2.1 About this Installation sManual

This installation manual applies exclusively to the product described herein and is aimed at those individuals who install dasthis product, put it into operation and monitor its use.

2.2 Appropriate Use

The MARTIN® XHD QC™ #1 primary cleaner is only used for clean-ing conveyor belts. It can be used on conveyor belts with a width of up to 3,000 mm and a belt speed of up to 6 m/s. The primary cleaner can only be used directly on the head drum.

Any other use of this product is deemed to be inappropriate. If you wish to use the product for any other purpose, please contact Martin Engineering Customer Service. We will be happy to assist you with product configuration.

2.2.1 Conveyor belt systems with open transfer systems

This installation manual describes the installation on a conveyor belt system with an encapsulated delivery system. For the installation on open delivery systems different MARTIN® installation consoles can be used.

If installation conditions prove to be difficult, as is the case with im-passable static components, or using the head drum as the tension point, Martin Engineering or a representative can help with the posi-tioning or find customised solutions.

2.2.2 Use in EX-protection areas

Under certain circumstances, this product can also be used in po-tentially explosive areas. Contact Martin Engineering for more infor-mation on use in potentially explosive areas.

The use of the cleaner in a device protection category that is higher than that specified or under operating conditions other than those specified by Martin Engineering is not permissible or may be done only if Martin Engineering has granted its approval.

2.2.3 Operating limits of this product

The use of the product mentioned here is allowed only within the specified specifications. Using it in a higher than specified equip-ment category or under operating conditions other than those named and previously specified by Martin Engineering is considered to be inappropriate use and can only be carried out if approved by Martin Engineering.

If the product mentioned here is to be used for a different purpose, then Martin Engineering or a representative can help with the prod-uct configuration.

2.3 Safety in the Workplace

2.3.1 Safety instructions, safety in the workplace

This installation manual must be read through in full prior to com-mencing work on the product or the customer's conveyor belt.

The operator must ensure that all installation, inspections, and main-tenance tasks are carried out exclusively by authorised experts.

All work on conveyor belts and their accessories must always be carried out only when the system is at a standstill. It is essential that the procedures described in the respective installation manual, -which explain how to shut-down the conveyor system are followed.

Upon completion of work, all safety equipment and protective guards must be reinstalled and put back into operation.

Prior to commissioning, installation must be completed. Before the conveyor belt can be put back into operation, the flawless execution of all steps should be checked and verified. All notes on installation and commissioning of the product should be observed.

2.3.2 Obligations of the operator

The operator of this product must ensure that the personnel entrust-ed with the installation, maintenance and use of this product are only those personnel who

• are fully aware of regulations governing safety at work and accident prevention,

• are instructed in the use of the product and have read and understood this installation manual in full.

2.3.3 Authorised personnel

Personnel are considered to be authorised when they have complet-ed the necessary training, hold the technical experience, knowledge of the relevant standards and directives and are also in a position to assess any task in order to recognise a critical situation in a timely fashion and at an early stage.

Operational, Maintenance and Installation Personnel

Personnel are considered to be authorised if they have been in-structed in the use of the product and have read and understood this installation manual in full.

3 Product Description

3.1 Design and Function

The XHD QC™ #1 belt cleaner (VHD = eXtra Heavy Duty) is de-signed for extremely heavy-duty applications; it can be used on con-veyor belts with a width of up to 3000 mm and a belt speed of up to 6 m/sec. Placing the installation position of the primary cleaner at the head drum and the primary cleaner (e.g. QC™ #2) just after the head drum ensures that scraped-off material is again added to the material flow.

The pre-cleaner and the primary cleaner can be used individually, but for optimum cleaning results it is recommended to install a com-bined system of pre- and primary cleaners.XXX

3.2 Tensioners

The MARTIN® XHD QC™ #1 belt cleaner and the Martin Engineering tensioners, specifically developed for it, provide the best results and conform to the general state-of-the-art technology.

Martin Engineering recommends the following tensioners for the MARTIN® XHD QC™ #1 belt cleaner:

• MARTIN® XHD Spring Tensioner (with rubber dampers), part no. 38003+E

• MARTIN® XHD Turnbuckle Spring Tensioner, part no. 35978+E

• MARTIN® XHD Air Tensioner, Part no. 32135+E

NOTE

A product that has not been installed properly or correctly may dis-rupt the conveyance process and contaminate the bulk material tobe transported.The operator is therefore responsible for implementing the neces-sary counter measures.When using with contaminants Martin Engineering or a represent-ative can help with the positioning or customized solutions.

3.3 Type explanation

Cleaner blades for the XHD QC™ #1 primary cleaner are available in different materials. The required material can be selected to match the respective material conditions. The selection of different materials for blades is listed in the section on ‘Part numbers’.

4 Installation Preparation

4.1 Prior to Installation

4.1.1 Materials and tools required

In addition to the standard tools, the following special instruments may be needed for the installation and maintenance of the product.

• Lifting device with a capacity greater than the weight of the coneveyor belt cleaner (note the weight on the delivery note).

4.1.2 Preparatory measures

1. Check the delivery with respect to the following:

• Is the delivery complete? Is the number of pallets/cases/containers the same as the number on the delivery note?

• Does all the transport packaging appear to be undamaged? Is there damage which may indicate that the contained products may be damaged?

2. If the delivery is incomplete or there is any transit damage, make sure that this is documented and have the freight forward-er confirm the same. All damaged products should be saved for inspection.

NOTE

Pay attention to the following checks and carry them out carefullyand completely.The freight forwarder is responsible for any transport damage! For any damage claims, please contact the freight forwarder.

NOTE

3. Depending on the scope of the order, the delivery should con-tain the following parts:

• MARTIN® XHD QC™ #1 primary cleaner,

• any accessories as ordered,

• Two warning labels for conveyor belt products Part no. 23395G

4. Missing or damaged parts must be reported to Martin Engineer-ing or the authorised dealer.

5 Installation

5.1 Safety instructions

NOTE

Read this section thoroughly prior to commencing any work.

WARNING! DANGER OF INJURY!

Body parts and/or clothing may get caught and pulled in by rotat-ing parts or by the moving conveyor belt.Before any installation or maintenance work is carried out, ensurethat all power sources to the conveyor belt system and its acces-sories are switched off and secured against inadvertent switching-on. Use warning signs!

WARNING! EXPLOSION HAZARD!

In enclosed areas there is an increased risk of explosion whenusing a cutting torch or welding equipment!Before use, check the level of gas and dust in the air.

5.2 Installation procedure

5.2.1 Determining the installation position

Determining the position of the mainframe and the tensioner of the MARTIN® QC™ #1 primary cleaner must be done on both sides of the chute wall. In the process, those positions are determined where the mainframe of the MARTIN® XHD QC™ #1 primary cleaner pass-es through the chute wall or where the tensioner is installed on the chute wall.

The MARTIN® XHD QC™ #1 primary cleaner is operated along with a tensioner. This is disassembled at the factory before delivery and is reassembled during the installation along with the primary clean-er.

The installation of the MARTIN® XHD QC™ #1 primary cleaner and the spring tensioner is described in this manual and the installation manual of the tensioner.

There follows an overview of the installation steps:

There may be different local conditions that require different working steps, which are shown below:

Installation on an encapsulated delivery system

• Carry out the instructions given in section 5.2.2 onwards.

Installation on an encapsulated delivery system with existing instal-lation openings and brackets for belt cleaners.

• Carry out the instructions given in section 5.2.3 onwards.

Installation on an open delivery system

• Use the local resources to ensure that the dimensions for the installation are correctly maintained.

1. Before starting with the work of installing the conveyor belt sys-tem, switch off all accessories and secure them against being switched on again inadvertently.

2. Determine the midpoint position of the mainframe as described below for the primary cleaner.

3. Mark the vertical and horizontal centre line of the driving drum on the operator side of the chute wall to determine the midpoint (1, Fig.1) of the driving drum. The vertical line must run at right angles to the conveyor line.

NOTE

The MARTIN® XHD QC™ #1 primary cleaner is installed only in thefront lower quarter of a head pulley. The specified installationmeasurements must be strictly observed.

4. Determine or measure the radius (measurement A) of the driv-ing drum including the thickness of the covering and the con-veyor belt.

5. Add measurement X from table 2 to measurement A. 6. On the chute wall, mark a circular arc around the midpoint with

the measurement determined in step 5 (1, Fig.1).

7. Mark a horizontal line below the horizontal centre line of the head drum at a distance of 355 mm. The intersection with the arc marked in step 5 is the midpoint of the mainframe (3, Fig.2).

The primary cleaner is heavy and can cause serious injury if it fallswhen being lifted or moved.Only lift the secondary cleaner using suitable lifting device or withseveral persons. Do not stand under suspended loads.

8. Repeat steps 1 to 7 on the opposite side of the chute wall.

5.2.2 Installing the tensioner

Observe the respective instructions on installing the tensioner in the respective operating manual of the tensioner used. (See Chapter 2.1.4).

5.2.3 Installing the primary cleaner

1. First remove the scraper blade from the mainframe as de-scribed below:

• Open the safety clip (1, Fig.3) and pull it out for this purpose.

• Then pull out the cleaner blade (2, Fig.3) from the spring dowel sleeve (3, Fig.3).

2. Remove the two spring tensioners from the mounting plates.

NOTE

This is the best possible installation position recommended byMartin Engineering for the MARTIN® XHD QC™ #1 primary cleanerto achieve optimum cleaning results. Should this not be possiblefor structural reasons, the primary cleaner can, in consultation withMartin Engineering, also be installed at an angle of 20° above orbelow, but the installation radius must be adhered to in everycase.

3. Slide one spring bushing of the spring tensioner each on both sides onto the mainframe. Slide the spring bushing with the shaft into the mounting plates

4. Slide one side of the primary leaner shaft through the mounting plate on the opposite side.

5. Then slide the other end into the mounting plate on the operator side.

6. Slide the scraper blade on the shaft into the coiled spring pin. 7. Secure the scraper blade with the safety clip.

5.2.4 Centre the primary cleaner axis below the conveyor belt

Measure on both sides the distance (A) to (B) between the edge of the cleaning elements and the conveyor belt edge.

Slide the cleaner until distance A is equal to distance B. The convey-or belt should protrude about 50 to 100 mm on both the left and the right sides. The scraper blade must be positioned in the centre be-low the conveyor belt.

5.2.5 Adjust the primary cleaner parallel to the conveyor belt

Measure the distance on both sides between the scraper blade and the head drum. To do this, place the scraper blade against the con-veyor belt. The measurements on both sides must be equal.

5.2.6 Levelling the primary cleaner

Level the primary cleaner shaft to the head drum or check that the scraper blade is positioned evenly against the conveyor belt.

Once all the measurements are correct and the primary cleaner is adjusted it can then be fixed in position; if not, it should be reinstalled or re-positioned.

5.2.7 Install locking sleeve

In case of a spring tensioner being only installed on one side, a lock-ing sleeve is installed on the opposite side of the chute wall so that the primary cleaner cannot move sideways.

1. Slide the stop sleeve (1,Fig.8) over the mainframe tube (2, Fig.8) of the primary cleaner on the far side of the chute wall.

2. Slide the stop sleeve (1, Fig.8) until it lies against the rubber bushing (3, Fig.8).

3. Tighten the clamp screws (4, Fig.8).

5.2.8 Tensioning the primary cleaner blade

Observe the instructions on installing the tensioner in the respective installation manual of the tensioner being used.

CAUTION! DANGER OF DAMAGE!

Damage may occur if the tension of the conveyor belt cleaner onthe conveyor belt is too high or uneven.Only tension the conveyor belt scraper according to the guidelinesand with dual spring tensioners, ensure even tension.

5.3 Probelauf

1. Remove all tools and fire protection covers from the installation area and conveyor belt.

2. Carry a one hour test run of the conveyor belt system.

3. After the test run for an hour, shut down the conveyor belt sys-tem, switch off the power supply and secure it against being switched on inadvertently.

4. Make sure that all securing parts are tightened. Tighten loose connections.

NOTE

Read through this section thoroughly before starting any work onthe belt cleaner or the customer's conveyor belt.

CAUTION! FLYING PARTS!

5. Check the belt cleaner for the following points:

• Wear and tear: a little wear and tear is normal, as soon as the cleaner blades have got adjusted to the contour of the conveyor belt, this stops happening.

• Bulk material accumulation: No bulk material should get accumulated between the cleaner blades and the return side.

6. If the wear and tear or bulk material accumulation is excessive or other problems occur, refer to the information in section 5.4 „Installation Check-list“ or section 7 „Troubleshooting“.

5.4 Installation - Check-list

If the test run of the secondary cleaner was not as expected, then the „Installation Check-list“ table could help to find and solve the problem. If other problems persist, refer to and follow section 7 „Troubleshooting“.:

Installation - Check-list

The primary cleaner should be installed on both sides according to the measurements in section 5.2 onwards.

The primary cleaner is installed in the correct position and all critical installation measurements are adhered to.

The blades must be installed in the centre of the conveyor belt and/or head pulley.

6 Maintenance

6.1 Safety instructions

6.2 Weekly maintenance

1. Switch off the power supply of the conveyor belt and any other equipment and secure these against being switched on inad-vertently.

2. Remove all material deposits from the cleaner blade and the mainframe.

3. Check that all securing parts are tightened. Tighten any loose connections as required.

4. Check the tension of the cleaner and tighten it if necessary. 5. Check if the cleaner blades are worn out, damaged or parts are

missing.

NOTE

Maintenance inspections should take place at least once a week.Depending on operational conditions, shorter maintenance inter-vals may be necessary.

6. If the cleaner blades are worn out, replace the blade according to the instructions in chapter 6.3.

7. Clean all warning labels. Replace any warning labels which are illegible. Warning labels may be purchased from Martin Engi-neering or an authorised dealer.

8. Remove all tools from the working area. 9. Switch on the conveyor belt.

NOTE

If there are any signs of a malfunction, turn off the relevant parts ofthe conveyor belt. To receive support, contact Martin Engineeringor a representative. DO NOT operate the conveyor belt systemuntil the reason for the problem is known and a solution is found.

10. Monitor the cleaner and test its cleaning performance.

6.3 Replacing the cleaner blades

1. Release the spring tensioners according to the specifications of the relevant instruction manual.

2. Loosen the locking screws (1, Fig.10) on the spring tensioner and the locking sleeve.

3. The spring tensioner may have to be removed entirely.

4. Fold the scraper forward. 5. Remove the safety clip (3, Fig.10). 6. Remove the scraper blade (2, Fig.10) by pulling the entire blade

toward the operator side (with light hammer blows if neces-sary).

7. Install the new blade in reversed order. 8. Place the scrapers against the drum head again. 9. If the spring tensioner was dismantled, reinstall it as described

in the operating manual for the spring tensioner. 10. Loosen the locking screws (1, Fig.10) on the spring tensioner

and fix the locking sleeve. 11. Check the installation as described in section 4.4 Installation

check-list. 12. Tension the scraper (refer to the operating manual of the re-

spective spring tensioner for the tension specifications). 13. Remove all tools from the working area. 14. Turn the conveyor system on again. 15. Monitor the cleaner and test its cleaning performance.

7 Troubleshooting

7.1 Safety instructions

7.2 Troubleshooting

Please check the following points if there is excessively high wear of the cleaner blade and / or unsatisfactory cleaning performance is observed.:

NOTE

The product is exposed to highly different types of bulk materialsand is often deployed in extreme working and environmental con-ditions. Therefore faults other than those listed here may occur.In this case, Martin Engineering or one of its representatives canhelp with the positioning or with customized solutions. Only usethe conveyor system after the fault has been found and repaired.

Symptom Cause Corrective action

High wear and tear on the blades.

The cleaner is fitted too tightly on the conveyor belt.

Decrease the tension. Refer to corresponding manual for the installed tensioner

Inadequate cleaning efficiency or material accumulation.

The cleaner is fixed either too loosely or too tightly on the conveyor belt.

Increase or decrease the tension accordingly.

The cleaner is mounted too high on the head pulley and obstructs the material flow.

Install in a lower position.

The blades are worn out. Check the blades and replace where necessary. (See “Weekly maintenance”).

Damage or unusual wear pattern on the scraper blade.

Damaged conveyor belt or joints.

Check the conveyor belt joint(s) and repair or replace if necessary.

Scraper is installed in the material flow.

Install primary cleaner in another position.

Different tension values of the tensioner.

Check tension specifications and retighten if necessary.

Noises or vibrations. The scraper is fixed either too loosely or too tightly against the conveyor belt.

Adjust the tension if necessary.

The urethane of the scraper blade may not be suitable for the application.

Contact Martin Engineering or an authorised dealer.

8 Storage, deinstallation, disposal

8.1 Packing and transportation

The products described here are packed and shipped by Martin Engineering.

The products may be transported solely in the Martin Engineering packaging.

The logistics company in charge of the shipment shall be responsible for any damage and/or loss.

8.2 Storage

To ensure optimal function of the product, Martin Engineering recommends storing its components in a dry place at room temperature where they are protected against direct sunlight.

The best storage conditions are at +0 °C to +30 °C and 60% relative humidity.

Martin Engineering guarantees that the stored products will remain fully functional for at least 2 years under the storage conditions specified here.

8.3 Deinstallation

The deinstallation is carried out in the reverse order of the installation (see Section 5.2.2)

8.4 Disposal

Assemblies and/or single parts of the Martin Engineering products must be professionally disposed of after usage as follows.

• Complete assemblies must be dismantled, sorted by material type, and separately disposed of.

Comply with all nationally and internationally applicable disposal regulations when disposing of the product.
