Martin Luther King, Jr. was born on January15, 1929, in Atlanta, Georgia. He was theson of Reverend Martin LutherKing, Sr. and Alberta WilliamsKing. Martin’s father was apastor at a popular Baptistchurch in Atlanta.

Martin became aware of prejudice and inequality as a

black child growing up in the South.

As a child,Martin was

friends.

Martin attended Booker T. Washington HighSchool. It was the first black publichigh school in Atlanta. Martinwas such a good student, heskipped the ninth andtwelfth grades and wasonly 15 when heentered college!

Martin went to collegeat Morehouse College in

Atlanta. He graduated with adegree in sociology.

Martin wasn’t finished with school yet!Next, he went to CrozerTheological Seminary inPennsylvania to earn hisdegree in divinity. Whilein college in Pennsylvania,he was awarded a prizefor “most outstandingstudent.”

Martin and Coretta left Boston in 1954 tomove to Montgomery, Alabama, whereMartin became a preacher at DexterAvenue Baptist Church. In1955, Martin finished his thesisand received his doctoraldegree. Now he was knownas Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

In 11 years, Martin earned three degrees from three different

colleges! Wow!

In 1955, an important event in civil rightshappened. Rosa Parks, a black woman inMontgomery, refused to give up her busseat to a white man. She was arrested andtaken to jail. Martin and other black leadersdecided this was the right time to demanddesegregation of public buses inMontgomery.

The boycott was successful andMontgomery laws changed, ending the“white-only” sections of buses. Thisnonviolent political action brought Martininto the limelight. His name became known asan effective civil rights leader—and he wasonly in his middle twenties!

Martin became very active in civil rightscauses. He organized the SouthernChristian Leadership Conference (SCLC),which was a church-based civil rightsgroup. He participated in civil rightsdemonstrations andcontinued to faceviolence, beatings,and arrests.

In 1968, while traveling through Memphis,Tennessee, Martin was shot and killed onthe balcony of his hotel. People all over theworld mourned Martin Luther King, Jr.’sdeath. He was 39 years old. Dr. King devoted his life to working for equal rightsfor ALL Americans.
