Spend Local

How wonderful it is to see so many new businesses

in Martinsville. Please don’t forget to

patronize the new businesses as well as the

long established businesses.

It was wonderful to see the community come together in an effort to

save L&M Grocery recently.

Did you know that for every dollar spent at a

small business, 32 cents leaves the local economy. But, when you spend that

same dollar at a chain store, 57 cents leaves. That is more than 50

percent of the dollar that ceases to impact the area you spent it in. The local economic impact is $179

for every square foot occupied by and

independent local business. A chain store's local impact is $105 per

square foot. That means locally owned and

operated businesses have a greater tie to their communities so they

positively affect economic growth, employment and

income to a greater degree.

City of Martinsville Gas Department

217-382-4323 www.martinsvilleilcity.com The Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration has issued a new regulation that requires The City of Martinsville to offer an Excess Flow Valve (EFV) to it’s customers. An excess Flow Valve (EFV) is an extra safety device that can be installed in a service line providing natural gas to the meter. The main purpose of an EFV is to reduce the risk of a release of natural gas caused by excavation damage to the service line between the point of connection to the main and the gas meter. An EFV will not prevent or stop a leak that might occur downstream of the meter. Not every service can accommodate an EFV. The installation of an EFV is not a requirement for existing natural gas service lines, however, at the request of a City of Martinsville gas customer one my be installed. The installation of an EFV would take one day and would require the excavation of the service line at the connection to the main line. If you would like an EFV installed on your line, the cost you must pay is $750.00. This includes labor, equipment and materials but does not include restoration of grounds disturbed by excavation. It is not likely but possible the future maintenance or replacement of the EFV might be necessary and could result in additional charges. If you would like to have an EFV installed or have any questions, please call City Hall at 217-382-4323.

Memorial Funds

The library has received several donations in memory of friends and family over the last two months. So

many that we weren’t able to purchase all of the books in memory of those who have passed. Be sure to check the back page for the ones we have purchased this far. There

will be more listed in the next newsletter as well.

Magazine Rack

The library was able to purchase a new magazine rack in memory of

Dale Miller. It should be installed in March. Stop in and check out this

wonderful new addition.

MARTINSVILLE PUBLIC LIBRARY DISTRICT

Martinsville Messenger Plant Program

Will it be a Pinterest fail or a Pinterest win? Join us as we start some seeds for your garden indoors. There are three different ways, discovered on Pinterest, for everyone to try. We are hoping for three wins! Join us March 16th at 5:00 pm and see how it goes and have a fun time doing it!

Hop into Spring

The Easter Bunny will be hopping into the library on March 18th from 10:00 am—11:30 am. Stop by, grab a treat, have your picture taken with the Bunny and make a craft to take home.

Reading with Ms. JoAnn Only two more opportunities remain to bring your little one to the library for some fun with Ms. JoAnn this school year. She will be reading, playing a game and making crafts at 11:30 am March 16th and April 20th. This is a great opportunity to introduce your small children to the library and all the fun inside it’s walls!

Candidate Forum

Martinsville on the Move Education Committee will be hosting a candidate forum on Thursday, March 23rd in the Martinsville High School Gym. The forum will begin at 6:00 pm with school board candidates followed by mayoral candidates at 7:00 pm.

What is a candidate forum? Each candidate has been given a list of questions to answer at the forum. If you have a question for a candidate, please submit them via email to [email protected] or in person at the Martinsville Public library by March 16th. Plan to attend and learn what each candidate has to offer so you can make an informed decision on Election Day!

PTO Quarter Auction

The Martinsville Elementary School PTO is sponsoring a Quarter Auction

on Saturday, April 8th at the Elementary Gym. The auction starts at 10:30 am with the doors opening at 9:30 am. Paddles will be offered

for $5.00. Come and bring your quarters to help raise money for the PTO. There will be many wonderful items to bid on, a 50/50 raffle, door
