It was quite a cold blustery day when we rang for the wedding of Sally & Adie at Stratton

Strawless but at least it was dry. This was our first wedding of the year and the band came from Coltishall, Buxton & Stratton, so very much a combined effort, but good to hear those bells ringing out after the service led by the Reverend Christopher Engelsen.

Monday 29th March we held our AGM and the existing officers were very happy to continue for another year. The Tower Captain then suggested that we consider having a Ringing Master as they do in Australia, and also parts of the UK it was thought a very good idea and Mike Gander was proposed and carried

unanimously, He had been approached before hand and was very pleased to accept this new position, being an experienced ringer of long standing. This year there certainly is a lot of events in the pipe line, such as Queen’s Birthday, St.George’s Day etc., apart from several more weddings, so watch this space!

On March 30th we had visitors ringing at St.John’s called the Oxford Society of Change Ringers, there were over thirty of them having arrived in a coach, so we made them very welcome and they rang for about three quarters of an hour doing various methods. Having lunched at the Red Lion they were off to Felmingham, Aylsham, and then down south to the Ipswich area.

Off we go into April with a group called the Oxford Diocesan Guild Tour of Norfolk 2016. They arrived in Coltishall before 10 a.m. and actually started ringing at 10 a.m attempting a Peal consisting of seven different surprise methods, having warmed up with a short touch of

Cambridge. They rang for almost three hours and of course completed the Peal with no problems at all.

They gave us a letter saying “Thank you for your time and trouble to enable us to ring at your tower, we are most grateful, please accept the enclosed donation to your tower.” So very well done and do come again, you are always very welcome.

So until next time enjoy your ringing -

Broadland Chess Club has won the National Club Championships Plate after entering the tournament for the first time. The Broadland team comprising Roy Hughes, Gerald Moore, Karthik Saravanan and Paul Badger competed in the Major section (average grade under 175) of the tournament, which was held in Birmingham on April 9th and 10th. A slow start on the Saturday saw Broadland draw 2-2 with Wanstead and Woodford and lose 1½-2½ to the DHSS. This qualified Broadland for the Plate competition, which on the Sunday they won after beating Braunstone 3-1 and drawing 2-2 with Sutton Coldfield.

In another success, Broadland Chess Club has won the East Anglian Chess Union Clubs’ Championships. The tournament was held on April 3rd in Newmarket, where top seeds Linton (Cambridgeshire) were the early leaders. Broadland overtook them in the late stages, however, to record a third win in four years. A key moment in Broadland’s success came when Broadland’s top board, Kamil Przybyla, won an exciting game against David Coleman, Linton’s top board. The Broadland team was

Kamil Przybyla, Roy Hughes, Andrew Brett and Stephen Pullinger.

Broadland Chess Club meets at the King’s Head in Coltishall (NR12 7EA) at 19:30 on Mondays and Wednesdays. For more information contact club secretary Paul Badger on 01603 737572 or at [email protected], visit https://sites.google.com/site/broadlandchessclub/ or find us on Facebook.

Wroxham Barns is proud to once again play host to the British Minigolf Association, with the 2016 British Open Championships taking place over the weekend of 7 th and 8 th May, attracting top ranking UK players from the world of Minigolf as they compete to become the new British Open Champion as well as crowning the British Youth, Woman and Senior

Champions. Although visitors won’t be able to play the course during the weekend while the Championships are taking place, they will be welcome to come along and watch to catch some of the action taking place on the 18 hole Championship course. This exciting national competition will be preceded on the evening of Friday 6 th May by a charity Pro-Am evening run by the BMGA and the players to raise funds for Macmillan Cancer Support offering a great opportunity to play a round of minigolf with some of the leading players in the country and get insider knowledge from the best of the best on how to play each of the 18 holes on the course to impress family and friends. Teams of 3 amateurs and one BMGA player will play a round under BMGA rules with instruction from their professional followed by a buffet meal and the chance to relax and chat with the players. Each team will pay £100 for the evening and are asked to seek additional sponsorship to help raise funds for this very worthwhile cause. Players don’t need to be an experienced golfer to take part and can bring along spectators to cheer them on as well as purchase additional guest tickets for the post-match buffet. Details are on the Wroxham Barns website, together with an application and sponsorship form or contact Wroxham Barns on 01603 783762 e-mail [email protected] .Ian Russell, owner of the popular visitor attraction at Wroxham Barns, said “We’re delighted to host the BMGA British Open Championships at Wroxham Barns and look forward to a great weekend seeing some of the best British Minigolfers in action on the course. Plus of course we hope to raise lots of money for Macmillan Cancer Support with a full-house of teams for our Pro-Am evening which should be a lot of fun”.The Championship Mini Adventure 18 hole course at Wroxham Barns was opened in 2008 by the GB Golf Team and has 18 original holes, all very different and with their own challenges. Fitted with an all-weather, true-rolling putting surface and smooth borders, it rewards accurate putting and cleverly played rebound

shots. Fairway features include gentle slopes and undulations as well as water hazards, bridge and other obstacles. The site has been landscaped with rockeries and has a ‘rushing’ watercourse with a central fountain and waterfall. The course is designed to British Minigolf Association standards and is DDA (Disability Discrimination Act) compliant.Cancer is probably the toughest thing that most of us will ever face and each year around 9,000 people across Norfolk and Suffolk will be told they have the disease. As diagnosis and treatment improve and the population ages, the number of people needing Macmillan’s help grows. Your help and support is vital to help them provide support every step of the way to families affected by this disease.

Gardening Tips for the Month of May

This April has really excelled itself with daffodils and

tulips. I’ve certainly had a good, colourful display.

● As and when your bulbs go over, deadhead

them and let the goodness go back into the

bulbs. When the leaves die right down, pull

them off.

● Once the polyanthus and primroses have

flowered, deadhead and, if desired, you can

divide them up.

● Also, cut back aubrietia and yellow alyssum after

it’s flowered.

● Your perennials should be growing well, hoe

regularly around them and stake when

necessary.

● When your forsythia, flowering currant and

viburnum tinus have finished flowering, prune

them back.

● Also, deadhead your hydrangeas.

● Tie in any new growth on your wall shrubs and

climbers.

● Your lawns should be growing well now. Trim

them regularly. If you haven’t fed them and

they’re looking a little yellow, give them a feed.

Treat weeds with a selective weed killer and

keep the edges trimmed.

● In the veg garden, broad beans should be

growing well.

● Early potatoes will be showing their heads, once

big enough mound them up with an iron rake.

● Sow lettuce, radish, spring onions, peas,

beetroot and main crop carrots.

● Sow French and runner beans in cell trays, or if

you prefer, straight into the ground.

● If you haven’t already, put up shading in the

greenhouse.

● At the end of the month, clear any spring

bedding like pansies and violas. Lift tulips.

● Check your pots and containers for vine weevil

and remove any snails.

● Prepare any ground or containers ready for

summer bedding.

● Watch out for late frosts and protect any tender

plants.

● With the pond, clean pumps and filters

regularly. Add new fish if desired and feed daily.

Make sure the water level is kept topped up.

This is a great but busy time of year, just enjoy it

Making time to stand and stare”

Do you love people watching? I do! Last week Dave and I went up to London to meet up with my siblings and cousins. Dave and I ate our lunch watching the boats on the river, and after that strolled over Tower Bridge, and along the south bank of the Thames. We passed HMS Belfast, The Globe Theatre, Tate Modern and National Theatre. Along the embankment were so many people; sitting, strolling, running, watching and talking in the April sunshine. Several street artists entertained us. One made me stop in my tracks. The most enormous bubbles were blowing above our heads, delicate rainbow balls changing shape as the wind carried them away. I took a photo. Then I watched. A man with a simple washing up bowl filled with bubbly liquid and a homemade rope with loops tied between 2 poles skilfully produced enormous delicate bubbles for our delight, and to his satisfaction. I was fascinated to watch how differently people responded; some didn’t notice, others looked and kept going, and others stopped. A little girl stood still, staring expectantly for the next explosion of liquid rainbow bubbles. She was in the moment! And she was showered with them! The man gave, and she received. A simple cultural exchange. Would you have made the time to stand and stare?

This month there will be a unique chance to make the time to stand and stare at some wonderful musicians and dancers! During May half term the Nandana Dance Lanka Group of Sri Lanka is coming to the Badersfield community! Their teacher Nandana dreamed of bringing them over to perform here. What a wonderful opportunity for us who live in this small community in a relatively rurally isolated area to experience a very different culture close up. These dancers will offer us their creativity, which can only enrich our lives. Our communities are places where we are gradually learning to embrace other traditions and to learn from them. Our Church is part of this community and is pleased to host 2 ticketed Sri Lankan Dinners with performance, and offering all age dance and drum workshops. An open air Sri Lankan Festival free to all local communities will round off their visit. We have so much to be thankful for here. Let’s offer them a generous welcome and enjoy the experience! And take the time to stand and stare!

With love

Dear Friends

‘”Say one for me, Vicar.’ People often say this to me. It is

a request to pray for them. Sometimes it is said in a

light hearted way, but often there is a serious need

behind it”We all need to be prayed for, vicars included. For believers , it makes a big difference if they pray to God about a situation –be it asking for the Lord to guide our path in life, give us strength, help us in times of trouble, or to give thanks for what is good.We can all pray, if we want to. Prayer is not confined to clergy and official religious people.

So –following the invitation of the Archbishop of Canterbury to everyone to pray- I invite all in our parishes to join in a ‘ Wave of Prayer’ in the week

leading up to Pentecost Sunday (Whitsun) 8th May to the 15th May. The churches will be open for all to call in for a few minutes or half an hour or an hour (whatever suits you) just to sit down for a moment and pray. You don’t have to say or do anything in particular-but what we can do is:

Pray for five people (friends, family ,anyone) that they may know God’s love and peace.

You don’t need to tell anyone who you are praying for-it is between you and God.Pray the Lord’s Prayer –there will be sheets with the words on and also some other prayers and helps.

Just ‘be’ in the presence of the Lord. This time of year in the Church is a special time for prayer as we remember how Jesus died and rose again so we can be at one with God, and how Jesus after completing his work on earth was taken up into the glory of his Father (The Ascension) and how God sent his Holy Spirit to fill our hearts and lives with his glorious presence and love. Jesus told his disciples to wait and to pray for that Spirit to be given to them-as a gift. He is is gift to you and I as well. Let us pray to receive that gift –which gives new life to our communities and to the Church.

So do join in the ‘Wave of Prayer’. We want that wave to flow through all our parish churches during the week of 8th to the 15th May by each church dedicating a day in the week for prayer. You can just drop in (or sign up on the sheet at back of church for your time you can pray). These are the days:

Monday 9th May 10am-5pm Coltishall Church,

Tuesday 10th May Horstead Church 10am to 5pm,

Wednesday 11th May Frettenham Church 10am to 5pm,

Thursday 12th May Hainford Church 10am to 5pm,

Friday 13th May Stratton Strawless Church 11am to 5pm.

We are making our wave of prayer with Broad Grace Church. All welcome to pray in any of the churches, and to come to any of our Pentecost services when we give thanks for the Holy Spirit.-see ‘Worship in the Benefice.’ Do contact me for further information or if you would like to talk about prayer and the Christian Faith.

There will be a Christina Aid Collection for helping that charity with its work in improving the lot of victims of natural disasters and developing health

and well being around the world, on Saturday 14th May during the day outside Roys in Hoveton.

With my prayers and All good wishes and prayers Christopher
