LED efficacy

What to check on LED system efficacy

• Efficacy of the LED chips is always greater than

the efficacy of an LED lamp or fixture, so when

comparing LED products, always look at the full

lamp or luminaire system data.

• LED manufacturers may test their LED chips

on lab benches at room temperature with

short pulses that produce a high efficacy that

cannot be achieved in practical use. This does

not reflect the typical expected output of LED

sources integrated into lamps or fixtures.

One major benefit of LED sources is their high efficacy - the light output given per unit of input energy, often shown as lumens per watt (lm/W).

Although percentages vary, it is not

uncommon to see efficacy losses of 40-50%,

as shown in the diagram below.

lumen measurements on the test results

of their LED source suppliers. Instead, they

use independent, third-party testing labs

to measure and validate the output of their

lighting fixtures according to test conditions

spelled out in the LM-79 standard.

What to ask for:• Ask for total system power consumption data including drivers;• Ask for photometric measurements of the output and light distribution of the fixture and conditions

under which the fixtures have been measured;• Find out the LED lamps or fixture’s performance at the ambient conditions

of your required application.
