“Being diagnosed with a serious illness can be a frightening and disorientating time. No two patients are the same and at the Mary Ann Evans Hospice we work hard to ensure that we provide the support each and every individual and those closest to them need. Thatʼs probably why the Hospice is such a happy and positive place for everyone here. For me, as a Consultant in Palliative Medicine, working at the Mary Ann Evans, has given me the opportunity to be part of a fantastic team of staff and volunteers. Every day, I am privileged to learn about patients and their experiences and, as part of the multidisciplinary team, to provide the comfort and dignity we all deserve in our lives. I am excited about recent work at the Hospice to develop the clinical areas, to help us provide improved facilities to care. I now hold a weekly out- patients session at the Hospice. Patients are referred by Hospital Consultants, GPs, Macmillan Nurses and the Day Hospice Team. I also see patients in the George Eliot Hospital NHS Trust and in their own homes or care homes. Although looking after physical symptoms is part of my role in the Day Hospice there is much more that can be done to help. Healing is often less about healing of the body but healing of the spirit. Making a Difference continued

Message from Liz - Together We Care!

“The Mary Ann Evans Hospice is more than just a building; itʼs a place which extends beyond thewalls into patientsʼ homes through the Hospice at Home Team with a philosophy of careencompassed by everyone connected to the organisation. Hospice at Home is an essential part ofthe care provided by the Hospice giving the support to families and patients when they really needit; allowing the patient to stay at home because that is something which is important to many peoplewhen they are ill.

None of this is possible without the support provided by our army of volunteers and the generousdonations from you, our supporters.

We want to keep making a difference. Thank you for helping!”

Dr. Julia Grant, Consultant in Palliative Medicine

“I am delighted, and indeed honoured, to havebeen appointed as the next Chairman of theBoard of Directors of the Mary Ann EvansHospice.

Following in the footsteps of Canon EdwardPogmore who has been the HospiceChairman for 15 years will be a very significantchallenge, but a challenge nevertheless that Iam very much looking forward to.

I have worked within healthcare in NorthWarwickshire for almost 30 years and recentlyretired as the Chief Operating Officer at the George Eliot Hospital. I hope to be able to bringsome of that experience to the benefit of the Mary Ann Evans Hospice.

2011 is the 20th Anniversary of the Hospice and during that time the services delivered forthe benefit of the local population have developed tremendously.

We welcome your support again in what will be a very special year for LOCAL Hospice care.

The Hospice has the most wonderfully dedicated staff and volunteers and I look forward toworking with them and the other Board members over the next few years to develop serviceseven further.

Together and with the support of the people of North Warwickshire we will provide a Hospiceservice unrivalled in the country.”

“I don’t live with a terminal illness,it lives with me”

Birmingham University Graphic Art Student Hannah Liggins first ʻdiscoveredʼ the Hospicewhen her Nan was a patient.

“My Nan Iris was a patient about 10 years ago, she really loved the creative work in theActivity Room.

As part of my 2nd year course work I needed to create an alternative exhibition that hadthe scope to be put into production. I spent many sessions both observing and workingwith different patients during Art Therapy. I spent time in particular with MND patient Suewho had previously been my Lecturer at North Warwickshire & Hinckley College. Themore time I spent working with the patients the more inspired I became. Sueʼs illnessmeans she has limited mobility, but she was so involved with the final outcome. Thebooklet which I produced demonstrates a lighter and very positive aspect of the Hospice, where patients can find relief and happiness through art.”

Our congratulations to Hannah on gaining a ʻFirstʼ with her project and thank you to Suefor working with Hannah.

Many charities have expressed concerns that anincrease in reports of clothing collection scams willreduce the communityʼs willingness to donate items tocharity. These are commercial collectors who collectand sell clothes as a business. There has also beenbogus charity collectors in the area.

Shirley Kent Nuneaton Shop Manager said, “As acharity we do not drop bags for filling, but we doappreciate donations of good quality items at any of our4 Hospice shops. We are reliant on the support of localpeople to ensure we raise sufficient funds to continueproviding local hospice care.”

Budding Fashion Designer Samantha Bradley was challenged aspart of her final Art & Design A Level exam to ʻthink outside the boxʼto create stylish clothes. Samantha found the perfect materials in theHospice shop in the form of curtains and sheets and set to workcreating her masterpieces which were then modelled for her by herfriends. What an example we could all follow. If you have a goodrecycling story, please let us know.

Thank you to all the volunteers who give their time.
