On Your Mark, Get Set, READ!
eading can be one of many fun summer time activities . Research has shown it is also much more! Children who par- ticipate in public library summer reading programs not only avoid the “summer slide” in learning but also score higher on reading achievement tests than those who do not participate.
Just a few benefits to readers in the summer reading program include:
Summer reading programs encourage parents to read with their
children and highlight the joys of reading aloud. Reading aloud to
children at an early age is the most effective way to help them learn
and communicate with the written word.
Children who have easy access to books read more books. The
more children read, the better their fluency, vocabulary, and
comprehension.
Reading for pleasure is one of the building blocks needed for young
people to grow into healthy, productive adults.Source: http://www.cla-net.org/?78
It being summer, the program can be good fun and provide an
opportunity for family time. The Madison County Public Libraries strive
to encourage a love of reading in all our
residents, both young and mature.

Okay, so what exactly is letterboxing?
It’s an intriguing “treasure hunt” style activity that tradi-
tionally takes place outdoors. Letterboxers hide small,
weatherproof boxes in publicly accessible places (like
parks) and post clues to finding the box.
For the Summer Reading Program, we’ve created 9
temporary letterboxes: 3 in Hot Springs, 3 in Marshall, and
3 in Mars Hill. We’re going to help you out and give you a
BIG BREAK in finding 3 of the 9 letterboxes. HINT: each of
the 3 locations of the Madison County Public Libraries has
a letterbox hidden somewhere on site.
So, are you up for the challenge? Should you choose to
ACCEPT YOUR MISSION, and you turn in your LOGBOOK
with the impressions from the 9 letterboxing sites, we’ll
enter your name in a drawing to win a BIG PRIZE!!!
Just sign up for the letterboxing activity at any of the 3
Madison County Public Libraries. We’ll give you the clues
to follow and equip you with some needed supplies:
Your very own family letterboxing STAMP
An INKPAD
Your family LOGBOOK for collecting 9 letterbox stamps
Oh, and don’t forget the CLUES!
What do you think? Are you ready for an adventure?
Special thanks to our generous sponsors: Blue Heron Whitewater, French
Broad Adventures, and Sandy Bottom Trails
FAMILY OUTDOOR ADVENTURE
LETTERBOXING Grab the Whole Family and Go Have Some Fun!
Fun Fact:
Although letterboxing
dates back to 1854 in
England, did you know
that the VERY FIRST
letterbox in the United
States was placed right
here in Madison County at
Max Patch Mountain in
April 1998?
That’s just so cool! Are
you up for the challenge?
Grand Prizes: Enter to win
1 of 3 whitewater and
horseback riding trips for a
family of 4. FUN, huh?
