First of all a massive thank you to all students and staff for their fundraising efforts today in memory of Jenny Scott, our former Deputy Headteacher. I am pleased to announce that we have raised over £1,600, which is a fantastic testament to her and to our ethos of kindness. I would also like to thank Miss Christodoulou and her team of staff and helpers for the fantastic World Book Day events over the past week. Congratulations to all those who have taken part in various sporting and other events that have taken place and to those who have received Achievement Points. As always, students have embodied our ethos and represented the school positively. This week German students watched a performance in the Hall. You can read about this later in the newsletter. Students in the lower school completed assessments in the Hall, and we were impressed by their conduct and as ever students in Years 11, 12 and 13 are working hard towards their final exams. Congratulations to all students on their hard work and approach to learning. Have a fantastic weekend. Kind regards Ms B Honnor Headteacher World Book Day World Book Day was a giant, page-filled success! It was lovely to hear so many students talking about their favourite book, discussing famous literary characters and trying to match the teacher's name badge to their pair. Thank you very much to staff, students and parents for supporting a fantastic cause and, as always, thank you to our student librarians who are valued very much. Let us all continue to share the love for reading. Reading is power.

World Book Day

World Book Day was a giant, page-filled success! It was lovely to hear so many students talking about their favourite book, discussing famous literary characters and trying to match the teacher's name badge to their pair. Thank you very much to staff, students and parents for supporting a fantastic cause and, as always, thank you to our student librarians who are valued very much. Onatti Theatre Company performance The Modern Foreign Languages Department, arranged this week for the Onatti Theatre Company to perform a play in German to our students studying German from years 8 to 10. The two German actors performed multiple roles in a fast-paced play about a terrible hotel, which is visited by a criminal. A hilarious play with many funny mix-ups, performed superbly and completely in German. There were over 150 Marriotts’ students who attended the performances with some assisting on stage to help the crew out. Everybody listened carefully and understood the plot. Some students even got out of their seats in the excitement. It was lovely to be able to bring language learning to life and to see the amazement in students who could not believe that they can understand a whole play in a foreign language. There are also French and Spanish performances due to take place over the next few weeks. We look forward to taking part in those too!

Word of the Week As part of the school's drive to advance the reading skills of every student we are focusing on broadening vocabulary by teaching key academic words explicitly in class. To support this, we have introduced a 'Word of the Week' (WoW) that features key, high-frequency words used by all faculties across the school. The aim is to use these words as much as possible to ensure that the precise meaning is embedded to allow students to use these words in academic writing and talk in their subjects. Please support your child and the school by using this word at home and challenging your child to use it accurately. The WoW for w/c Monday 9th March is: final

Definition: That which is last or forms and end

o E.g., All will be revealed in the final chapter of the novel.

Sport Year 7 Girls Football On Thursday the Year 7 Girls Football team participated in the U12's Girls Football tournament. The team were outstanding and showed resilience and enthusiasm throughout, despite facing tough opposition. The first game was a dominant display against Thomas Alleynes, with our girls confidently controlling the game to win 3-0. The second game proved more challenging, with a strong Hitchin Girls team, despite our best efforts the game resulted in a 1-0 loss. The girls continued to demonstrate resilience against a difficult Nobel for their third game, displaying a strong defence and outstanding goalkeeping, resulting in a 0-0 draw. In the final game against St Chris, the girls showed an incredible attacking display, leading to a 6-0 win!! Congratulations to the Year 7 team who were placed 3rd overall: Daniela, Amba, Amelie, Scarlett, Katie, Chloe and Emily Year 7 North Herts Schools Basketball A Division Marriotts 21 – 18 Thomas Alleynes The Year 7 team capped off an outstanding first season of basketball with a final victory against a strong Thomas Alleynes side. The team showed great resilience and effort to hold on to their slim lead throughout the game and defended every attack confidently until the final second. The boys finished the season with 5 wins and only one close loss, which looks likely to put the team a strong second in the league, and they have selected to play in the first set A division in Year 8. Man of the match performance for Toby who was an attacking force throughout the game and was convincingly voted for by the team. Congratulations and well done to; Matas, Handitt, Max, Toby, Samuel, Henry, JV, Luke, Kasie, Leyton and Sam.

Year 8 Boys Football Chancellor 2 - Marriotts 0

Our Year 8 boys travelled to Potters Bar on Wednesday to play Chancellors School, a school who historically have a strong pedigree in football. Conditions were poor, heavy rain and a boggy pitch with grass up to Denis' knees in some areas, but the boys were superb and matched Chancellors to 0-0 at half time. Max unfortunately had to come off at half time and that left a big hole up front and we soon surrendered two goals from our own mistakes. With a shuffle of formation, we went on to give Chancellors more of a game again and were very unlucky not to get something out of the game by creating some excellent chances, but we were thwarted by their exceptional goalkeeper several times. Notable performances were the back three of Albert, Ronnie and Dominic. Another industrious display form Leon, but Man of the Match was Denis, who made countless brilliant tackles. We would like to congratulate the team: Freddie, Denis, Max, Albert, Rhys, Ronnie, Luke, Harrison, Dominic, Jack, Leon, Callum, Ryan and Owen. Sixth Form Football Team The Sixth Form Football Team continued their 100% record this season with a win against Monks Walk in the County League game. The game finished 7-2 with goals from: Sam (Capt.), 2 from joint top scorer and an amazing 4 from winger Lewis (he could have got 6+). The team have done the school very proud this year and are on target for 3 Cup Finals after already reaching the County Cup Final. They are one game away from being in the District League Final and a few more results away from County League success also. The game vs Monks Walk just showed the strength and depth of the team. With a few key players missing, the boys were still 3-0 up at half time. There was a lapse of concentration for a 15-minute spell where Marriotts allowed Monks Walk to claw two back. This kicked the Marriotts boys back into gear and they replied with a quick four goals shortly after from Lewis. In rainy conditions, the team worked hard and again showed great ability to seal the win. Next up, Richard Hale away in the county league on Wednesday 11th.
