Ms. Potts retired in 1993 after 10 years of service. She spent half a century in Bahrain and gained respect from the community due to her contributions and hard work. Ms. Potts was also a member of the Awali Arts Drama Club and later joined the Bahrain Theatre Club in Manama and acted as prompter, made costumes and was the club’s ticket agent in Awali. Ms. Potts friend Claire Cunningham, a volunteer with the Bahrain Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals said, “Mary arrived in Bahrain in 1964 to work for Bapco after working in Kuwait as an infant teacher for two years for the oil company in Ahmadi. “Mary’s expertise with children was shown in the annual Nativity play that she wrote annually, which was produced in Awali hall throughout the years she lived in Bahrain,” she said. Ms. Cunningham added that Ms. Potts was later promoted to school principal and was very well supported by her staff and pupils. Ms. Potts retired in 1993 and returned to England where she was active with the local walking groups, an embroidery society and church organisations. One of her former students, Ian Best, stated “Pupils will recall Ms. Potts as a towering figure, although that was mainly because we were two foot six inches high at the time. “She was always immaculately turned out and often seen cycling to school on a bicycle borrowed from the set of the Wizard of Oz, complete with wicker basket which consistently hung from her elbow, goods covered with what appeared to be a picnic blanket during regimented tours of the corridor,” he said. “A stalwart of the school, Ms. Potts served Bapco and Awali for many years and will be fondly remembered by pupils of a very happy era in Bahrain’s history.” Ms. Potts was laid to rest at the Douglas Borough Crematorium.
