Martha Gabriel Career Highlights
• Professor, Faculty of Education, University of Prince Edward Island, July 2012-present.
Research focus: the early years of childhood; e-learning; effective practices in online
teaching and learning; singing as a developmental literacy strategy.
Teaching focus: qualitative research methods, literacy and information literacies,
integration of information and communication technology into classroom teaching.
Associate Professor: 2003-2012
Assistant Professor: 2000-2002
Lecturer: 1997-1999
• Leader in researching and implementing digital technologies for teaching and learning.
My work at the national level with the Canadian Association for Distance Education
emerged from my engagement with digital technologies at UPEI. I served as Chair of the
UPEI E-learning Committee (2007-2010); and as a member of numerous technology
committees including the Knowledge Economy Network Committee, UPEI Presidential
Task Force on Computer Services/ Information Technology, Robertson Library/ITEC
Committee, Steering Committee-UPEI Information Technology Planning, and the
Steering Committee-ITEC Business Plan. I was instrumental in the writing of two
strategic documents for information technology integration at UPEI: E-learning at the
University of Prince Edward Island: A Planning Document (2009), and Extended
Learning @ UPEI: A Strategy for Online Teaching/Learning (2005). My initiatives with
digital technologies have also had international impact through my engagement with
teachers and students in St. Vincent and the Grenadines.
• Leader in Early Years research in Canada: Founder and co-organizer of pan-Canadian
team of researchers in Early Years field, The Canadian Network for Early Years
Research. In the Association of Canadian Deans of Education (ACDE) Accord on Early
Learning and Early Childhood Education (2013), the Network is acknowledged on the
title page:
ACDE gratefully acknowledges the contributions of The Canadian
Network for Early Years Research and of the following Contributors.
I am one of the researchers specifically named as a Contributor to this national document.
Respected Researcher and successful Tri-Council grant holder (SSHRC and CIHR). I
have conducted 28 funded research studies/grant projects. My dissertation research and
subsequent SSHRC research have framed my work in elearning and digital literacies. My
monograph, Better Practices in Online Teaching and Learning: Insights from the
Research, became the basis of a Summer Institute I conducted. This Institute had a
regional impact; faculty from UPEI and from other Atlantic universities attended. It
provided an opportunity for instructors from the region to explore the affordances and
challenges of teaching online, and engage in evidence-based learning about the issue.
• Presenter of numerous research papers, symposia, panels, posters, and workshops at
international, national, and provincial venues. I have presented on early childhood, online
learning and distance education, digital literacies, and singing as an early years literacy
(part of a multi-million dollar international research study) at prestigious education
conferences in Canada and internationally.

GRADUATE FACULTY ACTIVITY
I have worked with doctoral and Masters students since the Faculty of Education Masters
program commenced in 1999, and the doctoral program was initiated in 2010. I am currently
supervising two PhD students, and serve as committee member for one Masters student.
Supervisor of Doctoral Students
21
PhD Supervisor: G. Arias de Sanchez, 2012-present. Focus: Mathematics in the
Early Years.
PhD Co-Supervisor: A. Roach O’Keefe, 2012-present. Focus: Digital Literacies in
the Early Years.
Doctoral directed studies: In the PhD program at the Faculty of Education, Supervisors teach
these Directed Studies courses to their PhD students.
ED 702: Directed Studies in Educational Research Methodology and Methods;
ED 703: Directed Studies in Educational Research and Theory.
Examiner of Doctoral Work at Faculty of Education, UPEI
In our program, doctoral students must develop an electronic portfolio as evidence of
their comprehensive knowledge in areas of Theory, Research, Professional Competencies
and Instructional Competencies. The Comprehensive E-Portfolio, with the attendant oral
examination, is the Comprehensive examination for our doctoral students. An Internal
Examiner is invited to review the portfolio, provide comments in writing, and participate
in the oral examination of the student.
Internal Examiner for PhD Comprehensive Portfolio: O. Bryanton, 2015.
Internal Examiner for PhD Comprehensive Portfolio: B. Stewart, 2012.
Examiner of Doctoral Dissertations at National Level External Examiner: K. Snow EdD dissertation, Examining Indigenous students’ persistence in a
hybrid pre-nursing transitions environment, University of Calgary, January, 2015.
External Examiner: G. Bryan PhD Dissertation, Exploring the reading non-engagement of two
grade six students during sustained silent reading. University of British Columbia, May, 2010.
Masters of Education Students
I have been supervisor or co-supervisor for 12 Masters students, committee member
for 8 students, and internal examiner for 4 Masters student theses.
Supervisors and co-supervisors have the same roles and responsibilities in the Faculty of
Education. Hereafter, I will simply refer to the Supervisor. The supervisor is responsible
for initiating Supervisory Committee meetings with the student, and guiding the student
in developing his/her thesis proposal, ensuring that ethics protocols are followed, and that
the Research Ethics Board submission is completed in a timely fashion. The
supervisor keeps apprised of the student’s progress in data collection, data analysis, and
interpretation of results. The supervisor is also responsible for ensuring that the student’s
literature review is current. The supervisor meets with the student on a consistent basis to
ensure that the student stays on track in terms of writing the thesis, and preparing to
defend it. The supervisor participates in the thesis defense, and in the oral examination of
the student. If revisions are required before the thesis is acceptable, the supervisor is
responsible for ensuring that the student completes these.
