyhelditsfirstannualmeetingin1946withJeanetteSmithelectedpresident.Duesweresetat$.25andaKnowYourCountypublicationwasinitiated.TheLeaguewasasupporterofNewTownZoningwhichallowedthecreationofthenewcityofColumbia.PresidentAnitaIribeplayedakeyroleinthisadvocacyeffort.BaltimoreCityKentCountyTheBaltimoreCityLeaguewasorganizedbySadieCrockinin1920.Lecturesbygovernmentofficials,collegeprofessorsandcandidateswereorganizedtohelpmembersgainknowledgeabouttheLeagueandthefunctionofgovernmentofficialsatalllevels.LeagueofWomenVotersofKentCountyhelditsfirstmeetingonJune2,1976,undertheleadershipofPatHartfield,whowasresponsiblefororganizingthegroupandbecamethefirstpresident.ProvincialstatuswasgrantedbythestateLeagueonJuly16ofthatyear.TheKentCountyLeagueachievedfullLeaguestatusonMay17,1977.Duetonationalconcernssurroundingtherecurringoilcrises,theKentLeaguetookonanenergyeducationstudyasoneofitsfirstprojects,andpresentedthereporttotheKentCountyBoardofCommissionersonJanuary3,1979.Inthe40s,theLeagueofWomenVotersofBaltimoreCitydevelopedapopularspeaker’sbureauwhichgavepresentationsontopicssuchas“CivilDefense”,“Rationing”and“IsolationismAgain?”.Theyalsopresentedastudycourseon“DumbartonOaks–ASteppingStonetoPermanentPeace.”IthelpedpreparetheirmembersfordiscussionaboutthestructureandpurposeoftheUnitedNations.Mid-ShoreFormerlytheTalbotCountyLeaguewhichwasfoundedin1971byVirginiaHenry,theLeagueofWomenVotersofPage10May30,2015Page15May30,2015�
