Studying a major in Marketing is a really eye-opening and challenging experience. So many of the units have been practical and forward-thinking – they make you analyse business problems in a new way and think outside the box. I’m currently working part time in a marketing role for a company called WalkMe. I’ve been able to apply a lot of what I’m learning to that role, and I’m looking forward to transitioning into it full time when I graduate. Noam JacobyBachelor of Commerce/Bachelor of Arts. Why study marketing? The impact that marketing decisions have on the net worth of a business cannot be understated. Today’s employers expect graduates to analyse, reason and solve problems from multiple perspectives – skills that are vital for a career in marketing. Completion of a Bachelor of Marketing degree, or business or commerce degree with a major in marketing, develops those professional attributes that employers are demanding of graduates who aspire to senior marketing and management roles early in their professional career.

“After completing a marketing degree in 2014 I am now working in London with Samsung. Before securing a permanent role with Samsung I successfully applied to become a Global Digital Consumer Engagement Trainee at Microsoft in London for six months. I’m passionate about consumer insight, brand strategy, mobile and digital innovation in the technology sector.

During my studies at Monash I enrolled in the marketing internship unit which required me to seek out, and apply for, a marketing internship with a company I wanted to work for. That first internship as a Digital Strategy Intern with a full service digital agency gave me the opportunity to apply theory to practice. It also gave me much valuable work experience to include in my resume. After that first internship I actively pursued other part-time and full-time internship opportunities with Saatchi & Saatchi and Heritage Brands to build my experience and resume.

My fourth and last internship was in China. The Department of Marketing advertised the internship (paid) with Volkswagen Group on its Facebook page. My application was successful and I found myself in Volkswagen’s office in Beijing working on brand management and strategy with two other Monash alumni.”

“In December 2012 I completed a double degree Bachelor of Commerce and Bachelor of Arts majoring in Marketing and Japanese. Throughout my studies I was involved in a range of student activities, and through the Monash Marketing Internship unit I interned in the Marketing and Community Engagement Department at Central Highlands Water. As part of the internship I organised a large community day and helped on a range of marketing communications. It was a great learning curve, but I realised that after six years of working at Coles, my strengths were in the FMCG industry. I currently work in the Customer Insights team at IRI-Aztec Information Services where we help our FMCG clients to understand shopper behaviour and grow their sales.

Through the Tony Palmer-Monash Marketing Award, which I received and the end of my final year at Monash, I was fortunate to be mentored by Tony Palmer, President of Global Brands and Innovation at Kimberly-Clark Corporation in Texas. Tony has given me incredible insight into Marketing at an executive level and assisted me in setting goals for my career beyond Monash.”
