How did Farglory conceive of this project, and what encouraged you to choose Abu Dhabi?
One of the marquee elements of this project is the involvement of famous architect Richard Rogers. How did he get involved, and why?
How did they come up with the design scheme, and what were the goals you had in mind?
Around 2008, Farglory leadership began to seriously contemplate their strategy by scouting everywhere for opportunities to develop. After a while, we zoomed in on the GCC area for one simple reason: our belief that this is the world’s emerging market with the most gross potential.
As the midpoint between Europe and Asia, we think that this region is a natural starting point for our increasing globalization strategy.
The thing that we loved about Abu Dhabi specifically was its stable, demand-driven real estate climate, especially compared to Dubai, which we feel is a more speculative market.
As far as Al Maryah Island, we wanted to buy in to the government’s blueprint for the city laid out in the Abu Dhabi 2030 plan. We were excited about their commitment to building a city of the future, and we believe in that vision as well.
We have worked with Richard Rogers’s office before, and we know that they are always looking for the best projects and the best developments worldwide—and we of course are always looking to work with the best architects. They initially discussed with us some projects in the Far East, but we soon found that their vision as well as ours was best suited for this part of the world, so we brought them here and the rest is history.
Abu Dhabi is a harbour city, and we wanted this to be reflected in the design. The sloped towers together evoke the image of a ship’s sail, and the building’s many open balconies and decks give residents a feel of being on a luxury cruise ship.
