MARWOOD CREAM TEAS - END OF AN ERA Unfortunately nobody has come forward to take up the posts of Secretary or Treasurer for our charity 'The Friends of Marwood Parish', or to take on the task of Teas Organiser. This has resulted in the charity closing down. It also means Marwood Cream Teas will no longer exist.

Over the years teas have been served, many thousands of pounds have been raised for Marwood Church and considerable donations made to other local charities. Without the help of all the volunteers who have given their support this would not have been possible. Sincere thanks to all who have been involved.

and work together.

Marwood Men’s Breakfast

The first men’s breakfast at the Church Hall took place on Saturday 10th November, hosted by Marwood Men's Fellowship Group. You might think it’s quite easy to knock up a few fried breakfasts, but with 28 hungry blokes turning up at 8.30am, this presented quite a challenge! In fact the day started at 5.30am for Tony Liddon, preparing bacon, sausages, mushrooms and much more! This was not one rasher, one sausage and a few baked beans … but serious platefuls of food, followed by seconds! There was a short talk by Shaun Harvey from Grosvenor Church, founder of the charity ‘African Pearls’ who was travelling out to Uganda. Roger Bartlett also gave a short talk about his fact-finding tour in China, where he is meeting with various charities. Both Shaun and Roger set off for their respective destinations the following Monday 12th November. The Reverend Iain Robertson gave a talk, and then chaired a thought-provoking and lively discussion. The event was a great success and was well attended, so the group plan to hold another session in the New Year. MARY’S THEATRICAL PERFORMANCE! On November 2nd Mary Straw of Prixford attended our North Devon Hospital for an operation. A very supportive gentleman escorted her into the theatre. Mary, petrified, was wearing a pink fluffy dressing gown. They both stepped elegantly around the theatre and their performance would have gained 10 out of 10 from the Strictly Come Dancing judges. They performed in front of a highly skilled team headed by two handsome tall young men – Consultant John Taylor and Anaesthetist Tony Haycock. Mary “leapt” onto the operating table where their skilled hands began work. Some time later they produced – not a 9lb bouncing baby boy but a stone; not a diamond, not an emerald, not a ruby, but a dirty brown, crinkly rock, the size of a pigeon’s egg (circa 1923-2012!)

After the operation, Mary was taken to the George V ward and later to the cosy Capener ward, into the care of the hardworking staff. As the operation was keyhole surgery she wasn’t there long and was taken home the next day. Meynell – Mary’s husband was then doing all the washing, cooking and hoovering after nearly 70 years of practice (Mary feels he needs more practice).

Mary hopes this report will reach her grandson, Peter Evans, who is now a blooming Pommie in Sydney, Australia. He has been working hard at a world known Oxygen Company (Mary was glad of that) and also working too hard romancing the Australian Sheilas (Mary was worried about that). He has now settled down with his lovely Tamara (Mary is pleased about that).

We take this opportunity to wish them all out there – a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Good luck to Marwood Matters on the Web!

Cllr Spear commented that the drains in Milltown on the B3230 have still not been cleared in spite of several requests to DCC. He said this part of the road is subject to flooding due to the blocked drains and will cause serious problems if it freezes. Cllr Latham will contact DCC again. Cllr May attended a Community Hall Management Committee meeting on 6 November and said there is still a problem regarding the use/ownership of the access lane to the school; it would appear that it is unregistered. He said there is still a lot of work to be done and a request has been made to the CIC for grant. Rural Alliance: the Council agreed to pay up to £20 for the church hall for a meeting of the Alliance next year. TAP Fund: The Clerk explained the proposed joint-project with four other Parishes for the clearing of weeds and gullies along certain roads. The Fund, from DCC/NDC provides £1.10 per elector.
