Strength of Schedule: According to gberatings.com, the Herd has the 12th strongest strength of schedule in the nation, which is also the highest among non-BCS schools. Marshall started the season by heading to Morgantown to face nationally-ranked West Virginia and hosted Virginia Tech, another ranked program, three weeks later. The team then played #8 Houston and Tulsa on the road in league play this season, who are a combined 14-0 in C-USA play. Another road opponent, Ohio, is 8-3 and has captured its third MAC East championship in the last six years. The Herd also owns wins over Southern Mississippi, who was also nationally-ranked until recently, and another over Big East foe Louisville. The win over the Cards was the fi rst non-conference road win in eight years.

Battle for the Bowl: Saturday’s game against ECU will mean the end of the line for one team and bowl eligibility for the other as both teams enter the game at 5-6 overall. A win would also give Marshall its sixth win over an FBS opponent, the fi rst time the program has accomplished that total in the regular season since 2004. The 2009 Herd’s sixth FBS win came against Ohio in the Little Caesars Pizza Bowl.

National Highlights: Marshall currently stands second nationally in tackles for loss (90), and is tied for 12th in fumbles recovered (13). Individually, Vinny Curry is tied for second nationally with six forced fumbles and is also second on the national leaderboard in tackles for loss (20.5) and is also tied for fourth in sacks (11.0). George Carpenter is tied for sixth with three fumble recoveries.

Curry Moves Up The Charts: With 1.5 tackles for loss in the loss at Memphis, Vinny Curry has the lead in career tackles for loss among active FBS student-athletes with 47.5. The complete list is below:

1 Vinny Curry, Marshall SR DL 47.5 2 Cordarro Law, Southern Miss. SR DL 46.02 Sean Spence, Miami SR LB 46.02 Sammy Brown, Houston SR LB 46.05 Miles Burris, San Diego State SR LB 43.5

Curry is also climbing the school’s record book in tackles for loss and sacks as well.

Coming Through in the Clutch: Marshall is one of just three programs in the country that has an undefeated mark in at least three games that have been decided by one score or less. The list is below:

Wyoming 4, (4-0), 15

Auburn 3, (3-0), 14Marshall 3, (3-0), 14

Whitehead Pins Them Back: Marshall punter Kase Whitehead, who was recently named to the Ray Guy Award Watch List, has been adept at pinning the opposition deep in its own territory, with 18 kicks that have been downed inside the 20-yard line this season. That total ranks in a tie for 21st nationally. Whitehead has punted, in his career and through 11 games in 2011, 269 times (a Marshall record) for a Marshall career record 10,641 yards (39.56 career average) with 77 punts downed inside the 20-yard line, only 20 touchbacks and 79 fair catches. He will join three other Marshall punters since 1950 to lead the Herd in punting in all four seasons.

This season’s Inside the 20 list is below:

Gale Named Academic All-District: Marshall linebacker Tyson Gale has been named to the Capital One Academic All-District 2 football team.

The senior linebacker, who holds a 3.72 grade point average in Exercise Physiology, is a co-captain on the 2011 Marshall squad. He is the third-leading tackler on the team with 76 stops (32 solo, 44 assisted), which includes 10 tackles for loss. He has also posted an interception and three pass breakups.

He was named Conference USA’s Defensive Player of the Week following the Herd’s 17-13 win at Big East foe Louisville when he had a team-high seven tackles, including a tackle for loss, and the biggest play of the game when he stepped in front of Louisville quarterback Teddy Bridgewater’s pass to pick it off at the UL 30-yard line with 4:32 left. That turnover put the Herd off ense in business deep in Cardinal territory and allowed it to cash in nearly three minutes later for the game-winning score. Gale led a defense that allowed just 60 yards rushing on 29 attempts (2.1 per carry) that day, including (-9) yards total off ense in the fi rst quarter.

Curry Invited to Senior Bowl: Marshall defensive end Vinny Curry has been invited to participate in the 2012 Senior Bowl at Ladd-Peebles Stadium in Mobile, Ala. The game will be held on January 28 at 4 p.m. and will be televised on the NFL Network.

Curry is also in the running for the Bronko Nagurski Trophy (nation’s best defensive player), the Chuck Bednarik Award (nation’s best defensive player) and the Rotary Lombardi Award (nation’s best lineman).

He was named Bronko Nagurski National Defensive Player of the Week following his 4.0 TFL, 3.5 sack performance in the 24-20 Homecoming win over Rice on Oct. 15. That award came on the heels of National Defensive Lineman of the Week honor by the College Football Performance Awards after his 4.5 tackle for loss, three sack day in the 26-20 win over Southern Miss on Sept. 10.

The Senior Bowl is home to a one-of-a-kind NFL Convention. In addition to the two NFL coaching staff s who coach the two Senior Bowl teams each year, over 800 NFL general managers, head coaches, assistant coaches, personnel directors, scouts and other front offi ce personnel from the 32 NFL teams annually attend Senior Bowl Week in Mobile.

Coaching staff s for the game each year are selected by the NFL offi ce. In addition to the coaches, each NFL team chosen by the league to coach the Senior Bowl teams also brings its training, video and equipment staff s to the contest to work with the Senior Bowl players and maximize the many benefi ts that the players will receive by playing in the contest.

Struggling With Second: Marshall has been outscored 137-68 in the second quarter this season, after also being outscored 102-68 in the second stanza last season. The Herd outscored the opposition 110-93 in the second quarter in 2009. Marshall does hold a 61-55 edge in the third quarter this season, however.

Statistical Struggles: Currently, the Herd ranks near the bottom of the FBS in third down conversion percentage (103rd, 35.58 percent), total off ense (105th, 325.36), scoring off ense (106th, 20.91), fi rst downs gained (108th, 16.45), fourth down conversion percentage (117th, 21.43 percent) and rushing touchdowns (T-117th, 7).

Marshall vs. Ranked OpponentsThe 2011 season is the fi rst year that the Marshall program has faced three ranked opponents in a single season. Since moving to Division I-A (FBS) in 1997, the Herd has enjoyed a pair of landmark victories against nationally-ranked opponents. The following is the Marshall Thundering Herd’s game-by-game results against NCAA FBS

Tulsa Notes: Travon Van’s 69-yard rushing touchdown was the longest rush for the program since Darius Marshall also ran for 69 yards against Memphis on Sept. 26, 2009. Aaron Dobson recorded his eighth touchdown catch of the year, which ties him for Cody Slate’s 2008 mark for the most single-season TD catches since Darius Watts’ 11 in 2003. The Marshall defense allowed 682 yards of total off ense, the most for the program since its elevation to I-A (FBS) in 1997.

UAB Notes: There were several notes to be taken from Marshall’s 59-14 win over UAB. First, the Herd’s 59 points scored was its most since Marshall’s 66-21 win over Buff alo on Oct. 12, 2002. Marshall also led 38-0 at halftime, the fi rst time MU had shutout an opponent in the fi rst half since the Herd led 10-0 against ECU on Nov. 10, 2007. The last time the Thundering Herd scored at least 38 points in a half was that same game when it scored 52 against the Bulls. A.J. Graham threw for fi ve touchdowns. It was the fi rst time a Herd quarterback had thrown for fi ve touchdowns since Stan Hill threw for fi ve against Kent State on Oct. 11, 2003. Gator Hoskins and Troy Evans’ both recorded two touchdowns. It was the fi rst time two Marshall players recorded two receiving touchdowns since Denero Marriott and Demetrius Doss accomplished the feat on Dec. 18, 2002 against Louisville in the GMAC Bowl. Defensive touchdowns by Omar Brown and Billy Mitchell made it the fi rst time Marshall had two defensive scores since the GMAC Bowl on Dec. 19, 2001. That game had four defensive touchdowns, two by each team. Terence Tarpley and Ralph Street each had a 25-yard interception return for the Herd.

Houston Notes: The Herd racked up 506 yards total off ense in the loss at Houston, the most for the program against any opponent since Sept. 15, 2007 vs. New Hampshire (48-35 UNH win) and the most against an FBS (I-A) opponent since Nov. 5, 2004 at Akron when it went for 554 in a 31-28 loss to the Zips. Marshall also held the ball for 42 minutes and 15 seconds, the highest total for the program in at least the last 11 years. On the downside, Marshall gave up 63 points to the Cougars, the most since the program gave up that many at Georgia Southern in a 63-21 loss on Nov. 18, 1989. UH’s 479 passing yards were the most by an MU opponent since UTEP notched 517 yards in a 52-21 win over the Herd.

0-For-Texas: Marshall has yet to win a football game in the state of Texas. The Thundering Herd is now 0-8 all-time in games played in the Lonestar State and that total includes loses at UTEP in 2005 and 2009, the 2006 and 2010 losses at SMU, a loss at Rice in 2008 and losses at Houston in 2007 and 2011. Marshall also lost the 2004 Fort Worth Bowl, in a game played at TCU, to Cincinnati. Interestingly enough, Marshall has never lost to a school from Texas at home. The Thundering Herd is a perfect 8-0 against Texas schools in games played in Huntington. Marshall owns a win over North Texas (1988), a win over Houston (2008), two wins over Rice (2007 and 2011), two wins over SMU (2005 and 2009) and a pair of wins over UTEP (2006 and 2010).

Curry Named National, Conference USA Defensive Player of the Week: Marshall senior defensive lineman Vinny Curry was selected as the Bronko Nagurski National Defensive Player of the Week, one day after being picked by Conference USA for the same honor, following the Herd’s 24-20 Homecoming victory over Rice. Curry is the third Marshall defender to win the conference award this season, following

linebackers George Carpenter (Sept. 12) and Tyson Gale (Oct. 3), and it is the fi fth time a Herd player has won a weekly honor (two Special Teams honors for punter Kase Whitehead).

The Neptune, N.J. native had another monster game Saturday, racking up nine tackles, which included four tackles for loss and 3.5 sacks, to go with a forced fumble and a fumble recovery. All four of the sacks Curry had a hand in came on third down, eff ectively killing each drive in the process. Another one of his quarterback pressures resulted in a Rice fumble that Curry himself recovered at the Owls’ 25-yard line. Finally, his strip of Rice RB Sam McGuffi e set up the Herd off ense at the Rice 23 with 3:31 left, with the Herd facing a 20-17 defi cit. Marshall then scored the game-winning touchdown fi ve plays later on a four-yard Tron Martinez scamper.

Rice Notes: Marshall quarterback A.J. Graham had a big day under center for the Herd, making his fi rst career start in the 24-20 win over Rice. His 129 rushing yards were the most for a Marshall player since Martin Ward’s 136 vs. SMU (Marshall 34-31 win) on Nov. 21, 2009. Graham’s rushing yardage was the fi rst 100-yard game for a Marshall quarterback since Bernard Morris rushed for 126 yards on 11 carries in a 26-7 win over ECU on Nov. 10, 2007. Graham’s second touchdown, which came on an 87-yard drive that concluded in the second quarter with his fi ve-yard touchdown run, was the team’s longest scoring drive of the season. As a team, the Herd rushed for 217 yards in the win, the most since it piled up 262 in the aforementioned win over SMU in 2009. Finally, Tyler Warner’s 45-yard fi eld goal to the end the fi rst half tied his career-long.

Gale, Whitehead Claim Weekly Honors: Marshall linebacker Tyson Gale (Alva, Okla.) and punter Kase Whitehead (Maryville, Tenn.) both racked up weekly honors Monday following the Herd’s 17-13 win at Big East foe Louisville on Saturday.

Gale was named Conference USA Defensive Player of the Week by two outlets, one by a vote of the league’s media and the other by College Sports Madness (CollegeSportsMadness.com) after the program’s fi rst non-conference road win and fi rst victory over a BCS school since 2003. Whitehead was named the league’s Special Teams Player of the Week for the second time this season.

Gale, a captain, had a team-high seven tackles on the day, including a tackle for loss, and the biggest play of the game when he stepped in front of Louisville quarterback Teddy Bridgewater’s pass to pick it off at the UL 30-yard line with 4:32 left. That turnover put the Herd off ense in business deep in Cardinal territory and allowed it to cash in nearly three minutes later for the game-winning score. Gale led a defense that allowed just 60 yards rushing on 29 attempts (2.1 per carry) Saturday, including (-9) yards total off ense in the fi rst quarter.

Whitehead continued the pinpoint accuracy with his punting as he dropped four of his fi ve punts inside the 20 in Saturday’s victory. He also claimed the honor after Marshall’s 26-20 win over Southern Mississippi when he averaged 42.5 yards on eight punts and dropped fi ve kicks inside the eight-yard line.

Louisville Notes: Marshall’s 17-13 win at Louisville was not only the program’s fi rst win over a BCS team since a 2003 victory at sixth-ranked Kansas State (snapping a 19-game losing streak against BCS schools), it was also the fi rst non-conference road win since that victory as well. The Herd held the ball for 34 minutes, 44 seconds against the Cards, the longest for the school since a 36:08 mark in the 21-17 win over Ohio in the 2009 Little Caesars Pizza Bowl. The 13 Cardinal points were the fewest the Herd has allowed in a non-conference game since falling 13-3 at No. 3 Georgia in 2004, and the fewest by a non-league foe in a Marshall victory since a 21-3 defeat of BYU in the 1999 Motor City Bowl.

UCF Notes: The Herd off ense struggled mightily in the downpour that took place in the loss at UCF. The 130 yards of total off ense, six fi rst downs and 19 minutes, 46 seconds of Time of Possession were the lowest totals for the program since entering Conference USA in 2005.

Hokie Notes: The Herd’s Vinny Curry blocked an extra point in the 30-10 loss to Virginia Tech, the fi rst time a Marshall player had accomplished the feat since Johnny Jones did so in a 52-21 loss at UTEP on Nov. 28, 2009. Marshall’s six rushing yards against VT was the lowest for the program since recording a -3 total in the 2004 Fort Worth Bowl in a 32-14 loss vs. Cincinnati.

SIX!: The Thundering Herd defense forced six turnovers in the 26-20 win over Southern Miss, the most since the program forced that many in a 59-14 win over Delaware in the second round of the I-AA playoff s on Nov. 30, 1996.

Herd Earns Several Weekly Honors: Marshall quarterback Rakeem Cato, linebacker George Carpenter, defensive lineman Vinny Curry and punter Kase Whitehead all claimed weekly honors following the Herd’s 26-20 victory over Southern Mississippi Saturday afternoon at Joan C. Edwards Stadium.

Cato was named National Freshman of the Week by Rivals.com after his performance. The Miami, Fla. native completed 64.3 percent of his passes when he connected on 27 of 42 attempts for 275 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions. With the Herd facing a 14-point fi rst half defi cit, the signal-caller engineered three touchdown drives, two of which ended with scoring tosses to wideout Aaron Dobson and the other to tight end Gator Hoskins.

Carpenter claimed Conference USA Defensive Player of the Week honors from the league offi ce and College Sports Madness (CollegeSportsMadness.com) after he recorded a game-high 13 tackles, including two tackles for loss, one sack, a forced one fumble and two fumble recoveries in a stellar all-around performance. His second fumble recovery was one of the biggest plays of the game, as he drilled USM’s Kendrick Hardy on the second play of the second half and alertly fell on the loose ball. That turnover set up the Marshall off ense deep in USM territory and allowed the Herd to tie the game fi ve plays later. He and his defensive teammates helped hold the Golden Eagles to just 75 rushing yards on 28 carries, while piling up fi ve sacks and forcing six USM turnovers.

One of those teammates was defensive end Vinny Curry, who was named National Defensive Lineman of the Week by the College Football Performance Awards (CollegeFootballPerformance.com). Curry had six stops on the day, including 4.5 tackles for loss and three sacks. One of those tackles for loss was a safety with 9:15 left in the contest when he caught Hardy in the end zone to give the Herd a 26-17 lead.

Whitehead might have been Marshall’s most important player in the Herd’s win as was named C-USA’s Special Teams Player of the Week. He averaged 42.5 yards on eight punts, but backed up the Golden Eagle off ense inside the 8-yard line on fi ve of those eight kicks. That fi eld position led to two Marshall touchdowns on the ensuing possessions and another resulted in a safety, giving the home team a nine-point lead.

Booker Shines: Return man Andre Booker had a whale of a game in the season-opening loss to West Virginia. He put the Herd up by a 7-0 mark quickly when he exploded for an 87-yard punt return for touchdown and followed that up with 93 kick return yards on four attempts to give him 180 all-purpose yards for the game. Prior to the punt return, Booker was also the last Marshall student-athlete to return a punt for touchdown when he victimized the Ohio Bobcats with a 58-yard return in the 2009 Little Caesars Pizza Bowl. He followed that performance with four kick returns for 95 yards in the 26-20 win over Southern Miss.

Youth Movement: Marshall played 12 true freshmen and 28 redshirt and true freshmen in 2010, a fi gure that ranked among this highest in the nation. True freshmen Trevor Black, Zach Dunston, Demetrius Evans, Gator Hoskins, Jermaine Kelson, Tron Martinez, Darryl Roberts, T.J. Ross, Jeremiah Taylor, Garrett Scott, Brandon Sparrow and Eddie Sullivan all saw game action.

Vinny Gets it Done: Thundering Herd senior defensive end Vinny Curry had a great year in 2010 with 94 total tackles, 18 tackles for loss and a C-USA leading 12.0 sacks. Last year, he was selected to SI.com’s Midseason All-America First-Team and was named to Phil Steele’s Midseason All-America squad as a third team selection. He ranked sixth in the nation in total sacks with 12. He had another fi ne performance against Southern Miss, when he was named National Defensive Lineman of the Week by the College Football Performance Awards (CollegeFootballPerformance.com). Curry had six stops on the day, including 4.5 tackles for loss and three sacks.

Tough Road: Last season, Marshall played seven consecutive opponents that advanced to a bowl game last year to start the season. The Thundering Herd opened the season with games at #2 Ohio State, vs. #23 West Virginia, at Bowling Green, vs. Ohio, at Southern Miss, vs. UCF and at ECU. In 2011, the Herd will face two nationally-ranked opponents in #24 West Virginia and #13 Virginia Tech.

THE LAST MEETING...

Marshall Football Falls at East Carolina

(Oct. 23, 2010)

GREENVILLE, N.C. (AP) - Jon Williams ran for 111 yards and a touchdown to help East Carolina stay perfect in Conference USA by beating Marshall 37-10 on Saturday. Dominique Davis threw for 208 yards and two scores for the Pirates (5-2, 4-0), who are off to their best start in league play since going 5-0 in 2001. The two-time defending league champions have won 10 straight against C-USA opponents, including last season’s win against Houston in the title game. East Carolina has also won three straight overall since consecutive road losses to Atlantic Coast Conference teams Virginia Tech and North Carolina. East Carolina shook off a sluggish start by scoring twice in the fi nal 2 1/2 minutes of the fi rst half to take a 20-10 halftime lead. The Pirates then scored on their fi rst three drives of the second half to blow the game open against the Thundering Herd (1-6, 0-3).

Marshall opened the game with a dime formation that seemed to keep the Pirates off balance for most of the fi rst half. Marshall was able to limit ECU’s high-powered off ense to only 167 yards of off ense in the fi rst half. The Thundering Herd recorded 186 total yards of off ense and actually recorded 15 fi rst downs to the Pirates 10. However, ECU took advantage of three Marshall turnovers to post a 20-10 lead at the half.

Marshall quarterback Brian Anderson was intercepted three times in the fi rst half and all three turnovers led to ECU scoring drives. The fi rst interception at the 1:28 mark came deep in ECU territory and was returned to the 50-yardline where ECU managed a fi eld goal. The second came with 3:30 to go in the half and led to a Jon Williams 29-yard touchdown run just seven plays later to put the Pirates up 17-10. Anderson had a third pass defl ect off of an off ensive lineman that was picked out of the air by defensive lineman Michael Brooks. That play led to an ECU 40-yard fi eld goal to close out the half.

The Pirates were able to make several adjustments at halftime and they went on to out-score the Herd 17-0 in the second half to post the 37-10 win.

Doc Holliday

Head Coach - Second Season

Marshall University Director of Athletics Mike Hamrick introduced Doc Holliday as the Thundering Herd’s 29th head football coach on December 17, 2009.

Holliday, a Hurricane W.Va. native, is widely regarded as one of the top recruiters in the nation and he brings with him 31 years of collegiate coaching experience to Marshall that includes stops at Florida, NC State and West Virginia.

“This was an extensive search. I looked at a lot of head coaches, coordinators and others and I could not convince myself of anyone that was better for this job than Doc Holliday,” Hamrick said. “He is a state native that understands and has a passion for this state and I am excited to have him as our head football coach.”

His fi rst Herd squad won four of its last fi ve games in 2010 and featured two fi rst-team All-Conference USA performers in defensive end Vinny Curry and linebacker

Mario Harvey. Marshall got it done in the classroom as well as tight end Lee Smith was named to C-USA’s All-Academic Team and the squad, as a whole, was recognized by the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) for its outstanding graduation rate. The Herd was one of just 15 schools in major college football to have a graduation rate of 90 percent or better based on the NCAA’s Graduation Success Rate formula.

During his coaching career, Holliday has coached in 20 bowl games, three national championship games and coached 11 players that have gone on to the National Football League. He has also coached four All-Americans and 16 student-athletes that have earned all-conference or All-East honors.

“My ultimate goal has always been to be a Division I head football coach at a major university and to have this opportunity at Marshall, a school rich in tradition and full of potential, is a dream come true,” Holliday said.

Holliday comes to Marshall after serving as associate head coach at West Virginia for the past two seasons where he also served as the director of recruiting while coaching tight ends and fullbacks for the Mountaineers. Rivals.com has named him one of the Top 25 recruiters in the nation and he helped WVU amass a 2009 recruiting class that was nationally ranked No. 22 by Scout.com and No. 27 by Rivals.com.

Prior to that, he worked as the associate head coach and safeties coach at the University of Florida from 2005 to 2007 and as the associate head coach and wide receivers coach at NC State from 2000-04. During his tenure at Florida, the Gators won the 2006 National Championship and the UF secondary led the SEC in interceptions in both 2005 and 2006. He also coached two All-SEC standouts Reggie Nelson and Major Wright. At NC State, he coached three of the top eight receivers in Wolfpack history (Koren Robinson, Bryan Peterson and Jerricho Cotchery) and the 2003 N.C. State team set six diff erent school-records for passing including yards, yards per game, passing touchdowns and completion percentage.

He started his coaching career as a graduate assistant in 1979 and went on to serve in a variety of coaching positions at his alma mater that included serving as the wide receivers coach from 1983-1989 and again from 1993-1999, the inside linebackers coach from 1990-92 and as the assistant head coach from 1995-99. Holliday was a three-year letter-winner at linebacker at West Virginia (1976-78) and has earned both a bachelor’s degree (1979) and a master’s degree (1981) from WVU. He and his wife Diana have four children - Meghan, Cade, Chase and Cody.
