Dearly Beloved in Christ,
Happy to greet you all in this page of Dawn.
The month August and September are months of happy and joy to all of us.
August 15, the day Our Mother land was freed from the clutches of the British
rule. August 30 gives a new year to our church, September marks the Onam fes-
tival. Here come the word of happiness and cheer. In the midsts of these happi-
ness, we are bound to look into the matter more seriously. Freedom that we en-
joy today are the result of many great persons who had poured their life. On Au-
gust 30 ,We are completing 34 years in Chandigarh as a Mar Thoma Church
Community. New year for our church should gives us the providence of God to
us in the past years…
Onam, is a nostalgic journey back in time into the golden era of King Ma-
habali's rule. Many of us know the Malayalam 'Onappattu' starting
‘Maveli naddu vannidum kaaalam
Maanushar ellarum onnupolle
Aamothamoode vasikkum kaalam
Aapathangarkum ottilla thanum … '
The poem gives us the meaning that All humans were equal. Life was joyful and
there was no danger. Sickness, sorrow, child deaths and evil were unknown in
his country. All people were good. There was no thieving, cheating or lying.
Double measure- which the Bible says is abhorrence before God (Proverbs 11:1)
was also unknown in Mahabali's country. It seems a term of Kingdom of God.
Onam is also a festival of harvest and sharing. Of course sharing involves
a sacrifice. And the centuries have not taken away the sanctity of the sacrifice.
People of all faiths-Christians, Hindus, and Muslims etc -all joins together and
rejoices, and shares their resources.
In this new year of our church, let us take an oath that we would lead an
honest life free from corruption and set an example to other human beings to get
to a righteous way of life. Let us share our resources with all those who are poor
and needy... Let our lives be a message to all those who are around us. Let us
cherish the virtue of sharing and look forward hopefully and prayerfully to the
eschatological coming of Christ. Let us make ourselves and our fellow beings
ready for the final judgement. May God be with us always and guide us in His
love with His wisdom and blessings.
I wish you all a Happy Onam in advance and a prosperous new year! Let
God bless us!
Thank You
Yours in Christ
Liju Achen

OUR ORGANISATIONSOUR ORGANISATIONSOUR ORGANISATIONSOUR ORGANISATIONS
The Mar Thoma Yuvajana Sakhyam
The Mar Thoma Yuvajana Sakhyam was organized with a view that all the young
people in the Church should accept Jesus Christ as their Lord and saviour , and bear wit-
ness to His saving power. It was organized in 1933 by a resolution of the Sabha Pra-
thinidhi Mandalam. The first president of the Sakhyam was Rev.V P Mammen and the
Vice- Presidents were Rev. K E Oommen and Rev. C M John (later Juhanon Mar Thoma
Metropolitan) and the first Secretary was Mr. V E Thomas (later Rev. V E Thomas, Sin-
gapore). Branches of the Sakhyam were set up in the Parishes with a four-fold pro-
gramme of worship, study, witness and service. Mr. M M Thomas (later Dr. M M Tho-
mas) was appointed as Organising Secretary in 1945 and he was the full time worker of
the Sakhyam. Under his dynamic leadership, the Sakhyam struck deep roots and spread
its branches far and wide.
Most of the Parishes both inside and outside Kerala have branches of the Sakhyam.
A group of such branches form a center. There are a number of such Centres under each
Diocese. The Constitution of the Sakhaym prescribes that the President should be a
Bishop of the Church.
The Sakhyam publishes a monthly magazine Yuvadeepam (Malayalam) since
1956, Ripples (English) since 1994, and a Kannada Quarterly Jeeva Vani since 2003,
with articles of interest to the youth and with focus on the needs of the Church and Soci-
ety. It also contains Bible reading notes for daily devotional study. The Sakhyam also
publishes an annual calendar. The establishment of the Youth Center in Adoor and in
Bangalore has been an important achievement of the Sakhyam. It provides facilities for
the youth to hold study conferences, retreats and other meetings. The center has accom-
modation for about 200 young people to camp there.
The Sakhyam provides incentive for the development of the varied talents of young
people by organizing studies on topics of current interest, and competition in sports,
games, and cultural activities.
Gospel tours are arranged to mission centers so that the young people get a first
hand knowledge of the challenges and opportunities of the mission fields. Gospel distri-
bution squads are trained to distribute the scriptures in different places. Youth conven-
tions are held on Diocesan and regional basis to promote study, and dedication of life.
Campaigns are held against alcoholism and other social evils. In pursuance of such pro-
jects a vigilance corps is operating. Vocational guidance is being provided in a few
branches. There are also self-employment projects under the auspices of the branches and
centers. The Yuvajana Sakhyam works for meeting the varied needs of the growing gen-
eration.
The Golden Jubilee of the Sakhyam was celebrated in 1985. An Administrative
block of the Sakhyam was completed near the Sabha Office near Tiruvalla as Jubilee Me-
morial Project. It was inaugurated in 1986.The Sakhyam started its own printing press In
2006 to provide training and employment to the youth. At present, a thirteen member Ad-
hock Committee with The Most. Rev. Dr. Joseph Mar Thoma Metropolitan as the Presi-
dent and Rev. Sijo John as Convenor leads the administrative functions.
