Horicon National

Wildlife Refuge

Welcome to Horicon National Wildlife Refuge. This

22,000 acre refuge, managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, was established for the protection of

migratory birds and makes up the northern two-thirds

of the 33,000 acre Horicon Marsh.

Recreational Opportunities:

Wildlife observation, photography, hiking, fishing,

educational programs, guided tours, bicycling, snowshoeing, cross country skiing, and deer and

upland game hunting.

Public Use Areas:

Horicon “TernPike” Auto Tour – Accessed from

Hwy 49 – open daily year-round conditions

permitting. Paved driving route and three hiking trails along with a floating boardwalk

and bicycling and hiking access to the Wild

Goose State Trail. Hwy 49 Wildlife Viewing Area – Hwy 49 and Cty

Rd Z - open daily year-round. Hiking trail and

observation area. Old Marsh Road – Accessed from Point Rd. or

auto tour - only open seasonally for hiking

and bicycling to minimize disturbance to

migratory birds. Adjacent dikes are closed. Photo blind located on east end of road -

contact office for reservations.

Bud Cook Hiking Area – Point Rd. – Two hiking trails and observation area. Open daily year-

round.

Horicon Refuge Visitor Center – Cty Rd Z – Wildlife exhibits and gift shop. Hiking trails.

Rockvale Rd. Viewing Point – Rockvale Rd -

Observation point only.

Main Dike Road – Open daily year-round conditions permitting. Vehicles can drive

eastern portion (two-level gravel). Entire road

is open for hiking and bicycling year-round.

Access is limited to the road only-adjacent dikes are closed. Parking located near

fishing platform and use pull-offs for

wildlife viewing/photography.

Peachy, Ledge, and Main Dike Roads – Designated locations for bank fishing/piers

Refuge Regulations Refuge open during daylight hours only

Dogs are welcome but must be leashed

(except for upland game hunting) Access for wildlife observation/photography

hiking are limited to public use areas

(Dec 1 – Mar 15 the entire refuge is open to

hiking/snowshoeing/cross-country skiing) Fishing is limited to designated bank fishing

areas (Dec 1 – Mar 15 the entire refuge is

open to ice fishing - no motorized vehicles allowed for access).

NOT PERMITTED on the refuge: boats,

canoes, kayaks, or other floatable devices; ATV’s and snowmobiles; collection of

plants, berries, seeds, mushrooms, antlers

or other artifacts; fireworks; camping;

campfires; overnight parking; geocaches.

Horicon Marsh

State Wildlife Area

Welcome to the Horicon Marsh State Wildlife

Area. This 11,000 acre complex of wetlands and

uplands is managed for wildlife by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. This area is open

daily from 5:00a.m. to 10:00p.m. for year-round

enjoyment. The following information is provided

to help you enjoy the property safely.

Hiking/Snowshoeing/Cross-Country Skiing -

Hiking trails are open year round and are available to cross-country skis or snowshoes as

conditions permit.

Biking and Hiking - Biking, hiking and other

uses are available on the Wild Goose Trail.

Check with Dodge County Park System for

current regulations.

Canoeing - The best canoeing opportunities are

available along the main river corridor and main ditch accessed through the various boat

landings located around the southern one-third

of the marsh. Please be careful to minimize

disturbance to wildlife and watch out for motorboats which also use the area.

Educational Programs - Group presentations are available on a reservation basis. Public

programs are available on the weekends and

some weekdays during the year. Call 920-387-7893 for reservations or program schedules.

Fishing - The State Wildlife Area is open for

fishing. Check current regulations for season dates, bag and size limits.

Dogs - Dogs are welcome on the State Wildlife Area for hunting and recreation. You are

required to leash your dog on the entire State

Wildlife Area during the nesting season from

April 15- July 31st. Additionally, dogs must be

leashed at all times when using the public

hiking trails. Please clean up after your dog.

Geocaching - Geocaching is allowed on State

Wildlife Area Property. Please respect the

environment while searching and fill out the proper permit if placing a Geocache.

Hunting - Thousands of acres of the State

Wildlife Area are available for hunting during the various seasons. However, several areas are

closed or restricted. Please contact 920-387-

7860 or reference the Horicon Marsh Hunting Map for current restrictions.

Trapping - The State Wildlife Area is available to fur trapping through auction bid. Trapping is

administered through the Horicon Marsh Fur

Farm, per CH29.749 Wisconsin statutes.

Restrictions - Horses, snowmobiles, ATV’s,

bicycles, camping, open fires and overnight

parking are not allowed on the State Wildlife Area.

Housekeeping - To help keep the marsh beauti-

ful for others and your next visit, please take litter with you.

Development and management of this property are largely funded by hunting and trapping

license fees.
