It was inspiring to recently see several former Maryborough State High School students in the 2020 Queen’s Birthday Honours list, with local icons Grieg Bolderrow and Ken Murtagh receiving an Order of Australia Medal, and Sarah Brown receiving an award as Member of the Order of Australia. Each of these former students received their honour in service of their community, or working for the rights and advocacy of others. We congratulate them and I challenge our current students, whether they hold a badge or not, to think beyond themselves and ask ‘what can I do to better others?’ While on the topic of success, it gives me great pride that Maryborough State High School has been announced as a finalist in six categories for the Australian Education Awards. In each of the categories there are only eight finalists in the country – among the categories are Best Government School in Australia and Best Regional School in the nation. FraserPop, our Diploma of Business assessment piece, has also been made a finalist for Best Co-Curricular Program. This range of finalist categories reaffirms Maryborough State High School’s commitment to making sure we offer the very best education for your child regardless of postcode. As we look forward to the remainder of the year, we will also look towards our major events in the school. We have already announced to our Year 12s a moving of the 2020 Formal from June to October to ensure we are abiding by Health and Safety requirements. A reminder to all families that our Awards Night and Sports Awards have also moved to December 7 and 8. This is to ensure accurate calculations of award winners, including the Dux and All Rounder, with changes to the Senior Curriculum. Years 10, 11 and 12 will be invited to return to school to receive their awards. We will also be announcing some changes to how awards are calculated to ensure all those worthy of celebration are acknowledged. We will publish these calculations in the coming weeks. I will be asking families in Semester 2 to participate in an ongoing series of evenings where we hear from parents about their students, the school they attend and any suggestions they may have for improvement. Each night will be themed (ie one on Behaviour, one on Curriculum and so on) and will be part of an ongoing process of review and revision to make sure that we continually improve and are considerate of all aspects of the school community. We will open this up to families once COVID restrictions subside. Should you wish to discuss anything as a matter of urgency, I invite all families to attend the P and C Meeting (every month on the 4 th Monday; commencing at 5:30pm) or make an appointment to see the Deputy Principal or myself. From the Principal… We are here, nearly at the end of what we can all admit has been an interesting term. Our students have returned and once again filled the halls and grounds with noise and excitement – a much-needed return to our new normal.

Guidance Officer NEWS We the Differents and Spark their Future websites

We the Differents site is for disengaged and at-risk youth: Education your way. We The Differents is a collective of information, tips and ideas for young people to learn what’s on offier and find the right support/options to make the most of their education. Encouraging young people to find and embrace their ‘different’ can help to build resilience and motivate students to navigate challenges they may be facing in their education journey. This site is frequently updated with new content and articles to help young people to consider how their own skills and interests have real-world value – helping students find the resources they need to take control of their education and their future. https://www.wethedifferents.qld.edu.au/ Spark Their Future site is for parent and carers of disengaged and at-risk youth. There’s no one-size-fits-all approach when supporting youth engagement, but all young people have a spark. Something that inspires and drives them. This can be the spark that helps them to find resilience, build a sense of self and self-worth, to overcome diversity and find relevance in their eduation. Supportiing continuity of education for disengaged students requires strong collaboration and communication between schools and families. Through the Spark Their Future site, parents and carers can find practical tips, information and support to help young people gain the most from their education. https://www.sparktheirfuture.qld.edu.au/

Hospitality NEWS Senior Hospitality students practise their coffee making skills Our new café on the deck at the front of J Block is proving to be very popular for morning coffees that are being supplied by the SRC team. Baristas currently include Year 12 Hospitality students who are honing their skills in preparing and serving a variety of coffees to fulfil the requirements of their Certificate 2 in Hospitality. Commencing in Term 3, our Year 11 Hospitality students will take over this role as they are presently being trained to become competent baristas as part of their unit of study. These ‘real life’ opportunities give our students the confidence to move directly into the workforce with the skills they have acquired.

Year 12 Hospitality take-away lunches…a huge success! As our senior Hospitality catering events have been cancelled due to Covid 19 precautions, our take-away meals initiative has started to roll out each Friday till the end of the term.

In Week 6, we offered Chicken & Pasta Stirfry, which gave the students opportunity to demonstrate their competency in kitchen management while preparing pasta, various knife skills, chicken and vegetable cookery, as well as teamwork and serving/presentation techniques. We received overwhelming compliments from our customers.

Week 7, saw us serving Scandinavian

Open Sandwiches to staff and Year 12 students. This option involved the students in a variety of work stations – making Tempura Batter for the Deep Fried Sweet Potato Straws, preparing Grilled Steak, steaming fresh Asparagus, toasting Jumbo Bread Rolls, as well as preparing baby spinach, cherry tomatoes, red onion and shallots. Many techniques and skills were demonstrated by the students in order to assemble and serve the 60 orders for the beginning of lunchtime. Again, we received great reviews from our customers.
