Martin Luther King Jr.

Martin Luther King Jr.Aaron Borg

Born Michael King Jr. in Atlanta, Georgia

Had two siblings:Willie Christine andAlfred Daniel King

Loved by all who he was associated with.

During his childhood, he saw inequality everywhere he went. His dad was very influential in his life on the issue of racism.

He was an intelligent student who was enrolled into Morehouse College at the age of 15.He also received his PH.D at Boston University.

His spiritual development was influenced by his father and grandfather but especially Dr. Benjamin E. Mays, president of Morehouse College. Dr. Mays spoke for racial equality and encouraged King to view Christianity as a potential force for social change.

While attending school in Boston, he found the love of his life, Coretta Scott. They were married and moved to Montgomery, Alabama, where he followed the footsteps of his father and became a pastor of Dexter Avenue Baptist Church.

He believed the key to getting rid of segregation and discrimination was taking on a leadership role. With the protesting on the situation of the Montgomery buses, he was soon asked to be a spokesman. He saw this as his opportunity to take on a leadership role.

He believed that violence and hatred was not the answer to solve the problem of discrimination. He took on Gandhis approach of peace. Dr. King said, love your enemies and just leave it at that.

Martin Luther King Jr. was assaulted many timesHis feelings on this matter always stayed in his mind. In an interview he states, I guess I had a very depressing response because I realized that these were my own people, these were Negroes throwing eggs at me. He wondered if it was worth it, all the sacrifices and suffering when his own people did not have an understanding or appreciation for what he did. Later he realized when he was speaking in church not of himself but about the very people, the society that made people respond like this.

Martin Luther led a lot of marches, but the largest march was to the nations capital. Over 200,000 people attended this march to hear Martins most memorable speech, I Have a Dream.

In an interview with a student, he was asked how he felt about being nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. King replied, Im honored to be considered for the highest award... Its not a personal tribute to me. It is more of a tribute to the thousands of gallant people who have participated in the struggle for equality.

Martin Luther King Jr. was not a selfish man. He sacrificed for the opportunity for our generation to be together as one. He did not care about the assaults and threats against him. He cared that one day little black boys and little black girls would one day play with little white boys and little white girls.

On April 3 in what proved to be an eerily prophetic speech, he told supporters, "I've seen the promised land. I may not get there with you. But I want you to know tonight that we, as a people, will get to the promised land.

The next day Martin Luther King Jr. was shot and killed outside of his room at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tennessee.

Although he was killed, Martin Luther King Jr.'s life had a seismic impact on race relations in the United States.

Dr. King was a visionary leader who was deeply committed to achieving social justice through nonviolent means.
