The remaining alternative topermit riverboat gaming in theparish is to get the Legislatureto designate the Sabine site asan approved riverboat site.

Both Rep. Flavin andSenator Theunissen said theyoppose moving of the gamingboat to Cameron Parish butagreed to introduce the Parish’sbill although they would notsupport it. Jurors decided itwould be better to get Rep. Firthto introduce the bill as he wouldsupport it.

Firth said that he does notrepresent the parish at thispoint but he would be glad toauthor the bill and support it.

The proposed legislationwould add part of the SabineRiver and Sabine Lake to thedesignated list.

Firth said that it will be hardto get the bill passed but if thatis what Cameron Parish wants,so be it.”

Firth said “I came from aparish that voted out gambling,but I supported it in my presentdistrict because it’s what the res-idents there want.”

Theunissen explained thatthe wording “by request” wouldremain on the bill, since it wasrequested by the parish and notby the legislators.

To make up for being closedChristmas Day and New Year’sDay, Sabine National WildlifeRefuge will be open for water-fowl hunting Thursday, Dec. 26,and Thursday, Jan. 2, accordingto Refuge Manager Chris Pease.

Vastar Road is open to accessthe 10,000 acre hunting areaopened two years ago, however,due to damage around some ofthe bridges during periods ofhigh water, a portion of the roadwill be closed until repairs canbe made. The road is open for3.7 miles. The entrance toVastar Road is the woodenbridge across the highway fromthe West Cove Recreation Areaand adjacent to the parking areafor the Wetland Walkway.Hunters can park in pull-offareas along the road and walk inor hand launch small boats. Novehicles with boat trailers willbe allowed on Vastar road. Thisunit is also accessible by launch-ing at the West CoveRecreational Area boat launch-es. Additionally, there is a 2-slotsalt water launch on the northside for those hunters whochoose to hunt east of Highway27.

Every hunter must be in pos-session of a signed and datedfree hunt permit while hunting.Permits may be picked up at theWest Cove Boat Launch areaand at the Sabine NWR VisitorCenter on Highway 27.

Elections will finally come toan end for awhile when therunoff race for U. S. Senate isheld this Saturday.

Incumbent Mary Landrieu,Democrat, is opposed by chal-lenger Suzanne Haik Terrell,Republican.

The race has generated stateand national interest with anumber of national political fig-ures, including the President,coming to Louisiana to politicfor either of the two candidates.

Since there are no local,parish or other state races onSaturday’s ballot, the voterturnout in the parish could below.

The Cameron Parish SchoolBoard at its monthly meetingMonday bid farewell to two of itscurrent members and to theparish superintendent, all ofwhom are retiring.

District 2 board memberGlenda Abshire and District 5member Tony Johnson, both ofwhom have served two 4-yearterms, chose not to seek re-elec-tion and their terms will endDec. 31.

Superintendent Judy Jones,who has held that position since1998 and who has been with theCameron school system for 33years, also is retiring at the endof the year.

Cameron parish’s six schoolprincipals were all present at themeeting and presented Miss

Jones with a travel certificate.Pat Howerton, board presi-

dent, presented Ms. Jones withan engraved plaque and clock onbehalf of the board members.

Ms. Jones said she will bearound for a week or so inJanuary to provide for a smoothtransition of duties to the newsuperintendent who will benamed at a special meeting onJan. 6.

Three new school boardmembers also will take theiroffices on Jan. 6. DwayneSanner will take the District 2seat being vacated by Mrs.Abshire and Loston McEverswill take the District 5 seatbeing vacated by Mr. Johnson.

In addition Rachel Abadiewill be sworn in as the boardmember for the newly createdDistrict 7.

The Tarpons down 21-7 in the4th quarter converted a fake punton 4th and inches to keep a scoringdrive alive. Tarpon quarterbackBrett Baccigalopi hit Trey Lute ona 6 yard scoring toss to bringSouth Cameron to within 21-14but the Tarpons were unable tostop Sterlington as RyanHammock caught a 38 yard passfrom Jacob Ashley to put the finalnail in the coffin for the Tarpons.

The Tarpons finished a greatseason at 12-1.

The South Cameron Tarponsput up a valiant effort to the end,but it was the SterlingtonPanthers (13-0) that advanced tothis week’s semifinal game with a27 to 14 victory over the Tarponslast week

The Panthers, with a definitesize advantage over the Tarpons,rushed for 194 yards on 45 carrieswith their punishing ball controloffense. The Panthers convertedfour 4th down plays on two sepa-rate scoring drives to help put theTarpons away and spoil theirundefeated season.

The Panthers got on the boardfirst in the initial quarter on a 14yard Fernando Hurtado run.Hurtado finished the night with109 yards on 26 carries. TheTarpons matched that score in thesecond quarter on a Kris Benoit 4yard run and a Nick Boudreauxextra point kick.

The Panthers took the lead forgood in the second quarter on a 68yard drive that ate up nearly nineminutes on the clock. Hurtadoscored again on a 1 yard plunge toput the Panthers up 14 to 7.

The Cameron Parish SchoolBoard will select a new SchoolSuperintendent on Monday,Jan. 6 using a unique votingprocedure that board membershope will be fairer and moreexpeditious.

The new superintendent willreplace Judy Jones who is retir-ing at the end of December.

The three were interviewedby the board Monday morningwith three board members whowill take office in January sit-ting in..

The three candidates are AlBurguieres, Doug Chance andJohn DeBarge.

The three, along with thefour returning board members,will be sworn in on Jan. 6 at a 9a.m. special meeting. An elec-tion of officers will be held andthen the new superintendentwill be named.

In the past, nominations forsuperintendent have beenmade, seconded and voted on.In instances in the past, theboard deadlock for several votes.

Monday School BoardPresident Pat Howerton pro-posed a novel voting procedurethat will eliminate the nomina-tion procedure and hopefullyprovide for a fairer and quickermeans of election.

Under this procedure, whichthe board agreed to, all threecandidates will be presumed tobe nominated.

Board members will writetheir individual choices on slipsof paper which will then begiven to the board presidentwho will read the votes out loudthereby making them public.

If no one receives a majority

vote (4 out of the 7 votes), thecandidate with the lowest votewill be eliminated and anotherpaper ballot will be taken andread out loud.

Howerton said he had legaladvice that this method of votingis legal since the vote of eachboard member will be made pub-lic.

The newly elected superin-tendent will be expected to beginhis new duties immediatelyworking with the outgoingsuperintendent for a smoothtransition.

Sand is being pumped from offshore to restore an area of thebeach that has been badly eroded in the past.

Mr. Arceneaux diedSaturday, Nov. 30, 2002 in aLake Charles hospital.

A native of Hackberry, he hadlived in Lake Charles for 41years. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy serving in Shanghainear the end of WWII, trainingin demolition with the scoutersand raiders, now recognized asthe Navy Seals.

He was a graduate ofHackberry High School andattended USL, LSU, andMcNeese State University,where he was a founding mem-ber of the McNeese Rodeo Club.He spent a career in the oilfieldsfrom Wyoming to Louisianaretiring as an area foreman forAmoco Oil Company in LakeCharles, He was awarded a life-time membership to theSouthwest Chapter of theAmerican Petroleum Institute.

He was a member and formerdirector of the Calcasieu AreaBoy Scouts of America and wasawarded the Silver BeaverEmblem for his services. He vol-unteered his time coachingLittle League and Pee Wee foot-ball in Lake Charles and GrandChenier He was a former altar

boy and member of Our LadyQueen of Heaven CatholicChurch as well as the Knights ofColumbus.

already, as of today you onlyhave 3 more days to do so, as the

first split of hunting season clos-es Sunday, Dec. 8 in the westzone and pintail season was thefirst 30 days. The second splitwill open on Dec. 21, but no pin-tails can be killed.

Goose season also closes onDec. 8, but reopens on Dec. 9 to13 on the Conservation order forblues, snows and ross geeseonly. The regular season’s sec-ond split will reopen on Dec. 14,so speckle belly season will beclosed until the 14th.

Remember coot season runsthe same as duck season. Snipeseason will close Dec. 8 andreopen on Dec. 14. Deer seasonhere in Zone 3 closed on Dec. 1,but will reopen on Sat., Dec. 7.Muzzleloader season is nowclosed for this season in our areaand there are no more doe daysleft for Cameron Parish thisyear.

The Sabine National WildlifeRefuge will be closed onWednesday for Christmas Dayand New Years Day, but willmake up these days on Dec. 26and Jan. 2, 2003 for hunting.

Recreational catches arehighest in Texas waters, fol-lowed by Florida, commercialcatches in the Gulf of Mexico,are the highest off of Louisianafollowed by Florida.

The Gulf of Mexico has much to offer its users: recreation, enjoyment, seafoodand a source of income for many. In something of a break-through for fishermen andboaters, the Louisiana StateLands Office has announcedthat the buck stops on their

desk in defining the legality of agate or other blockage on awaterway.

Baton Rouge bass anglerBarry Joffrion brought the issueto the attention of SandraThompson-Decoteau, Director ofthe Atchafalaya Basin program,who assigned it to the LivingResources Committee. Echoingthe concern of boaters through-out the state, Joffrion said heknew that some of the waterwayobstructions are legal becausethe waterways are on privateproperty. “But”, he said, “fisher-men have no way of knowingwhich are legal and whicharen’t, and they have no one tocall.”

In the past, boaters withquestions on gates and otherblockages were referred toparish district attorneys, whoare remote from the problemand don’t have staff to send intothe field. As a result, suspicionsand tempers about the issuehave been rising.

Clay Carter, speaking for theState Lands Office, said theboaters with questions shouldcontact him. If the blockage isdetermined to be illegal, theywill pursue removal with thenecessary parties. Captain McCain, of theBorealis Rex, which left thismorning on its regular run, hasbeen doing a considerable busi-ness in freight in cotton to LakeCharles from points in CameronParish recently. In speaking ofconditions in the parish from acotton standpoint, he said:

“As long as there is a boll ofcotton on the stalk cotton pick-ing will continue. The product isworth even money now and noneof it is wasted. It used to be thatafter a couple of pickings, whenthe cotton became a little scarcethey would plow it under or turnstock in the field, but it is worthso much money now that thefields are gone over again andagain, until every boll is gath-ered in.

“Every trip I get cotton atLeesburg, Grand Lake, Hack-berry and other landings. Someof these landings haven’tshipped cotton in any greatquantity for several years pastbut they are all doing businessthis year.

“This last rain,” he said, “didnot make any showing at all sofar, as the river is concerned itwould have to rain like that fora week or ten days to make theriver rise so that all danger ofsand bars would be eliminated.

“Ducks and geese are plenti-ful, but the hunting in CameronParish has not been very goodthis year on account of the lackof fresh water, the game is flyinghigh and refusing to light exceptin some of the rice fields wherethere is a little water. It is prac-tically all salty now, and afterthe birds get a hearty meal theyare on their way in search offresh water.

Business is good, bothfreight and passenger, and thereis no question but what it willget better.”

The Borealis Rex was visitedby a large number of personsyesterday, many of whom hadnever been on a boat before,which may seem rather strangeto Lake Charles people, but it is

not strange when it is consid-ered the large number ofstrangers who have come herefrom inland towns where theyhad never seen any water exceptsmall creeks.

Captain McCain kept openhouse and let the visitors wan-der at will about the boat. Anumber of these people camefrom towns in the Middle Westwhere they had landed in “aprairie schooner” and had livedon farms the best part of theirlives, and were seeing a realboat for the first time.

School Tarpons will travel toKentwood Friday seeking theirfirst State Class B champi-onship. Seven or eight charteredbus loads of fans, pep squad andband members will accompanythe team.

The Tarpons earned thestate playoff chance by beatingthe Hanson Tigers of Franklinhere Friday night. The gamewas won on penetrations, with 3for the Tarpons and 2 forHanson.

The game was tied in thescore 12-12 and on first downs,12-12, making the penetrationsthe deciding factor. (A penetra-tion is counted when a teamgoes beyond the 20 yard line.)

The game Friday probablywill be South Cameron’s lastshot at the state Class B titlesince the school is scheduled togo into Class A next year. Thiswill put the school back intocompetition with some of its oldfoes--Vinton, Iowa, Welsh andDeQuincy.

Five Tarpons made the 3-BAll-District Team. They are KyleHoward, end; Henry Dinger,back; Carlos Belanger, quarter-back; Mike Arrant, guard; andAlan Baker, tackle.

The Cameron Parish PoliceJury reduced the 1970 budget$40,000 below the budget forthis year and was praised by theparish treasurer for its “fiscal

responsibility.”The parish’s general fund

budget of $165,000 in anticipat-ed revenues and expenditures is$20,000 below the $185,000budget under which the juryoperated this year.

Treasurer Garner Nunezsaid that the jurors had spentabout six percent under theirroad and bridge budget thisyear, the second year in a rowthat the jury had stayed belowits budget.

and other buildings in lowerCameron due to dry weatherand grass fires are becomingmore serious, Cameron FireChief Ray Burleigh said thisweek

And on top of this, Burleighsaid, the Cameron FireDepartment will be unable tosend its big fire truck to fightgrass fires outside the Cameronfire district since the town’sother fire truck is being repairedand the town cannot be leftunprotected.

“We have always tried tohelp folks outside the fire dis-trict,” Burleigh said, “But withonly one fire truck in operationnow, we cannot endanger homesand businesses in the fire pro-tection district by sending thetruck outside the district.”

Burleigh said the fire depart-ment would send a portablepump and hose on a pickuptruck to outlying fires, but thatthis might be useless if thewater in nearby ditches haddried up.

residents of Cameron Parish andother interested persons willknow definitely just what will bedone regarding a proposed bridgeat the town of Cameron over theCalcasieu River to take the placeof the ferry now operating.

At a hearing held in the cour-thouse at Cameron Tuesdayafternoon by Capt. R. G. Lovett ofNew Orleans, district engineer,proposed plans were discussed,protests heard and many sugges-tions entertained. No action wastaken and no indication of thewar department’s recommenda-tion will be given until afterCaptain Lovett has made hisreport of the meeting.

Under the present plans, theUnited States government wouldbuild a $60,000 bridge over theriver at the present site of theferry or near it and change theferry to the new direct channelfrom Lake Charles to the Gulfnow being dredged and whichcreates an extra stream crossingon the Cameron highway.

There was considerable dis-cussion pro and con regarding thetype of structure and other mat-ters pertaining to it.

Captain Lovett and his partymade a survey before the meetingwas called to order and the sug-gestion first made was for a low-span bridge with a ten-foot clear-ance. Others believed a higherbridge with a 30 or 40-foot clear-ance would be better. One sug-gestion that no bridge be builtbut instead a dam across theriver be constructed met with dis-approval.

Benson Vincent, president ofthe Cameron Parish Police Jury,which several months ago gaveapproval to the proposed bridgeand ferry project, was present.Dave Dugas, member of theCalcasieu Parish Police Juryfrom Sulphur, also was there.

Parish Police Jury President,today urged residents of CameronParish to cooperate with repre-sentatives of Pyburn & Odom,Consulting Engineers, who havebeen employed by the CameronPolice Jury in a flood insurancestudy that is now in progress.

“For too long,” Mr. Henrydeclared, “residents of CameronParish have had their life’s sav-ings risked by the waters of theGulf of Mexico. A flood couldmean catastrophe as insuranceprotection was not available. Nowwe have joined the FederalGovernment to develop an effec-tive flood insurance program, forour people in Cameron.

pened on Grand Chenier around1912 or 1913. The main charac-ter was a three-year-old boy,Archie Hollister, my brother.

He had been playing in theback yard, where Aunt Dilce, theNegro woman was washing. Mymother was sewing at hermachine in the wide hall. Mygrandmother was in the kitchencooking dinner. Each of the threewomen thought that the childwas with one of the other two.Then in a startling moment eachrealized that she had not seenArchie for at least half an hour.

They searched the house andthe outbuildings. They calledrepeatedly, expecting to see amischievous little fellow springout of an overlooked corner.When their search proved fruit-less, Grandmother seized the bigox bell that was used to summonthe men from the fields in case ofan emergency. She rang it franti-cally.

Uncle Josh January, theNegro tenant on the place,appeared in a matter of seconds.“Miss Sue,” he gasped while run-ning towards her, “what in theworld happened?” “Our little boyis lost, Josh,” she replied trem-blingly. “We’ve looked every-where but can’t find him.”

Mother, tears streamingdown her cheeks, began a secondand a more thorough searchthrough all the buildings. UncleJosh painfully suggested that heshould look into the open irriga-tion well in the orange grove.That idea brought forth moreweeping, but the women fol-lowed him. bubbles appearedhere and there on the otherwisesmooth surface of the water.

Uncle Josh plunged in. Eachtime he scooped up a doublehandful from the bottom of thewell it turned out to be earth orsmall green oranges that hadfallen prematurely from thetrees. Josh waded out. “MissEffie,” he told mother, “don’t youworry. I’m gonna find your littleboy. He ain’t in that well. Iwaded and touched every inch ofit. Now don’t you fret. I’m gonnabring that little mite back toyou.”

So confident did Uncle Joshseem that the women felt reas-sured. At least, the child was notin the well. Then the man’s voicecame back to them from thefield, “I see his little footprints in

the soft dirt of the turnrow.”The women ran to the big

gate that opened into the field.They leaned against it, spentwith fear and anxiety. Theywaited for what seemed likehours. Then between wavingrows of cane and corn they sawbig, kind Uncle Josh racing upthe turnrow toward them.Seated astride his shoulders, lit-tle arms around the man’s head,sat Archie, a forlorn tyke.

“Oh, Mamma,” he cried, “Iwas so glad to see Uncle Josh. Istarted out to find Major. I keptgoing. Then I couldn’t see thehouse for the sugar cane. I gotlost and I still couldn’t findMajor.”

Major was a small colt givento Archie by Grandfather. Theday before the colt had died andhad been hauled off to thewoods. Archie, always wildabout pets, was brokenheartedbecause the men had takenMajor away. He felt that if hecould find Major all would be asbefore.

And there by the big fieldgate, the powerful hands ofUncle Josh lifted the small,tired boy and placed him in thearms of his young mother, whosetears were turned to joy.
