“WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO SHARE GOOD NEWS TO OTHERS”

To share the good news to others is a sign of magnanimity, nobility of heart, compassion and love of our fellow men. And the good news is: The first Christians, the Disciples experienced the presence of the risen Lord as real. How did It happened? When Simon Peter found Jesus the risen Lord, it changed those frightened Apostles to people who were convinced that Jesus was alive. The enthusiasm that those early Christian felt, the whole atmosphere of faith they lived in. When Peter and John were fishing, they found Jesus on the shore as a bystander. They were glad to recognize the Lord Jesus after they were overwhelmed by catch-less cast and empty fishing nets. The community of believers was of one heart—and one mind. Today, where can we find Jesus? We can find the risen Christ in the Holy Eucharist—granted, dispensed and fed by our beloved Priest and Pastor. The two disciples, Peter and Thomas, to whom the risen Lord appeared on the road to Emmaus told the others to share the good news that they had come and recognize Jesus in the Breaking of the Bread—one of the earliest terms for what we do at the Lord’s table. Transplanted in the beating heart of Christianity is the Holy Eucharist, the sacrament of absolute simplicity that taking, bless-ing, breaking and giving of the bread; the blessing and giving of a cup of wine as these were first done on their new meaning for a 33-year old Jew on the night before He gave His life—for us. He told His disciples to do this with the new meaning for the recalling of Him. They have always done it since. We are cele-brating a Eucharist—a welcomed good news—that we share with other Christians. We are giving thanks for the presence of the risen Lord in our lives. We are not simply fulfilling an obligation or to hear our Pastor’s preaching—or even to receive our own communion.

WORSHIP

To facilitate a transforming

encounter with God as we come together

in worship.

DISCIPLESHIP

To empower a community of Christian people walking together as disciples of Jesus in

order to share His good news.

STEWARDSHIP

To create a culture in the parish rooted

in gratitude and generosity.

HOSPITALITY

To form a joyful family community that reaches

out and receives one another as

Christ reaches out and receives us.

FACILITIES

To assure that our Church and facilities testify to the greater

honor and glory of God.

We celebrate Eucharist to hear the Word of life, to receive the bread of life, and especially to join ourselves to the risen Christ—to share the good news to others. Because when we share this Holy Eucharist, we are free, alive, and we are more of a Christian community. We have the Lord Jesus, Son of God inside us—in our heart, mind, and spirit. It’s our life. We see and touch like a witness as much as those frightened, bewil-dered, skeptical disciples Jesus appeared after His resurrection. The disciples dramatically changed their feeling and perception. We have been changed through the lives of Christians who have touched us and passed their faith down to us. We have to expe-rience resurrection in our lives. We have to know and act like we really believe that Jesus loves us despite our imperfections—that we are saved and loved. We share the good news of believing in the risen Christ. Today, the whole world needs the Lord’s message more than ever. We need to search for the Lord in our midst—and at His table—at the altar of God. The Passion of St. John says, “Only one disciple, John was present and stood grieving under the cross with Jesus; they were, Mary, His mother’s sister, the wife of Clopas, Mary Magdalene and John—four. Where were the rest? They were hiding in the upper room fearing for their lives. The Gospel tells us that the disciples experienced Jesus—touched Him for real. The experience of the risen Christ changed those frightened disciples and were convinced that Jesus was alive. This is the good news! We have to share this good news to others with enthusiasm. Inside the locked upper room, Jesus came in and greeted them, “Peace be with you.” And, in His final words, Jesus told His disciples, "Feed my lambs.” Again, He continued, “Tend my sheep.” And, follow Me.” (John 21: 1-19). He remains among us today, even though He ascended into Heaven. Now, you are the body of Christ, member for member. (1 Cor. 12-27). He shares with us and others the good news. When He said, “I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, he bears much fruits; for without Me you can do nothing.” (John15: 5). “I will praise you Lord for you have rescued me.” (Psalm 30: 2,4,5-6, 11-12, 13). Peace be with you and may God bless you all. --- C.C. Salonga

Following the Easter Sunday 8:30 AM Mass, Father Anthony received a check for $4,000 from the Martinez Council of the Knights of Columbus. The check was presented by current Grand Knight Rik Silva, left, and past Grand Knight Tim McLoughlin, right. This check was made possible by the hard work of the Knight of Columbus council and the generosity of parishioners & Martinez residents that came to events in the past year.

Common wisdom says everything we need to know about life, we heard in kindergarten. Basic principles like being kind to everyone, sharing what we have, including with the new kid, saying please and thank you—these don’t lose their value as we and the kids around us get older. In a similar way, the demands of discipleship don’t change the longer we travel the road with Jesus. The first thing Jesus says to newcomers is “follow me.” One of the last conversations the Risen Lord has with Peter includes the words “follow me.” To get where Jesus is going, keep following. Today's readings: Acts 5:27-32, 40b-41; Revelation 5:11-14; John 21:1-19 (48). “And when Jesus had said this, He said to Peter, ‘Follow Me.’ ”

The great thing about the gospel stories is that they show the all-too-human way in which folks scurry after Jesus in the wake of a really big miracle like his multiplying of the loaves and fishes or walking on water. In doing so they hold a mirror up to us. Sure, we care about his message, but most of us also like having a friend in high places to answer our calls! Here’s the thing, though: Jesus isn’t looking for a fan club or stardom; He wants us to pay attention to His gospel and respond to His call. He wants us to get to work, not wait for a show. Are we ready to take the stage ourselves and play a role? Today's readings: Acts 6:8-15; John 6:22-29 (273). “When the crowd saw that neither Jesus nor His disciples were there, they . . . came to Capernaum looking for Jesus.”

Early in the 20th century quantum physicists discovered a mys-terious phenomenon they called the “disturbing observer.” They had learned that merely observing a quantum particle changes it in unpredictable ways. As a result, scientists have had to develop elaborate methods for their experiments to com-pensate for the changes their observations cause. What is true at the quantum level of reality holds true at the visible level as well, only the effects are much more subtle. In other words, your attitude toward a person or event has an unpredictable effect on what you perceive. Today, be aware that what you observe is partly of your own making. Are you judging or loving? Today's readings: Acts 7:51-8:1a; John 6:30-35 (274). “What sign can you do, that we may see and believe in you?”

Living a brief, obscure life has never been a barrier to saint-hood. Such was the destiny of today’s memorial saint: Blessed Teresa Demjanovich, born in Bayonne, New Jersey in 1901. She earned a college degree (unusual for women then) and soon after became a nun. Two years later, at age 27, she died of complications following a surgery. Today scholars recognize that she latched onto the idea of the universal call to holiness decades before the church emphasized the concept in Vatican II. Do you prefer holiness that is spectacular? If so, challenge yourself to also seek faithfulness in the hidden corners, as did Blessed Teresa. Today's readings: Acts 8:1b-8; John 6:35-40 (275). “For this is the will of my Father, that everyone who sees the Son and believes in Him may have eternal life.”

Often in life you can use a mentor: someone wiser and more experienced to show you the ropes. A couple married longer than you knows a little something about getting past the rough spots. A retired colleague can share a few tricks about problem-solving at the office. In a story from the Acts of the Apostles, an Ethiopian eunuch was clearly on a faith journey: not a Jew, yet traveling to Jerusalem to worship and read Hebrew prophe-cy. He’d done all the prep work for faith: walking the walk, do-ing his homework. Now all he needed was a guide. Cue Philip. As the saying goes: “The teacher appears when the student is ready.” Need a mentor? Prepare to receive one! Today's readings: Acts 8:26-40; John 6:44-51 (276). “He replied, ‘How can I, unless someone instructs me?’ ”

How far would you go for God? Father Damien de Veuster went all the way from his native Belgium to minister in Hawaii. He went all the way to the margins of society to care for the bodies and souls of lepers in a quarantined colony there. He went all the way to living in solidarity with them—tending their wounds and eating with them from his hands—and contracted leprosy himself. When he died in 1889, news of his death went all the way around the world via telegraph and steamship. Be inspired by this saint to take the next steps in your service to the mission of Christ. Today's readings: Acts 9:1-20; John 6:52-59 (277). “Whoever eats My Flesh and drinks my Blood has eternal life.”

“The Christian ideal has not been tried and found wanting; it has been found difficult and left untried,” wrote British author G.K. Chesterton. The gospel teachings are indeed challenging; they go against the grain, especially in a culture that encourages us to focus on a different “trinity”—the self-absorbed trinity of Me, Myself, and I. Jesus challenged us to look beyond our own needs (which God is fully aware of in any case) and respond to the needs of those around us. Many walked the other way when they heard this message. But others stayed. Will you stay or will you go? Today's readings: Acts 9:31-42; John 6:60-69 (278). “Many of Jesus’ disciples who were listening said, ‘This saying is hard; who can accept it?’ ”

We call this “Good Shepherd Sunday,” but these days you don’t see many shepherds in this part of the world, at least not the kind scripture is talking about. But it can still help to think about good shepherds, even if you don’t see any of them tend-ing sheep in your neighborhood. The key is twofold: knowing who is in your care and having those in your care know and believe in you, and laying down your life for them. Sacrifice for others and mutual trust: It’s how our relationship with God works, and these values are the ones you can cultivate when people look to you to lead. Today's readings: Acts 13:14, 43-52; Revelation 7:9, 14b-17; John 10:27-30 (51). “I have made you a light to the Gentiles . . . to the ends of the earth.”

Lecturas de hoy: Hechos 8: I b-8; Juan 6: 35-40 (275).

. . hasta los confines de la tierra.”
