SEASON 1909.

HE Board of Management have pleasure in forwarding herewith Programmes for the Season of j.--- MARSHALL-HALL CONCERTS to be held during the present year. The year 1908 was notable in

the history of Orchestral Music in Melbourne by reason of the munificent gift made to Professor Marshall-Hall by an anonymous donor of the sum of !1,000 to assist in carrying on these Concerts. It was decided to apply this money to the establishment of a Permanent Fund, the interest upon which would be available for all time for the performance of Orchestral Concerts in Melbourne and generally for the advancement of musical art. Further contributions towards the fund were invited from the public with the result that it now amounts to the sum of - 1,636/14/6. The response which has been and is still being made justifies the belief that at no distant date the fund will be sufficient to enable the Board of Management to permanently engage the services of the best musicians, to increase the number of Concerts given in each year, and to undertake the performance of works which under present conditions are impossible. In the meantime it is necessary that the public should grant a larger measure of support to the Concerts if the eminent work which Prof. Marshall-Hall has performed during the last 16 years is to be continued. The fine series of Orchestral Concerts which he has conducted during that period have been keenly appreciated by the music lovers of the community, and have also gained fcr the Orchestra a reputation throughout the musical world and the heartiest commendation of the great musical artists who have visited the City from time to time. As each of the Concerts which are to be given during the season will 'cost about ‘180 it is only with the aid of enthusiastic support that they can be maintained. It is desired to again draw attention to the fact that these Concerts are not carried out for personal gain. The object is entirely artistic and educational, and if there be any surplus after the expenses have been paid it will be devoted entirely to the Permanent Fund. To those who desire to advance musical art and maintain the high standard that has been set in the past the Board therefore appeals for assistance. Subscriptions to the fund of whatever amount will be gratefully received, but those who are unable to

subscribe can render great help by the purchase of Season Tickets which admit to the Concerts at a reduced price and entitle the holder (if desired) to the same seat at each Concert, thereby avoiding the

trouble of reserving seats on each occasion.

The experience of last year has compelled the Board to reluctantly abandon the evening Concerts for the present. This year's series, which consists of six Concerts, will be given on Saturday afternoons at intervals of about four weeks at the Melbourne Town Hall, commencing in April.

Of the new works to be performed, one of the principal is the Variation on an Original Theme, by Elgar, the so-called Enigma Variations. This work, which is exceedingly interesting and beautiful, represents Elgar's best contribution to Orchestral literature. A very attractive excerpt from Tschaikowsky's Suite in G, No. 3, will be heard for the first time in Australia, the excerpt chosen being the final number of the Suite, an Air with Variations. It shows the composer in his most tuneful and original mood. The remaining novelty is the third of the Concerti Grossi by Handel, the score and parts of which were presented to the Management by the Lady Northcote two years ago ; the other two Concerti Grossi have already been performed. This, the remaining number in B Minor, completes the set. Amongst works to be performed for the second time are the Academic Overture of Brahms, the Introduction to the Third Act of the Meistersingers, Dance of the Apprentices, and Entry of the Meistersingers, by Wagner, and the Slow Movement from the Tragic Symphony of Schubert. At the Fifth Concert it is proposed to perform the first Three Movements of the Ninth or Choral Symphony of Beethoven, the proper preparation of which will facilitate the performance of the complete work at a later date, when a suitable chorus can be obtained. The solo numbers set down for performance are Kol Nidrei for 'Cello and Orchestra, by Max Bruch (Mr. Hattenbach), which is to be repeated by request, Fantasia for Pianoforte and Orchestra, by Tschaikowsky, and the Beethoven Concerto in G Major, No. 4 (Mr. Scharf) which has not been performed in Melbourne for nearly twenty years, except at students'

concerts.

The prices of admission have been fixed as follows :—Reserved Seats and Balcony, 5/- ; Body of Hall, 3/- ; Area, 2/-. Season Tickets will be issued for Reserved Seats and Balcony, price L - 1/51-, which

will entitle the holder (if he wishes) to the same seat at each of the Concerts.

Applications for Season Tickets, and all correspondence in connection with the Concerts, should be addressed to the Hon. Secretary, M. Philip Fox, 472 Chancery Lane, Melbourne. Telephone 1002.
