he ecame more coninced than eer that noniolent resistance was the most potent weapon

aailale to oppressed people in their struggle for freedom.

 As a pastor of a 8aptist church in Montgomery) Alaama) King lead a 8lac+ us oycott. 3e and

ninety others were arrested and indicted under the proisions of a law ma+ing it illegal to conspire to

ostruct the operation of a usiness. King and seeral others were found guilty) ut appealed their

case. As the us oycott dragged on) King was gaining a national reputation. The ultimate success of 

the Montgomery us oycott made King a national hero.

,r. King1s G?75 Letter from Birmingham Jail  inspired a growing national ciil rights moement. Bn

8irmingham) the goal was to completely end the system of segregation in eery aspect of pulic life

Motel in Memphis) Tennessee. 3e was only 5? at the time of his death. ,r. King was turning his

attention to a nationwide campaign to help the poor at the time of his assassination. 3e had neer

waered in his insistence that noniolence must remain the central tactic of the ciil-rights
