Classic Marque is the official magazine of the Jaguar Drivers Club of South Australia.

The magazine is produced calendar monthly with the exception of January.

The Deadline for all copy is the last Tuesday of each month.

Here we are in Mad March again.

Traffic in the city is chaotic with detours, roadworks, Fringe events and Clipsal all happening.

All British Day was very successful. Weather was good and the ovals were lush and green setting off our vehicles nicely. Once again we were one of the larger club displays with 53 vehicles registered. Bristol being the featured marque had a magnificent display of 31 vehicles with the event coinciding with their National Rally.

Some of you may have seen my Jaguar XK8 at All British Day. As part of the Clipsal Event there will be a display of “Vehicles from the Silver Screen”. As part of that display they have vinyl wrapped my car in the Union Jack to look like the Jaguar XK8 from the Austin Powers Movie “Gold member”. It certainly stands out! The good news is that it can all be peeled off when we need.

I am looking forward to the Queensland National Rally in April. This will be the first National Rally without Concours so it will be very interesting particularly as we will be following this format in 2018. Our next planning meeting for the 2018 National Rally will be held in March so if you are interested in being part of the organising group please give me a call or email and I will keep you informed of meeting dates etc.

Our Guest Speaker for the March meeting will be Stephen Marshall and I hope to see you there.

As per a recent market report, Tata Motor is going to display more than 25 cars at the much awaited Delhi Auto Expo, which will be held in the next month. This is the widest range of vehicles to be displayed at the event by any automak-er ever. This list includes productions spec as well as concepts in the passenger and commercial range along with Jaguar Land Rover models. In the last five years, Tata Motors has been suffering a setback and hence now it's planning to formulate a new strategy so as to bring in large sales volume in the next few years.

Club Torque EDITORIAL

Well, you have not heard from me for

some time so far as an editorial is concerned. The interesting part about that is that I have not heard anyone complaining. Make of that what you will.

In this edition I have introduced a new addition called “The Bottom Line” (maybe someone can come up with a better tag). The idea is to use this section of the magazine for short bits of Jaguar news and information, or even club news and comment could be included.

If you come across anything by way of a brief news bit please let me know by email. A photo is always good.

I want to thank members who have supplied me with stories for CM. Please keep them coming during 2016. In particular I want to hear member’s Jaguar stories—tell us how and why you bought your first Jaguar, what you have now and any interesting stories along the way. These will be used in the “Members Pride” section and are very much appreciated by members.

Sue and I were invited to the grand opening of the new Solitaire showrooms on Belair Road at Hawthorne. This was also the official Adelaide launch of the new XF Jaguar. It was a good night and with approximately 200 guests I suspect a very successful night for Solitaire.

The new XF is a magnificent machine and I would have loved to have had the opportunity to at least sit in it for a minute or two and enjoy the ambience and comfort first hand. Why did I not do this? Because some very insensitive and rude people chose to sit in the car sipping on their

champagne for most of the night. I was tempted to ask them to shove off and give others a turn, but thought better of it. I will make a private visit during the week.

On a personal note, I am delighted to have my S Type back on the road after being laid-up for two years. It is a bit like Christmas come all over again.

I have included a brief story in this edition of CM. I would like to thank Steve Manuel of Price Alexander Motors for his expertise and his patience with a very frustrated and impatient customer. I have known Steve for many years and more than anything value his professionalism and attention to detail.

JAGUAR LAND ROVER WITH THREE AWARDS The 40th edition of the competition Best Cars with the votes of readers of the magazine Auto Motor and Sport, Jaguar Land Rover received three awards and achieved four podium places in the classes for imported cars The all-new Jaguar XF won an impressive 40.2% of the votes in class “imported cars – a large sedan” A resounding victory with a big lead over second placed car Maserati Ghibli with 26.1% and ranked third Volvo V70 / XC70 with 10.9%. Jaguar XE continues its last year success , again won first place in the category of “middle class” with 22.3% of the vote of the readers.

Business Arising From Previous Meeting: NIL

Welfare: President, Di Adamson informed the meeting of the passing of Don Evans (member of 20 years standing) and read a message from Don’s wife, Margaret. Di also reported that Tim White was recovering well from his recent hip replacement operation.

Presidents Report: ABD is in two weeks ’ time. Bill Jones will be taking his GT40 to ABD.

National Rally planning meeting to be held shortly. More volunteers required and planners for the Post Rally Tours.

The McLaren Vale Vintage and Classic venue for JDCSA will be Serafinos.

Vice President Report: Julian welcomed all and passed on his New Year Greetings. A preliminary date for Jaguar Day has been set for 16 October at Elder Park in the city.

His daughter was married the previous Saturday and used the XK120 which had been put back on the road after a 40 year rest. His daughter was most impressed.

th anniversary proposal

(Peter asked for member anecdotes on memorable moments), National Rally Reports, NRM updates, Writers winners to be confirmed (and announced at the 2016 Rally), trophy rationalisation and ACJC future direction. Peter spoke to each topic where appropriate.

MSCA: Barry Kitts advised a twilight meeting and super sprint will be held on 20 and 21 Feb.

A meeting of volunteers for Adelaide Clipsal 500 has been held and the AGP is an upcoming event in Melbourne.

Related an amusing story while travelling to a National Rally some years ago.

Ian Pascoe advised SA Water has agreed to fund the Museum at Cobdogla for 5 years. The Humphrey Pump has been cleared to be put back in service with two minor outstanding safety needs. Hoped to running 21 May and this will be confirmed in March.

A run has been planned to the Riverland and Marg Thomas is arranging accommodation to be held. Members should ring the Loxton Hotel direct and mention they are from the JDCSA when booking (discount on Sat and Sun nights).

Di advised a guest speaker, Steven Marshall, has been organised for the March General Meeting.

THE BOTTOM LINE Souped-up Jaguar F-Type SVR looks likely to get four-wheel drive, 567bhp and a 200mph top speed A sales brochure revealing the Jaguar F-Type SVR has been leaked online, giving us our first look at Jag's range-topping sports car. The SVR badge means it has been developed by Jaguar Land Rover's Special Vehicle Operations department, and the brochure indicates that it will feature the same 567bhp 5.0-litre V8 engine as the limited-edition Project 7. It will be the first Jaguar to wear the SVR badge. Thanks to the powerful V8 with 700Nm of torque, an eight-speed automatic gearbox and all-wheel drive, the F-Type SVR will go from 0-62mph in 3.7 seconds.

Trevor Norley XJ6 bought off Gum Tree. WA car. Took it to Stepney Auto and it seem the car is not too bad. Drove it to Mildura and the accelerator stuck coming home.

JAGUAR RETURNS TO LE MANS: Excitement levels are building for the second season of the Jaguar Classic Challenge as the Le Mans Classic is confirmed for inclusion in the all-new race calendar for 2016. The Le Mans Classic will be one of the major highlights of the forthcoming season that will see a diverse field of pre-1966 Jaguars going wheel-to-wheel in the competitive single-marque series.

Jaguar has a long and successful history at Le Mans, with the marque first winning there back in 1951 with Peter Walker and Peter Whitehead driving the C-type – affectionately known as XKC 003

MULTI VALVE REGISTER—AUSTRALIA DAY AT SOUTH LAKES GOOLWA 26th JANUARY 2016

Thirty nine Multivalvers arrived in nineteen of Britain’s finest, and enjoyed the fine temperate climate at Ron & Claire’s Holiday House.

Jaguars parked on the front lawn, Multivalvers settled on the back lawn under the big tree.

Great Company, great food and refreshments were enjoyed by all.

Lesley entertained us with a Jaguar Poem.

Judy & Ray tested us with an Australia day quiz – recognising Australian Business Logos- present and past.

Jaguar For Sale Last morning as I read the paper In search of a new set of wheels The Classifieds had a most curious ad In their listing of automobiles.

I gazed with suspicious amazement At what seemed a wild stroke of luck Jag coupe it said, Low mileage, bright red, 97 model, $65 bucks.

Well, I was used to my newspaper’s headlines But I phoned up that number straight away “That jaguar, pet, have you sold that car yet?” “No, you’re my first call today.”

I said, “There must be a mistake in the paper, They’ve got the price wrong somehow,” “Oh no,” said she, “They got that price from me,” I said “Don’t sell, I’m leaving now.”

She lived in that part of the city I’ve ventured just one time or two, Where lawyers, bank presidents and doctors are residents And the houses are massive and new.

As I turned up her half mile driveway There, in the heat of the day, In the sunlight it gleamed, the car of my dreams, Only 65 dollars away.

Now the interior was done in white leather It had a 4 litre, fuel injected V8 Two good sized doors, five on the floor, And an 8 stack, 8 deck, solid state.

There was chrome on the chrome on the bumpers, In an aerodynamic design, A bar, a TV, and it was boggling to me That for 65 bucks it was mine!

Now, I was sure that this lady was crazy For selling this car at that price, As she walked down the lane she seemed perfectly sane, She was charming, and really quite nice.

Now, she smiled with such great satisfaction As she handed me papers and keys, I said, “I’ve just got to know, why you let this car go So cheaply. Won’t you tell me, p-l-e-a-s-e?

“Well” she said, “I’ll be sixty a week next Tuesday, I’ve lived here with my husband Earl, And after 40 years wed, and without a word said, He ran off with a curvy young girl.”

“But with his credit cards left here behind him, I knew he wouldn’t get far, Last night from Canberra he sent an email to me, It said: I need money my dear, sell the car.”

When I am Old When I'm an old lady, I'll live with each kid, And bring so much happiness just as they did. I want to pay back all the joy they've provided. Returning each deed! Oh, they'll be so excited! When I'm an old lady and live with my kids.

I'll write on the walls with reds, whites and blues, And I'll bounce on the furniture wearing my shoes. I'll drink from the carton and then leave it out. I'll stuff all the toilets and oh, how they'll shout! When I'm an old lady and live with my kids.

Australians to bypass car dealers and import direct. This will apply to new and almost-new cars under changes announced by the federal government. Legal restrictions will be removed to allow drivers to buy a new car once every two years, providing it is no more than 12 months old and has no more than 500km on the odometer.

The changes will apply from 2018, when local car manufacturing is scheduled to end, and according to the Australian Automotive Association, will push prices down. Buyers will save up to 20% on the new car purchase.

The government will also change the rules for importing used classic and collectible cars to allow them to be brought into Australia if they are at least 25 years old or are on a register of specialist and enthusiast vehicles. The Cat’s Giggle

Three sisters age 92, 94 and 96 live in a house together. One night the 96 year old draws a bath, puts her foot in and pauses. She yells down the stairs, "Was I getting in or out of the bath?" The 94 year old yells back, "I don't know, I'll come up and see." She starts up the stairs and pauses, then she yells, "Was I going up the stairs or coming down?" The 92 year old was sitting at the kitchen table having tea listening to her sisters. She shakes her head and says, "I sure hope I never get that forgetful." She knocks on wood for good measure. She then yells, "I'll come up and help both of you as soon as I see who's at the door."

It was raining hard and a big puddle had formed in front of the little Irish pub. An old

man stood beside the puddle holding a stick with a string on the end and jiggled it up

and down in the water.

A curious gentleman asked what he was doing. 'Fishing,' replied the old man. 'Poor old bugger'

thought the gentleman, so he invited the old man to have a drink in the pub.

Feeling he should start some conversa-tion while they were sipping their whisky, the

gentleman asked,

'And how many have you caught today?'

'You're the eighth.'

Jaguar Classifieds FOR SALE --- 1976 Jaguar XJS V12 manual

This original factory manual car was the 77th out of 352 early RHD V12 coupes. The JDHT certificate states the car was built on the 21st April 1976 ( the Queen's 50th birthday ) and delivered new to Henley's Limited in Bournemouth , England.

The original colour was Signal Red and the interior was Black Leather trim . The car came to Australia fairly early in its life . I purchased it in June 2002 from a friend ( who sold for serious health reasons ) soon after a "back to bare metal " restoration had been mostly completed .

The engine , brakes , driveline and rear end had been fully overhauled to better than new and a fresh acrylic paint job applied . This has never been polished and is now very well cured ! The interior trim , bumpers and other bits and pieces came with the car as well as many spare parts ( bonnet , boot , lhs door and mudguards from a donor car ) . This car was to be a " lightweight " track day special and the air conditioning is removed .The fuel system was to be high octane LPG , to which end the distributor has been recalibrated and an 80 litre gas tank installed in the boot in place of the original tank. An extra roller bearing is installed at the distributor base for longevity and high revs. ( anything in excess of 6,500 rpms )

Due to work and family commitments since then , the car has remained stored ( off the ground and covered in my dry garage ) since 2002 . My wife and I are now retiring and downsizing so there is no room for this

very interesting piece of Jaguar history. There are many more details and a multitude of parts ( choice of wheels ) which can go with the car . The hard work is probably about 80 % done and this represents a great opportunity for someone who appreciates the collectability of this quite rare Jaguar ( especially as I expect very few would have survived ) .The value of the restored original engine and gearbox alone is significant . An ideal restoration project just waiting for the keen XJS enthusiast to complete . There are several extras to go with the car , in particular a set of later model fibereglass bumpers from GWS . XJC 1977 White with Black vinyl roof. currently unpainted. Full set (5) Jaguar (dunlop) wire wheels with splined hubs. The details of the completed work to date are as follows.

Ground up restoration of the body. All work performed by English trained Jag mechanic with 20 years experience in restoration. Vehicle was set on a jig to ensure it was level and not bent. New sills from UK were imported and fitted followed by the entire floor being removed from behind the pedals to behind the rear seat. Floor donated from Series I swb Rear Wheel arch repair pieces as well as taillight pieces installed. All kits from UK. Doors rehung with military grade hinge pins. All work is visible as the body is unpainted. No front guards supplied.

All suspension was rebuilt including all bushes, tie rods, shock absorbers replaced. Ball joints rebuilt using factory parts. Gearbox rebuilt to as new std. Carbys and cold start valves also restored. Radiator recored with copper core. All interior (blue leather) is complete.

It was quite late in the day at 57 years old when I first became involved with my 1939 SS 1 ½ L Jaguar, but for the purpose of the story I will start from a time much before the Jaguar as I did have quite a few motor vehicles which set the scene for me to eventually become a Jaguar Man.

This story is presented in 2 Parts-

1.1. Becoming a Shed Man.

It started back in Port Pirie in the 1940’s and 1950’s. My farther was an Electrical Engineer and shed man and I followed as a young shed man. I was introduced to things mechanical, crystal-set radios, electrical gadgets, cycles etc.

1.2. Becoming a Motor Cyclist.

During my School ‘Leaving’ year at Port Pirie High School in 1956, I had an occasion to ride a friend’s Royal Enfield 250cc motor cycle. I felt quite at home being 15 years old. By 1957 I had moved to Whyalla to take a Trainee-ship with the BHP owned Whyalla Shipyard to study Naval Architecture. After two years I bought a Norton ES2 500cc single motorcycle which served me for many years.

In 1960 I bought an MG TF 1500 Sports Car. It was beautiful and only used it on fine weather days. I rode the Norton to work. I swapped the TF for an MGA 1500 in 1962. By 1963 I had graduated & after a stint at parachuting I felt the need to race motor cycles so I bought the late Laurie Boulton’s Norton 500 cc long-stroke Manx racing machine running on Castrol R lubricating Oil.

I was restless after 6 years of study.

The MGA 1500 was a bit gutless for towing a trailer with two motorcycles and gear, so in 1964 I bought my first new car, a British Racing Green MGB Mk1. Once fitted with a tow-bar my mate Buck & I raced at McNamara Park (Mt Gambia),

Calder Raceway & Mallala. I managed a 5th place in the

1965 Australian GP at Calder.

Still restless I sold up and sailed to England via Greece and Italy to London and very soon bought another Norton ES2 to take me to the Isle Of Man for the 1965 TT as a Pilgrimage. I rode to most of the English famous racing circuits and several speedway tracks and continued my studies in London.

In 1966 I had arranged to have shipped out to Australia a new Greeves 250cc Silverston road-racer prior to returning to the Whyalla Shipyard in October.

Met Marg soon after my return to the social scene.

Very busy times earning good money at the Shipyard and I soon bought a 1964 Triumph TR4A which was much better for towing the loaded trailer with two racing machines plus gear having overdrive on 3

th gears & more grunt.

With a married friend Malcolm riding a 250cc Yamaha Racer the four of us attended the regular Mc Namara Park and Mallala Race meetings plus the practice meetings at Mallala. It was a great time period. I managed a 2

nd in the

1967 SA Lightweight GP.

Early 1969 Marg and I decided to get married, sold the Greeves & bought a Bultaco Matador Enduro machine for the exact same price as Marg’s engagement ring as that seemed fair!

The Bultaco could do observed-section trials, scramble, grass track, cross- country and was road registered, but none to the degree needed, so I swapped that for a new Bultaco Sherpa a pukka Trials machine & competed around SA with some success.

With a baby on the way early 1971 the Triumph had to go after happy years courting in it, so I changed that for a Holden Station Wagon. By 1974 we had two children when I accepted a 2-year position with the Malta Dry Docks and we sold-up.

For fanciful financial security I bought a 1946 BSA 600 cc M21 motor cycle plus a 1929 Graham truck! both of which I arranged to have stored near Whyalla whilst we were away for what we thought was to be 2 years.

We lived in Mosta. For work I had a little Yamaha & I helped to form the new Malta Motor Cycle Club for Scrambles & Trials. I rode for the Malta Suzuki Team.

I managed to get hold of a 1941 BSA M20 Military motorcycle ‘found’ when some underground garages, sealed since the end of the War, were opened. It is not to be restored. I still ride that machine in it’s un-restored condition.

We had a Duty-Free Volvo 164E & when my contract expired July 1976 we drove with the children to England to take my new job which included a company car. The Volvo was swapped for a Volkswagen Beetle.

By that time the Whyalla Shipyard and the entire Australian Shipbuilding Industry had folded so returning to Australia was no longer a career option. I immediately bought a Suzuki Champion Trials replica machine which I rode throughout Southern England for 5 years

We returned to Australia late 1981 to Port Lincoln, bought a sidecar for the M21 which Marg and I rode in local Club events plus six Bay to Birdwood Runs and the Kernawek Lowender events.

We had a couple of Ford family cars.

1.3. Becoming a Car Man.

As one of the inaugural members of the Port Lincoln Vehicle Club together with Ross Gogler, in 1995 I started to think about getting a car to restore and looked at several vehicles over the next few years without success nor me having any fixed idea of a suitable make or condition.

In 1997 we decided to move to Adelaide for business reasons. We ran a private Marine Surveying and Claim Investigation company.

My old motor cycle racing mate, now remarried and a keen member of the Chrysler Restorers Club with a 1924 Dodge

Bros Ute called me to advise that one of his Club Members wanted to sell an early Jaguar.

1.4. Becoming a Jaguar Man.

During one of my regular business trips to Adelaide I ‘inspected’ it being offered as a 1 ½ L Jaguar sedan in very poor condition but mostly complete. I agreed to buy it without having any comprehension of what was involved.

My brother agreed to dismantle it here in Adelaide while Marg and I began the process of moving house and business from Port Lincoln to Adelaide, September 1997.

I joined the Vintage and Veteran Motor Cycle Club and rode regularly while I attended the long, difficult and expensive project of 100% restoration. It did not take me long to realize the Jaguar was a 1939 build SS Jaguar 1 ½ L Built by SS Cars Ltd in July 1939, but it had a 1946 Jaguar engine.

I Joined the JDCSA early 1998 and obviously went straight to the SS Register whose members have continued to inspire and help me as well as a new social experience which we enjoy.

1.5 The Rebuild.

As I mentioned above the car was a mess in every respect and I started a 10 year project just to get it running with considerable help from SS Register members.

Bruce Fletcher was my technical advisor, who also did the wiring and windows plus other guidance. Bob Lynch reproduced the new dash front panel.

Basically I finished with a pretty good and technically sound vehicle.

I had the motor and gearbox over-hauled by a mechanic who moon-lighted at his home.

The first time I ran out of money, Marg offered me a loan provided she chose the paint colour. (the original colour was black with bone upholstery. (why anybody would send a black car with bone interior to Australia defies me).

I bought many different spray cans of paint & tried them on old body panels but Marg vetoed them so we jointly visited every new car showroom in the Eastern suburbs. Walking in to Solitaire Motors one day she spotted a beautiful Bentley painted ‘Silver Tempest”. “THAT IS IT”, she announced, no further visits, no further discussion, end of subject. I am now proud of the choice despite it not being an original SS Jaguar colour, that seemed fair.
