Spend Local
How wonderful it is to see so many new businesses
in Martinsville. Please don’t forget to
patronize the new businesses as well as the
long established businesses.
It was wonderful to see the community come together in an effort to
save L&M Grocery recently.
Did you know that for every dollar spent at a
small business, 32 cents leaves the local economy. But, when you spend that
same dollar at a chain store, 57 cents leaves. That is more than 50
percent of the dollar that ceases to impact the area you spent it in. The local economic impact is $179
for every square foot occupied by and
independent local business. A chain store's local impact is $105 per
square foot. That means locally owned and
operated businesses have a greater tie to their communities so they
positively affect economic growth, employment and
income to a greater degree.

Recycling Center
Recycling is the simplest action that YOU can take to create a sustainable earth. Did you know that YOU can recycle in Martinsville? Republic Services offers recycling pick up in Martinsville. They take all recyclables together to a transfer station in Terre Haute, and from there they get sent to Indianapolis for sorting. You can take your recyclables to the dumpster located at the top of the drive at the Waste Water Treatment Plant on South York Street, Monday through Friday 8:00 am to 3:30 pm. Here are the items that they accept: cardboard (flatten when possible- no wax coating), newspapers, magazines, phone books, mixed paper, plastic containers (#1-7 like milk jugs, juice jugs, soda bottles, laundry detergent bottles, shampoo bottles, etc., but no motor oil bottles), aluminum beverage cans and steel food cans. THIS LOCATION DOES NOT ACCEPT GLASS. Please rinse out all your recyclables before you bring them. They don't need to be separated; you can bring them all in one bag. Chamber of Commerce
The chamber is looking for a civic minded individual with a desire to promote local business. If you are interested in being on the board, please contact Leon Goble or Sheila Cribelar.
City of Martinsville Gas Department
217-382-4323 www.martinsvilleilcity.com The Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration has issued a new regulation that requires The City of Martinsville to offer an Excess Flow Valve (EFV) to it’s customers. An excess Flow Valve (EFV) is an extra safety device that can be installed in a service line providing natural gas to the meter. The main purpose of an EFV is to reduce the risk of a release of natural gas caused by excavation damage to the service line between the point of connection to the main and the gas meter. An EFV will not prevent or stop a leak that might occur downstream of the meter. Not every service can accommodate an EFV. The installation of an EFV is not a requirement for existing natural gas service lines, however, at the request of a City of Martinsville gas customer one my be installed. The installation of an EFV would take one day and would require the excavation of the service line at the connection to the main line. If you would like an EFV installed on your line, the cost you must pay is $750.00. This includes labor, equipment and materials but does not include restoration of grounds disturbed by excavation. It is not likely but possible the future maintenance or replacement of the EFV might be necessary and could result in additional charges. If you would like to have an EFV installed or have any questions, please call City Hall at 217-382-4323.
