This is the biggest Seafood Show in Japan and it was organized by Seafood Show Secretariat/Exhibition Technologies Inc and endorsed by Japan Fisheries Association. MPEDA had taken a built up stall of 18 Sq. mt. area for participation in the show. M/s Gadre Marine Exports Pvt. Ltd., Ratnagiri and M/s Moon Fishery (India) Pvt. Ltd., Cochin also participated in the show by taking 18 sq.m. area respectively and showcased products from India. Inauguration The show was inaugurated at 10 AM on 21-7-2010. Mr. Shirasu, President of Japan Fisheries Association gave an opening address. As in earlier years the inaugural ribbon cutting ceremony was conducted by officials/representatives of the participating countries. Exhibitors from 15 countries viz., USA, Italy, India, Australia, Korea, Thailand, Taiwan, China, Norway, Papua New Guinea, Bahrain, Vietnam, Malaysia and Mexico participated in the Expo including Japan. Exhibition Exhibition was arranged in Tokyo International Exhibition Centre, Tokyo, Big Sight – East Hall No.5. There were around 430 exhibitors (350 domestic and 80 overseas) with 500 booths. M/s Alaskan Seafood Marketing Institute, M/s Nuri Fishery Association Co Ltd., Korea, Fisheries Development Authority of Malaysia, Papua New Guinea National Fishery Authority, Vietnam Association of exporters and Producers, M/s Southern United Seafood Australia Pvt. Ltd., etc., had put up stalls in the show. Various seafood companies from China, Vietnam, Thailand etc. had put up group of stalls in their national pavilions. Visitors to MPEDA stall The stalls of the MPEDA and Indian companies were located in a prominent location near the entrance. MPEDA stall exhibited various value added products of Shrimp, Cuttle fish, Squid, Octopus, Fish pickles, seafood curries, Shrimp biriyani, Tuna flakes in pouches as well as Canned tuna. Bifold and trifold brochures and recipe booklets in Japanese language attracted many visitors. Representatives of major Japanese companies like M/s Okaya & Co. Ltd., M/s Oka Foods, M/s L & Cozy Ltd., M/s Kaneki Suisan Co Ltd., M/s Kaiei Suisan Co. Ltd., M/s Miyakawa & Co Ltd, M/s Nihon Three M. Co. Ltd., and others visited MPEDA stall. Mr. Kato san of CGC and Mr. Toshihito Hirai of M/s Aeon Inc supermarkets also visited MPEDA booth and held discussions regarding importing directly from India. Mr. Ryu Kawasaki and Ms Junko Kawamura editors of Minato Shinbun and Susian Keizai also visited our stall. About 44 trade enquiries were received during the show. The main interest was for BT shrimps, stretched shrimp, Cuttlefish, Squid, Octopus, Lobster, Yellow Clam, Frozen fish, Fresh water fish, Chilled fish and Vannamei shrimp. Confederation of Indian Industryhas organized their 2nd edition of

Processed Food-Advantage India-2010, “Positioning India as a Foodfactory of the world” at Hotel TajPalace, New Delhi on 30 – 31, August2010. The main objective of theprogramme was to bring both buyersfrom overseas countries and sellersfrom Indian market together tounderstand their requirements in theprocessed food sector. Representativesfrom 40 countries and businessdelegates from 52 Indian companieshad participated in the event.

MPEDA showcased value addedseafood products like ready to eat/ready to cook items, pickles, AFDshrimps and dried fish. Geography and PopulationUkraine has a strategic position in

Eastern Europe, bordering the BlackSea in the south, Moldova andRomania in the south-west Poland,Slovakia and Hungary in the west,Belarus in the north and Russia in theeast.

The northern part of theCarpathian Mountains reaches intoUkraine in the western part of thecountry, but most of its area is takenup by the steppe-like region just northof the Black Sea. Ukraine is dividedalmost in half by the Dnipro river,which traverses Ukraine north tosouth. It is joined by the Black Sea,which is west of the Crimea and nearthe mouths of the Bug and the Dnisterrivers. The border with Russia is thelongest and runs through the Sea ofAzov. The population of Ukraine is46,500,000 as of mid 2007.

Sector OverviewThe Ukrainian market has

witnessed a significant increase indemand for fish and seafood products.

Profile of fish and seafood sector - UkraineThis increase was caused by strongincome growth, as well as a reductionin import duties for fishery products.

In 2006, total foreign trade(imports and exports) of fish andseafood amounted to US$470 millionwith the dominant share beingimported products - 96% (US$452.2million). Market capacity fluctuatesbetween 6,50,000 – 7,00,000 tonnes.Ukraine provides only 1/3 of itsneeded fish supply from domesticsources (sea, river and pond). Theaverage annual fish and seafood percapita consumption in Ukraine is now14 - 15 kg of which 2.5 - 3.0 kg arecanned products (about 60%domestic). Experts indicate that theannual potential demand in Ukrainefor fish and fish products is about 1million tonnes.

Consumption patterns are shiftingfrom herring (which is the traditionalproduct of choice) towards moreexpensive, higher quality seafoodproducts, opening a new nichemarkets for foreign suppliers of hake,salmon, shrimp and sardines. The

rapidly developing domesticprocessing industry has restructuredin recent years and is currentlydemanding more frozen fish,crabmeat, squid and scallops forfurther processing.

Domestic supplies of fish aregenerally caught within the 200-mileeconomic zone of other countries(66%), in the economic zone ofUkraine (27%), from fresh water (7%)or produced locally from aquaculture.Ukraine only has access to the Blackand Azov seas which contain a verylimited number of fish species that aresuitable for commercial fishing. Localspecies are well known to Ukrainianconsumers, but they are of low qualityand often not suitable for processing.These factors along with thedecreasing fish and seafood catchmake the Ukrainian fish market moreand more dependent on imported fishand seafood products.

equipment amortization,unsatisfactory prices, the tax andcredit policy of the state, as well as thelow solvency of the population. Theproduction of salted, smoked anddried fish remains at a level of 30-35,000 tonnes per year with 50% ofsuch fish produced at smallenterprises.

In contrast, the canned fishsegment of the market enjoyed positiveresults at the end of 2006 despite theproblems with raw materials.According to Ukrainian statistics, theleading product group among cannedfish belongs to what could beconsidered ‘original’ products -herring, sardines, kilkas(Clupeonella), mackerel and salmon -which made up 73% of production or74,900 tonnes; crab sticks and variousfish snacks (pâté, butter) followed at15% (15,600 tonnes); and preserves,trout liver and canned fish andvegetable food mixes accounted for thebalance of about 10% (10,200 tonnes).

The reduction of the fishing fleetof Ukraine has been acute and reflectsthe lack of domestic ship building.Generally, existing fishing vesselowners are unable to build new shipsdue to lack of available financing.Ukraine does not maintain aprotectionist policy for its own fleet.Ship owners are left to their ownmeans to deal with ship upgrading,increased fuel costs, and fishinglicences. Fishermen are expected topay customs duties for the fish theycatch and register it as though it weredelivered from abroad. This is bothtime consuming and expensive,presenting a major disincentive for thedomestic fishing industry. Lack offinancing for fish industry programsis another reason for the industry’sdecline. All of these factors contributeto the reduction in the Ukrainianocean fleet and the decrease in oceancatch.

Fish imports to Ukraine aregrowing steadily. The main foreignfish suppliers of Ukraine are Norway,

Iceland, the Baltic States, Canada andRussia. In 2006, nearly 332,000 mtof fish and seafood (fresh, chilled,frozen dried, smoked) were importedinto Ukraine, an increase of 80,000mt from 2005 amounting to $361.13mn USD. Norway and Iceland areUkraine’s main suppliers of herringfillets. The US, Canada, andArgentina supplied 38,000 mt of hake,while Denmark and Estonia shipped8,000 mt of shrimp, and Norway andChile — 2,500 mt of salmon. India’sexports to Ukraine is negligiblysmaller. India’s exports to Ukraine forthe last five years is given below:

fillets, vacuum packed pink salmonsteaks, sockeye salmon fillets, liveoysters, live lobster, smoked mackereland smoked herring.

While imported fish are soldmostly frozen (99% of all imports), themarket for chilled imported fish isdeveloping rapidly. Currently, most ofthe fish that are marked as “chilled”premium quality and displayed on icein supermarkets and specialty storesare imported frozen and defrostedprior to display. The main reasons forthis practice are the lengthy veterinaryclearance procedures and anunwillingness of Ukrainian

The products that are identified forexports to Ukraine as well as transferprocessing technology are coldwatershrimp in brine, frozen cooked andpeeled shrimp in vacuum packs,frozen cooked shell-on shrimp,vacuum packed blue mussel meats,Pacific hake (heavy glaze, shatterpackfillets, and H&G,T), IQF redfish

consumers to pay significantly higherprices for what is seen as onlymarginally higher quality fish.

Currently, there are about 20 largefish importers in Ukraine importingover 10,000 tonnes of fish annually,over a dozen mid-sized companiesimporting 1000-1500 tonnes a year, aswell as hundreds of smaller importing

companies in the 10-100 tonne range.The biggest Ukrainian fish importersinclude International Seafood Group,Alaska Trade, Delfin, Scandinavia,Agama-Trade JSC, Admiral, BaltiaTrade House, Lypova Dolyna,Rybnoye Mesto, Seafoods, andCaravan Fish.

Competition in the Ukrainian fishand seafood market is strong. AsUkraine supplies only 1/3 of theneeded quantity of fish products frominternal sources and the domestic fishindustry is on the decline, Ukrainewill remain an import dependent statefor fish and seafood products for theforeseeable future. The main competitorsin this market remain companies fromCanada, Norway, Iceland, USA, theBaltic States, and Russia

Market and Sector Challenges(Strengths and Weaknesses)

In August 2005, Ukraine droppedthe fixed minimum per kilogram dutyrate after import duties were reduced.Charged in euros, fixed rate dutieswere the major reason why asignificant portion of imports wentthrough the “grey market”. For themajority of less expensive frozen fishproducts the import duty is now zeroor between 2% to 5% of CIF value.Import duties for seafood products

were fixed at 10%. In addition toimport duties, all importers arerequired to pay a 20% value-added-tax(VAT), as well as expenses associatedwith currency conversion (1% Pensionfund tax and 0.7% banking fee).Imports of all types of fish are subjectto certification. For chilled fish, thismay become a significant problemsince the certification procedurerequires up to 7 business days. With ashelf life of only 10-12 calendar days,this long clearance procedure isbecoming a huge obstacle forimporters of chilled fish products.

Exporters should be aware thatUkrainian standards are rather strictand imported fish in some cases maybe declared unwholesome. The oldstandards include very short shelf lifelimits for some products which, inturn, may cause trade disruptions andproduct detention at the border.

Currently, Ukrainian authoritiesrequire the following documents fromfish importing/exporting companies:Certificate of Origin (issued by aproducer/exporter), ConformityCertificate, a Veterinary Certificate forevery allotment and QuarantineCertificate for packaging for productsof plant origin.

The market entry strategyrecommended for first time suppliers

is to work through an established localimporter. Ukraine is a country wherepersonal relationships takeprecedence and import operations arehighly bureaucratic and timeconsuming. Due to frequent changesin Ukrainian legislation, non-transparent customs clearance rulesand expensive and complicatedveterinary procedures, it isrecommended to work through a localdistributor/importer who knows howto operate within the system.Ukrainian importers are alsoresponsible for the entire logisticschain, inland transportation anddistribution.

Direct sale to a reputed distributoris the most reliable route to dobusiness in the Ukrainian foodproducts market. Joint ventures mayalso be considered but it is necessary,as in most markets, to carry outdetailed due diligence in advance ofany agreement. Companies that areseriously considering entering thismarket should consider making afamiliarization visit. Companiesentering the Ukrainian market arestrongly recommended to pay closeattention to where, when, how andwhether they will be paid.

It is felt that MPEDA’s continuedparticipation in few of the trade fairsheld in the Middle East is essential to

MPEDA’s Participation in upcoming International Eventsconsolidate India’s existing marketand introduce value-added consumerpacks in the Gulf markets. Dubai isfast developing as a hub for exports ofseafood to Middle East and othercountries. A large ethnic populationof India and other Asian countriesmake Middle East a ‘natural market’for Indian seafood. The significantchange in the eating habits of peoplein the Middle East and theirpreference for white meat in place ofred meat also makes the Gulf marketan ideal market for India. Consideringall these aspects, MPEDA has been

It is oneof the most important food fairs inthe world conducted in alternateyears. France is one of the leadingmarkets for Indian seafood products,especially cephalopods and frozenshrimp. The fair focusses on variousfood products such as ingredients,additives, dairy products & eggs, fresh

Considering theexcellent response received in theprevious fairs, this year also MPEDAis participating in the DubaiInternational Seafood & FisheriesExpo, to be held between 25-27,October 2010 for which MPEDA hasalready booked a space of 18 sq.m.area.

3) China Fisheries andSeafood Expo, Dalian - 2-4,November, 2010

Participation in the Chinese Expogives exposure to Chinese market andother South East Asian countries likeSingapore, Hong Kong etc. China isfast emerging as a huge market forIndian marine products as the seasaround China have been depleted offishery resources due to over fishing.Major items of export to China arelow value fishes like ribbon fish,croakers etc. There is also demand for

other varieties such as fin fishes andcephalopods. China is also the leadingnation in aquaculture developmentand there is a scope to learn a lot fordiversifying the culture practices inIndia and gain leverage in producionof aqua cultured species. Therefore, inorder to strengthen India’s existingmarket and to generate markets fornew products, as in the previous years,this time also MPEDA is participatingin the China Fisheries and SeafoodExpo, 2010 to be held during 2-4,November, 2010. An area of 18 sq.m.has been booked for MPEDA’sparticipation.

4) Busan InternationalSeafood & Fisheries Expo,Korea–18-20, Nov. 2010

The Korean fishery sector is facingsevere challenges due to depletingresources, environmentaldeterioration etc., and is therefore, notable to meet the growing domestic

demand for seafood and this will helpseafood exporting countries like Indiato capture a major share of the Koreanseafood market. The consumption ofseafood in Korea has increased since1991 and per capita consumpton in2006 had reached 53.4 kg/year. Thegrowth of Korean economy in the lastcouple of years has been spectacular.Frozen fish constitute major item ofIndia’s export to Korea.The countryis also one of India’s leading seafoodbuyers. inaugurated the two day advanced

training on ‘Post Harvest Techniques

for Ornamental fish for Export’ at

Integrated Rural Technology Center

(IRTC), Mundur, Palakkad. The

training was organized by Marine

Products Export Development

Authority (MPEDA) in association

with United Nations Conference on

Trade and Development (UNCTAD)

during 30-31, August 2010. In his

inaugural address Shri Ramesh

highlighted the role and assistance

given by MPEDA in developing the

export oriented ornamental fish sector

in the country. He stressed the

importance of ornamental fish culture

in rural upliftment and women

empowerment. The efforts taken by

MPEDA in making the Indian

ornamental fish sector to

International Standards by

implementing the scheme of Rainbow

Revolution were also highlighted.

The programme was presided over

by Shri V K Dey, former coordinator

INFOFISH. He gave a brief on the

history of ornamental fish culture and

its importance as a livelihood activity.

Pulimugham Hatcheries, Alappuzha

gave lecture on harvesting, holding,

sorting/grading & conditioning of

ornamental fishes. He also handled

practical sessions on packaging of

ornamental fishes.

Participants were grouped into

four teams for conducting the

practical sessions. The result of

packaging and water quality were

discussed in detail. Higher packing

densities using various anaesthetics

and ammonia arresters were

demonstrated.

Interaction Session and Major

Highlights

Shri N Ramesh, Director (M) had

a brief interaction with ornamental

fish breeders and answered various

queries. He also assured continuous

support of MPEDA in the

development of the sector. However,

the issues regarding the Kerala state

rules, high electricity and freight

charges etc., needed to be discussed

in detail with state and central

governments. He also highlighted the

importance of forward and backward

linkages for developing a successful

ornamental fish export sector in the

country and assured MPEDA’s

assistance for the same.

Ornamental fish breeders

on issues concerning Inland Fishery

FIRMA order for registration, Foreign

technology, Broodstock import,

marketing linkages, upgradation of

existing units into higher grade (eg.

grade II to grade III), continuous

support and monitoring by MPEDA,

high electricity charges and assistance

to farmers in sorting out issues

affecting the ornamental fish sector.

It was informed that the bill was a

State subject. Regarding registration

of ornamental fish farms by MPEDA,

it was informed that the same will be

considered after discussion with other

stake holders.

Assistanace were also extended to

the farmers to bring in foreign

commercial breeding techniques with

the help of expert ornamental fish

breeders from abroad and also assist

in establishing marketing linkages so

that fishes will be collected directly

from farms and also for import of high

quality broodstock of ornamental

fishes by MPEDA. Upgradation to

existing units needs to be addressed;

however it’s not coming under the

purview of present scheme. Suitable

amendments to the scheme are

required for the same.

To the question of establishing

district wise ornamental fish

collection centers, Director(M) said

that strengthening of farmers

association/societies is the best way for

developing collection centers.

Exporters also can be encouraged to

set up/develop collection centers in

various parts of the state.

Establishment of Ornamental Fish

Marketing Societies (OFMS) in every

district will solve the problem to a

certain extent.

To the request of the farmers/

breeders for the continuous and

overall support and monitoring of the

sector by MPEDA, Director (M)

assured that the issue will be

considered. He also highlighted the

importance of strengthening forward

and backward linkages for export

oriented production.

Establishment of OFTC

(Ornamental Fish Training Center)

can act as a resource center.

Continuous monitoring of the

existing breeding units require more

manpower. Presently more than 100

farms are established under the

present scheme in various parts of

Kerala apart from the 424 units

established under the previous

schemes.

The farmers/breeders requested

the intervention of MPEDA for

reducing the electricity tariffs to the

level of agricultural sector. Director

(Marketing) advised them to submit

suitable representation so that

MPEDA will forward the same to the

concerned Ministry/Department with

due recommendation.

The genus Vibrios includes morethan 92 species, mostly marine in

origin, and its taxonomy iscontinuously updated because of theaddition of new species. This groupof bacteria is frequently reportednotorious due to its ability to causedisease in human. Previous studiesand researches have focused oncholera Vibrios because of the severityof the disease they produce, but overthe last decade, several studies haveinvolved relatively minor Vibriospecies of medical interest, some ofwhich are described as pathogens thatcause severe human diseases. Centerfor Food Safety and Applied Nutrition(CFSAN), Food and DrugAdministration (FDA). Food andAgriculture Organization (FAO) andWorld Health Organization (WHO)of the United Nations have conductedseveral studies on this genus since thenand found that it can even kill humandue to ingestion of Vibrio infectedseafood. The genus is present inalmost all countries, but many of thedisease outbreaks were reported in theSouthasian countries. Shellfishes andwater are the major sources of vibrios.

Vibrio species are commonlyisolated from marine or brackish waterbodies as well as fish and crustaceans.WHO assessed and published thereports on the risk of V.cholerae,V.parahaemolyticus and V.vulnificus

isolated from such sources.

Vibrio as a human pathogenIn Japan, V. parahaemolyticus is one

of the most common causes of foodpoisoning, due to the Japanesepredilection for sushi. In the USA,food poisoning caused by thisbacterium is primarily associated witheating oysters. V. vulnificus is alsoassociated with oyster eating, and thisbacterium causes the greatest numberof deaths in the USA. Woundinfections caused by Vibrio specieswere reported from several countriesfrom northwestern Europe during thewarm summer of 2006. In Germany,three people were reported to havedeveloped V. vulnificus infections andV. cholerae reported from southeastSweden and Denmark in 2006. Thereare several reports suggesting thatV.parahaemolyticus was obtainedfrequently from Indian warm waters.

Recently, there are lot of Vibriosother than V.cholerae, V.parahamolyticus

and V.vulnificus reported in packed orprocessed seafood products.Previously V. fluvialis, V. hollisae, V.

mimicus, V. cincinnatiensis, V.

metschnikovii, V. furnissi and V.

alginolyticus were considered as minorpathogenic to human but the latestoutbreaks are pointing out that suchbacteria can also cause almost similardisease like that of V.cholerae and hence

the chromosomes of all sharecommon history. Vibrios will increasetheir population particularly in thewarm conditions. Therefore the

unhygienic handling andinappropriate storing of seafood willcause the contamination of theseparticular bacteria.

In the light of new reports,common Vibrios in seafood will growfaster when the temperature ariseswhere they are stored. Unhygienichandling by workers at landing centersand at processing plants may lead thepresence of vibrios since the bacteriumwill spread by the contaminated waterused by human.

Apart from human disease, vibriosplay major roles in health and ecologyof marine animals; including fish,mollusks, and corals. The diseasecaused by vibrios is known asVibriosis. The U.S. FDA has recentlyproposed mandatory implementationof PHP for oysters harvested from theGulf of Mexico in order to reduce thecontamination by V. vulnificus.

There are several vibrio-associatedinfections which are directly attributedto climate change. The averagesummer seawater temperatures inmany regions of the world regularlyexceeded 15 ºC and 20ºC, theminimum temperatures when V.

parahaemolyticus and V. vulnificus caseswere reported. As the seriousness ofthis pathogen is increased day by day,the FAO and WHO have decidedjointly to conduct an experts’ meetingthis year in support of thedevelopment of risk assessment toolsfor Vibrios spp. associated withseafood.

To create awareness in shrimpfarmers against abuse of

antibiotics/chemicals in aquaculture,MPEDA, RC(Aq), Bhuvaneswar hasorganised a “CAMPAIGN AGAINSTUSE OF ANTIBIOTICS INAQUACULTURE” at Bardhanpur,Balasore district on 30/07/2010 forthe benefit of the farmers, feed dealersand procuring agents of Bardhanpurand neighbouring areas. The venuewas the farm-house of Shri B.NPanda, Secretary, Orissa ShrimpFarmers Association (OSFA),Bardhanpur. Distinguished guestsnamely Sri Sadananda Mahapatra,Dist. Fishery Officer cum CEO,BFDA/FFDA, Balasore; Shri Sk.Kalesha, State Coordinator, NaCSA,and Sri B.N.Panda, Secretary, OrissaShrimp Farmers Association (Balasore region) participated in theprogramme. Sri U C Mahapatra, AD

(AQ) and Dr.D.Roy, Field Supervisorrepresented MPEDA.

Dr. D Roy, Field Supervisor,MPEDA, welcomed the officials andstated that due to rejection ofconsignments in the recent past by theEuropean Union and United States,Indian sea food export trade suffereda set back. To revive the reputation ofour aquaculture products there is aneed to produce antibiotic freeshrimp/scampi/fish products. He alsoemphasized upon the qualityassurance of the product by not usingany banned antibiotics/chemicalsdirectly or indirectly so as to ensurehazard free export of aquacultureproducts..

Shri Sadananda Mahapatra, DFOcum CEO, BFDA/FFDA, Balasorespoke on the guidelines of the CoastalAquaculture Authority. He stressedupon the adoption of best farmmanagement practices (BMPs) ratherthan the use of chemicals/antibioticsin aquaculture.

Shri U C Mahapatra, AssistantDirector (Aqua) spoke on the occasionand explained on cooperativeapproach to shrimp farming by

forming aqua societies and adoptBMPs instead of using antibiotics/chemicals. He explained BMPs throughpower point presentation and requestedthe farmers to maintain good soil/water quality, bio security measuresand keep their ponds disease free andreduce the production cost by notapplying feed additives/chemicals.

Sk. Kalesha, State Coordinator,NaCSA, emphasized upon theformation of cluster based societies indifferent shrimp farming areas.

Sri B.N. Panda, Secretary, OrissaShrimp Farmers Association (OSFA)(Balasore region) mentioned that mostof the shrimp farmers of Bardhanpurarea are either CAA registered orapplied for CAA registration. He alsomentioned that efforts will be takento cover up all the shrimp farmers forCAA registration. He stressed uponthe production of antibiotic freeshrimp/scampi by adopting BMPs andthereby avoid the use of antibiotics/chemicals in aquaculture. Leaflets onAntibiotics in Oriya vernacular weredistributed among farmers. Dr. D. Roy,Field Supervisor, MPEDA, RC (Aqua),Bhubaneswar proposed vote of thanks.

Reports on awareness campaigns against abuse ofantibiotics carried out by field centres

Government of India, through Ministry of Commerce and Industry, notified

the non-use of banned antibiotics in aquaculture. In this context, MPEDA

through its field centres regularly monitor the presence of banned

antibiotics/drugs through National Residue Control Monitoring

Programmes, pre-harvest testing of produce, and through monitoring the

quality of seeds, shrimp, scampi and feed. As part of this activity, the

aquaculture field centres conduct regular awareness campaigns against

abuse of antibiotics. Among the programmes conducted in various states,

a few are presented below:-

Wilson, Deputy Director(Aqua), MPEDA explained thefarmers on the quality consciousnessof overseas consumers and the EUdirectives for screening of samples offarm produce for antibiotic residues.Maintenance of quality of shrimp forexport trade is of prime importance.He suggested adoption of better farmmanagement practices (BMPs) insteadof antibiotics for disease-free andsustainable production which will inturn reduce cost of production.

Shri Ajoy Kumar Samal, JuniorFishery Officer, Dept. of Fisheries,Balasore spoke on the guidelines ofthe Coastal Aquaculture Authority(CAA) and requested the farmers to

register their farms with CAAand assured to extend all sortsof cooperation to do so.Shrimp produced by theunlicensed shrimp farmers willnot be purchased by exporters.He mentioned that statefisheries department has planto set up one laboratory inBalasore district to the benefitof the shrimp/scampi farmersto get their soil and waterparameters tested. There is alsoa plan to test shrimp/fish feed

to assess the efficacy of feed. Hestressed upon the adoption of bestfarm management practices ratherthan use of chemicals/antibiotics.

Sk. Kalesha, State Coordinator,NaCSA, explained the farmers thebenefits of cluster based shrimpculture to achieve good crop at lowproduction cost.

Sri D Raju, Field Manager,NaCSA, lucidly explained the BMPsinvolving least water exchange, lowstocking density and minimizingproduction cost. He explainedtechnical aspects on feedmanagement, soft/loose shellmanagement etc., and answered to fewproblems raised by the farmers. Headvised farmers to take up scientificfarming with hatchery-produced seedsafter PCR tests and also on diseasemanagement by using suitableprobiotics instead of antibiotics.

conducted a campaign on 29th July2010 in Kolad of Thalassery in Kannurdistrict. 20 farmers attended the

packets, containers and bags of all

inputs used for the presence of any

antibiotics and chemicals to ensure

that they are not used in their farms.

Farmers were requested to maintain

all relevant records for traceability

purpose.

Farmers were also informed about

the purpose and function of ELISA

labs. They were also requested to test

the shrimp samples in ELISA Lab

before selling their material to the

exporters, certifying that the shrimps

are free from antibiotics.

The Putimari village in South 24

Parganas is having 62 small and

marginal Scampi farmers doing

scampi farming as polyculture with

fresh water fishes like Cutla, Rohu,

Mrigal etc. It was proposed to conduct

a campaign in Putimari on the ill

effects of the use of banned antibiotics

and consequent problems being

faced by the aquaculture/export

industries in recent days. The

programme was conducted on 17/08/

2010 at Gachalia & Putimari Jagrata

Sangha Community Hall, Putimari,

South 24 Parganas.

Deputy Director (Aqua), MPEDA

welcomed the participants. He

requested the farmers to register their

farms with Coastal Aquaculture

Authority & State Fisheries

Department and obtain Pre Harvest

Test Certificate (PHTC) from ELISA

Lab before they sell their products. He

advised the farmers to adopt Better

Management Practices (BMPs) rather

than using antibiotics in shrimp farms

for sustainable and disease free shrimp

production. Various development

schemes of MPEDA were explained to

the farmers. During the meeting

leaf lets about list of banned

antibiotics, muddy moldy smell in

shrimp and MPEDA’s technical &

financial assistance schemes for

shrimp farmers were distributed to the

participants.

The meeting came to an end with

A 5-day Training Programme for

SC/ST beneficiaries on

“Adoption of Code of Practices for

antibiotic free shrimp production” was

conducted from 9 – 13, August 2010

for the benefit of SC/ST shrimp

farmers of Singiti area, Chandbali

Tahasil, Bhadrak District. 20 farmers

attended the programme. The

programme was arranged at the fish

collection centre belonging to Shri

B Das of Singiti, Bhadrak. Leaflets on

Standards of Inputs, adverse effect on

use of Antibiotics in Aquaculture,

CAA rules etc. in Oriya vernacular

and leaf lets on shrimp health

management were distributed among

farmers.

appreciated that a few farmers of the

region have already got CAA Licences

and some are yet to receive the licence

from CAA. He shared his experiences

with the farmers on the low stocking

and good price realization by using

only lime & feed as inputs and

avoiding chemicals & antibiotics in

shrimp farming. He also informed the

trainees regarding the schemes of

BFDA and NFDB for brackish water

aquaculture which could be utilized

for the benefit of shrimp farmers.

Sk Kalesha, State Coordinator,

NaCSA explained the role of NaCSA

in the field of aquaculture. He noted

with satisfaction good response from

the farmers of Singiti for the

formation of aqua society. Already

there are 6 societies in Balasore Dist

and few more societies are in the pipe

line in other Districts like Bhadrak,

Jagatsinghpur & Kendrapara, he said.

The inaugural session was followed

by training classes. The importance of

the training programme, site selection

& construction/maintenance of

shrimp farms, registration procedures,

legal aspects of shrimp farming and

matters concerning Aqua Society

formation and its benefits were

explained in the classes. On the

second day of the programme,

introduction to shrimp farming &

biological aspects of Tiger shrimp,

pond preparation, seed selection &

stocking and water/soil quality

management were explained to the

farmers by the MPEDA officials

through power point presentation.

On the third day, classes were taken

on nutrition management in aqua

farming, PCR analysis and other

pathological tests, effluent treatment

system and its importance etc and

adoption of BMPs & Health

Kochi: The Kerala Fisheriesand Ocean Sciences

University, the first of its kind inthe country, will start functioningby the end of this year, FisheriesMinister S Sarma has said.

“There should be no doubtabout the government’s intentionto set up the university with itsheadquarters in Kochi as even theCentre is keen on the proposal,though it initially had a confusionon where such a varsity should belocated,” Sarma said at a functionheld here.

“Kochi is the fishing capital ofthe country as 15 percent of thetotal 20 percent export from thestate is from here. Kerala’s exportof Rs 1.585 crore is also a recordin the country,” he said. Sarmasaid Kochi was the hub of thecentral fish research centres andhence it was necessary to developan academic support system hereto bring in more development inthe fisheries sector. Earlier, theminister inaugurated theVembanad Ladies Hostel and laidthe foundation stone for theswimming pool of the College ofFisheries, Panangad.

In his welcome address, KeralaAgricultural University ViceChancellor K R Vishwambharansaid two new M Sc integratedcourses in Biotechnology andClimate Adaptation had beenstarted.

He said that swimming was apart of the curriculum for fisheriesstudents. The Vice Chancellorexpressed the hope that theFisheries Department would lendfinancial support to help completethe third floor of the hostel.

Middle-aged and older men whoeat fish every day are less likely

than infrequent fish eaters to developa collection of risk factors for heartdisease, diabetes and stroke.

Metabolic syndrome refers to acollection of risk factors for diabetes,heart disease and stroke - includingabdominal obesity, high bloodpressure, high blood sugar, low HDLcholesterol and high triglycerides. Thesyndrome is typically diagnosed whena person has three or more of thesetraits, and doubles the risk of heartattack and stroke in those affected.

Past research has linked higher fishintake to a lower risk of someindividual components of metabolicsyndrome. Researchers studied 3,504Korean adults aged 40 to 69, toinvestigate the effect of fish and n-3fatty acid intake on the incidence ofmetabolic syndrome and theindividual risk factors for thesyndrome. All the individuals werefree from metabolic syndrome orcardiovascular disease. Data regardingthe body weight, lifestyle habits –smoking and exercise, and daily fishconsumption was collected from all

the participants.Of the 232 men who said they ate

fish every day, 29 (or about 12 percent)developed metabolic syndrome overthe next three years. Of the 190 menwho said they ate fish less than weekly,16 percent developed metabolicsyndrome. Men who had a serving offish each day were 57 percent less likelythan those who ate fish less than onceper week to develop metabolicsyndrome over the next three years.However, no benefit of eating fish wasseen among women.

The study shows that omega-3 fattyacids - found most abundantly in oilyfish like salmon, mackerel and tuna -have heart benefits. Also, omega-3fatty acids can lower triglycerides (atype of blood fat). Also, fish oilsupplements can help lower bloodpressure and reduce the risk of deathamong people with established heartdisease.

The study concludes thatconsumption of fish and omega-3 fattyacids significantly lowers the risk ofmetabolic syndrome among men, butnot among women.

up, what it says, the world’s first

investment trust specifically targeting

fisheries-related businesses worldwide

amid growing demand for fish in

many countries. The company said it

has judged that fishery-related

businesses will grow in the long term.

People in the United States and

Europe are becoming more health-

conscious while fish demand is also

expected to rise in emerging countries

amid economic growth, it said. ‘’We’d

like to attract customers who have not

been interested in investment funds,’’

a Nomura official said.

Nomura plans to assemble up to

140 billion yen through the fund

during the period upto to Aug. 19,

while Amundi Japan Ltd., a Japanese

unit of French asset management

company will manage the fund, the

major Japanese brokerage house said.

About 30 percent of the collected

funds is expected to be invested in

businesses in Japan, while around 40

percent would be invested in U.S.

firms, Nomura officials said. The

company also plans to invest in

companies in emerging economies

such as Thailand and Brazil, as well as

in Norway where fishing is a main

industry.

The fund will be invested in listed

companies that engage in fishing or

fish farming, as well as those which

make fishery-related goods such as

fishing gear and ship engines, the

officials said.

Companies in the food service

industry that serve seafood will also

be targeted for investment, they said.

It has been the biggest and mostcomprehensive attempt ever to

answer that age-old question: howmany fish are there in the sea?Published on 2 August, a 10-year studyof the diversity, distribution andabundance of life in the world’soceans, the Census of Marine Life(COML), estimates there are morethan 230,000 species in our oceans.The survey covers “from coast to theopen ocean, from the shallows to thedeep, from little things like microbesto large things such as fish andwhales,” said Patricia Miloslavich ofUniversidad Simon Bolivar,Venezuela, the co-senior scientist ofthe COML.

More than 360 scientists havespent the past decade surveying 25regions. The results show that arounda fifth of the world’s marine speciesare crustaceans such as crabs, lobsters,krill and barnacles. Add molluscs(squid and octopus) and fish

Chennai: Evolving an alternatelivelihood for fishing

communities in the State, the CentralMarine Fisheries Research Institute(CMFRI) Kovalam, Chennaisuccessfully harvested Asian Seabass,an edible fish commonly consumedin the State.

Speaking to reportersat the ‘harvest mela,’ Mr.G Syda Rao, Director ofCMFRI, said: “aftersuccessful demonstrationof open sea cage cultureof lobsters at Isukapalli inAndhra and Vairavankuppam inPulicat during 2009, we have reapeda good harvest of Asian Seabassthrough open sea cage farming, whichwas launched in February this year atKovalam.”

Earlier this week, the census ofmarine life was published,

concluding that there are more than230,000 species in our oceans. Andfor every marine species known toscience, at least four have yet to bediscovered.

For the layperson, two questionsspring to mind. First, how on earthdo you count all those fish? Second,how can scientists put a number onwhat Dick Cheney would call the“known unknowns”? Dr. Tom Webb,a marine ecologist at the Universityof Sheffield, northern England, whoworked on the census, says differentmethods are used to count marinespecies, but that it “often will comedown to some poor bloke in a labcounting things” — molluscs in mudsamples, plankton in seawatersamples. “For species in the North Seawe will use trawl surveys from thefishing industry,” he says. “With coralreefs in, say, Fiji we will use visualsurveys conducted by divers, whosimply count what they see in front ofthem. The Central Institute of FisheriesEducation (CIFE), Mumbai,

believes that Assam can become atop fish producer because ofphysical advantages and adoption ofnew technologies. The challenge isto make fish farmers embracecertain changes and protect theenvironment in which fish is reared.

The well-known facility that haspromoted fish production in thecountry and achieved a high rate ofsuccess has been providing necessaryinputs to the State Fisheriesdepartment and shaping a newapproach to enhance both thequantity and quality of fish produce.

According to Dr Dilip Kumar,Director, CIFE, “The time hascome for Assam to utilize its naturaladvantages. In very few other Statesdo we have such virgin water bodieswhere fish can be farmed with suchease.”

He believes that propertechnology made available in timewould certainly be a boost to fishfarmers. Some positive trends havealready been observed, and withmore fish farmers embracing newknowledge and skills the State willwitness a rapid rise in production.

In Guwahati to launch the firstfreshwater prawn hatchery, DrKumar said that freshwater prawnwill become a key income generatorto farmers of the State. “There is ahuge demand for prawn not just inthis region, but also in Bangladesh.The fish farmers could easilymultiply their income by raisingprawn along with some other fishtypes,” he remarked. Admitting great potential forfreshwater prawn cultivation inAssam, the senior scientist howevercautioned that aquaculture in theState would only bring in richharvests if the existing water bodiesare protected from pollutants.Pollution in natural water bodies hasbeen reported from several parts ofthe State, and consequently, fishfarmers have expressed theirconcerns.

“Fish are highly sensitive to thequality of their habitat, and it hasbeen seen that fertilisers used inagriculture and raw sewage affectthem to a very great extent,” DrKumar noted, and hoped thatAssam Government wouldrecognise this fact so that fishfarmers were not adversely affected.

On climate change and itsinfluence on aquaculture in Assam,he was circumspect, saying “a lot ofdata needs to be acquired beforeanything substantial can be saidabout the impact on climate changeon fish farming…” However, a riseof one or two degree in temperaturecould help the growth of some fishtypes which are in demand in theregion, he added.

Monday demanded compensation forwhat they claimed were huge losses totheir trade following the oil spilloutside Mumbai. they work and earn on a daily basis.The oil spillage has spelt doom fortheir trade and they are sitting at homesince three days,” association chiefDamodar Tandel said.

He has shot off a letter to ChiefMinister Ashok Chavan and districtauthorities demanding compensationfor the affected small fishermen whosetrade has been hit. ”As per the variousshipping laws in force, we are entitledto adequate compensation in theevent of losses to our trade arising outof factors like oil spill. Accordingly,we have sought compensation of Rs10,000 per month per small fishermantill the fishing activity normalises,”Tandel said.

Efforts are on to combat the oilspill spanning around two miles in theArabian Sea, three days afterPanamanian cargo carrier MSC Chitraand a St Kitts ship MV Khalijia-IIIcollided outside the Mumbai harbour,barely five km from south Mumbai.

The fishing community has takena 10-week break during the monsoonseason in view of the hazardous sailingconditions and also since it is breedingtime for the fish. But around 6,000small and marginal fishermencontinued to fish along the coast evenduring the monsoon to make endsmeet. Even after the fishing activityresumes from Aug 15, the communityhas apprehensions about the nearfuture in view of the oil spill.

Meanwhile, prices of sea productshave already hit the sky in differentfish markets around Mumbai whichare presently selling frozen stuff. Theprices of all-time favourites like prawnsand pomfrets has shown a three-to-fivefold hike in rates as compared to theprices last week, before the oil spill,with a cascading effect on the menurates in restaurants across the city.

There are around 800,000fishermen with more than 21,000huge fishing boats and another 6,000small fishermen with around 500small boats in the state.

The institute is alsooffering consultancy for thecommercial production of somevarieties.

Around 80 species of marine fishesare available in the internationalmarket and one needs to have thatnumber of varieties to compete in thebusiness. KAVIL is planning to enterinto strategic alliances with some ofthe exporting countries and train theKerala fishermen in sustainablecollection of these varieties from thewild, Mr. Nair said.

New Delhi: India will take up theissue of torture and attacks on

Tamil fishermen with Sri Lankanauthorities and ensure protective coverfor them as long as they do not strayinto Sri Lankan waters, ExternalAffairs Minister S.M. Krishna said.

“Both countries are working outbilateral institutional arrangementsfor ensuring the safety and security offishermen of both the countries andaddressing such issues in a humaneand practical way,” he said in the RajyaSabha.

While giving clarifications on hisstatement on a ‘Calling attentionmotion on the killing of Indianfishermen and continuous attack onthem by Sri Lankan Navy,’ Mr.Krishna claimed that the incidents ofapprehending Indian fishermen andfiring on them in the waters betweenIndia and Sri Lanka had come downsignificantly after the October 2008understanding on the issue.

“In 2008, 1,456 Indian fishermenwere apprehended by the Sri LankanNavy. In 2009, those apprehendedcame down to 127. In 2010, till end ofJuly this year, 26 fishermen wereapprehended. In 2008, the number offishermen reported killed was 5 with1 missing. In 2009, no fisherman waskilled or missing… It is, therefore,evident that the October 2008understanding has had a salutaryeffect on the situation,” he said.

Mr. Krishna said: “It is importantthat we sensitise our fishermen torespect the International MaritimeBoundary Line and not stray into theSri Lankan waters for their own safetyand security, especially in those areasdesignated as sensitive by theGovernment of Sri Lanka. We havealso conveyed a similar request to thegovernment of Sri Lanka vis-a-vis theirfishermen who cross the InternationalMaritime Boundary Line and enterour waters.”

Centre will take up fishermen’sissue with Sri Lanka: Krishna

He informed that the ferry servicebetween Rameswaram in Tamil Naduand Talaimannar (Sri Lanka) would beresumed following an agreementbetween the two countries.

Earlier, cutting across party lines,MPs in the Rajya Sabha urged theCentre to protect the rights of Tamilfishermen who were allegedly beingattacked and tortured by the SriLankan authorities. Members of theCongress, BJP, DMK, AIADMK andCPI asked the Centre to take up thematter with the Sri Lankangovernment strongly and take backKachchativu island for benefit ofIndian fishermen.

While Jayanthi Natarajan(Congress) asked the Centre to dealstrictly with Sri Lankan governmentfor humiliating and beating Indianfishermen, T. Siva (DMK) expressedconcern at attacks on Indian fishermen.

Kanimozhi (DMK) said whilefiring on fishermen might havestopped after the agreement betweenthe two countries, their torture andhumiliation continued and it was notright even if it took place in the SriLankan waters.

D. Raja (CPI) asked the Centre toreopen the Kachchativu agreementand raise it at the SAARC forum.“The Centre has been complacent andfailed to take up the issue proactively,”he alleged.

V. Maitreyan (AIADMK)demanded that the Centre take stepsto recover the Kachchativu island fromSri Lanka and demanded a guaranteeto fishermen’s life.

Quoting letters of Chief MinisterM. Karunanidhi to the Centralgovernment, M. Venkaiah Naidu (BJP)alleged that despite repeatedreminders by the State government,the Centre’s approach had been casualand insensitive to the plight of Indianfishermen.

Bhubaneswar: In a bid to put curbon irregular fishery practice and

check unsustainable method of fishingincluding shrimp culture insidefamous Chilka Lake, Orissa govt. willintroduce Chilka (regulation andfisheries) Bill-2010.

“The new act will regulate fisherypractice inside the lake and help ineliminating illegal practice,” Chiefminister Naveen Patnaik toldreporters after chairing the 10thgoverning body meeting of ChilkaDevelopment Authority (CDA). TheCDA would be given penal power topunish violators, he said adding withits implementation, people earningtheir livelihood from the lake wouldbe benefited.

This apart, considering thepotential of the lake, the stategovernment decided to set up a fisheryresource management plan (FRMP)for holistic management of the fisheryresources of the lake.

Official sources said thegovernment decided to set up anOrissa Wetland DevelopmentAuthority to preserve all the wetlandsin the state. Chilka (Regulation andFisheries) Act, 2010 is under scrutinyby the law department, the sourcessaid.

Besides, the governing bodymeeting decided to strengthenprimary fishermen cooperativesocieties and constitute ChilikaFishermen Central CooperativeSociety Limited. While dealing withfrequent violence over lease issue, thegoverning body suggested formationof a unified leasing system for properdemarcation on ground.

Reports said the fish netted in lakeduring 2009-10 was 11,955.37 metrictonnes. The market price of the fishduring the period was Rs 82.54 crore.The meeting decided to distributeinsulated ice-boxes to members of the104 primary fishermen cooperationsocieties.

The high-value agriculturalsegment, comprising livestock

and fisheries, has to show highergrowth for the farm sector to expandat a faster pace, the PlanningCommission has said.

The 11th Five-Year Plan (2007-2012) had set an average agriculturalgrowth target of 4 per cent. However,the mid-term appraisal of the planacknowledges that the average growthin agriculture will fall by 2-3 per cent.Though one of the obvious reasonsbeing cited for the shortfall is thedrought that hit foodgrain productionin 2009-10, the crop segment is stillexpected to grow by 2-3 per cent, closeto the projected estimate of 2.7 percent for the Plan period.

However, the livestock segment,which contributes 23.8 per cent to theentire agricultural growth rate, isexpected to fall significantly short ofthe projected average growth rate of 6per cent. Till 2009-10, the averagegrowth for this segment has been 4.1per cent. Fisheries, which had grownby 3.7 per cent in the 10th Plan periodis also expected to fall short of the 11thPlan period average growth projectionof 6 per cent.

“I think the real reason is thatinvestment in logistics like storage anddistribution has been quite limited.Though it has happened in somesectors, like milk, others, like meat,have lacked. What we need is betterinfrastructure at the retail marketinglevel,” said Shashanka Bhide, seniorfellow at the National Council ofApplied Economic Research.

Moreover, Bhide adds these sectorshave been considered “supplementary”and there are no incentives to turn tothese sectors, which are less profitablethan traditional farming of crops likewheat, rice and pulses.

The growth in the high-valuesegment has been declining even asthe demand for these products hasbeen on the rise. Analysts say in a high-

growth economy, the demand forhigh-value agricultural products seesa rise and this has been the case withIndia, too. The demand for livestockand allied products has increased atthe rate of 7 per cent every year, whilethe growth in production has beenslowing and is between 3 per cent and5 per cent.

This has, in turn, led these high-value food items like milk, meat, eggsand fish to have one of the mostconsistent and rapid inflation rates.Contrary to popular perception thatcereals, pulses and sugar have seen thesharpest increase in prices, it is animalhusbandry where the Wholesale PriceIndex (WPI) inf lation has beenconstantly pronounced.

“With growth in the overalleconomy, the demand for these (fooditems) has gone up much faster thanthe supply. I think we got trapped in amindset that the demand would beslower,” Planning CommissionPrincipal Advisor Pronab Sen told ina recent interaction.

Given the preoccupation ofaddressing food security concernsthrough the traditional foodgrainsegment, there is no policy frameworktill now to address the graduallydecelerating growth in the livestockand fisheries segments.

The mid-term appraisal notes thatcurrently “no Central assistance orschemes are available for the meatsector”. Moreover, it also observes howvalue addition in the meat sector hasbeen non-existent, especially in thedomestic market. Similarly, theproduction of marine fish has reachedstagnation and “there seems to be nofurther scope to increase theproduction”, while India still has thepotential to increase production in theindigenous fish segment throughmore active participation of theprivate sector.

About 20participants from different districts of‘ Ludhiana, Faridkot, Ferozepur andMohali ‘ attended the event.

Asha Dhawan, head, departmentof aquaculture, said, ‘Theenvironment in Punjab is very suitablefor the culture and breeding ofornamental fish species. So thisventure can be taken up and thetraders can produce the seed ofdifferent species locally and earnhandsome money.’

Kamaldeep Kaur, Dean, College ofFisheries, GADVASU, said it is anactivity, which not only providesaesthetic pleasure to the fish keeper,but also shows additional means offinancial gains.

The ornamental fish-keepingactivity that started as a hobby hasattained the stature of a very rewardingindustry. In India, there is a hugedemand for exotic ornamental fishes.The domestic market is worth aroundRs 500 million and the demand isincreasing at 20% annually. Indiacontributes only about 0.008% to theglobal trade, thus showing greatpotential, he informed.

‘The export from our country ismainly confined to freshwater varietiesfrom the natural resourcespredominantly from the northeasternstates. Ornamental fish breeding andculture is confined in and around themetro cities ‘ Mumbai, Kolkata andChennai,’ Dhawan added.

Director, Extension Education,GADVASU, K S Sandhu, suggestedthe participants adopt this venture onscientific lines. The training onornamental fish culture and breedingwould be a regular feature in thecoming years, he added.

Kochi: Seafood exports from Indiaare on a roll with demand picking

up in the US and European market,officials of the Seafood ExportersAssociation of India (SEAI) said.Exports have been aided by highercatch in India, which has alsocontributed in lowering domesticprices. The only concern of the $2-billion export target is the recentweakening of the dollar, which lowersexport realisation, according toMr.Anwar Hashim, national presidentof SEAI. “Betterlanding has helped inhigher exports.Landings of cuttlefish, squid and blacktiger prawns havebeen higher, whichhas also helped inlowering the domesticprice and in turnmaking uscompetitive at theglobal level,” he said.

Tr a d i t i o n a l l y ,exports are leanduring the months ofJune-August on account of trawlingban in coastal states during themonsoon. Mr.Hashim feels thatEuropean buyers and US are back ontrack and consumption is slowlyincreasing. “Exports of shrimps to theUS market are on a positive notedespite the fact the anti-dumping dutyhas increased after the fourth review.The customs bond has been waivedand exporters are returning to the USmarket,” he added.

India’s total seafood exports and USactions had a deleterious effect on thenumerous aquaculture farms spreadover coastal India.

The loss Indian seafood sufferedin the US market was more than madeup by higher trade with the West Asiaand South Asian countries. Exportsto west asian countries have increasedby 27% during the last one year whileSoutheast Asian countries haveimported 62% more during the lastfiscal.

Seafood exports from India haswitnessed a sharp increase of 22% inJuly. During the first four months ofFY 2010-11, marine exports stood at$638 million compared with $517.40million in the same period of lastfiscal. Exports to Japan, which hasvery high quality standards hasincreased significantly during theperiod. Volume of exports during thefirst quarter was higher by 47%, whilevalue has gone up by 30% for theperiod. Dollar realisation fromJapanese trade has increased by 41%during the period. Japan mostlyimports shrimps from India and thisis reflected in the growth of exportsthat was going through a difficultphase after problems in EU and USmarkets.
