Market Tote with Leather Straps

If you've been in search for the perfect tote, look no further than this DIY beauty! Sturdy fabric and timelessleather straps offer a fashionable and utilitarian style that can be used as a purse, or for trips to the grocerystore. Simply choose your favorite machine embroidery design to create a beautiful embellishment, thenstitch together as you follow along with our step-by-step project instructions.

Project Needs & Notes:

- 1 yard of sturdy fabric- 1 yard of lining- 1/2 yard of contrasting fabric- 1/8 yard thin fabric (for strap and wristlet)- Rivets- Embroidery thread- Temporary spray adhesive (such as Gunold KK100)- Embroidery thread- Scissors- Air erase pen- Masking tape or painter's tape- Medium weight cutaway stabilizer

Cut out two pieces of the exteriorfabric and two pieces of mediumweight cut away stabilizer thatmeasure 19" wide by 17" tall.

Spray one side of a piece ofcutaway stabilizer with temporaryadhesive. Smooth the stabilizeronto the wrong side of the frontfabric piece.

A template (or printout) of adesign is an excellent tool to helpwith placement. Print a templateof the design using anembroidery software. If you donot have embroidery software,Wilcom TrueSizer is a freeprogram to use.

With the aid of the template'salignment marks, mark all fourvertical and horizontal axes.

Extend the axis lines using aruler and air-erase pen to make iteasier to hoop accurately. Thenhoop the fabric and stabilizertogether tightly, lining up thedrawn axis lines with the markson the hoop.

Load the embroidery file onto themachine and secure the hoop inplace. Then move the needledirectly over the marked centerpoint on the fabric. Follow thecolor change sheet andembroider the design.

Once the embroidery hasfinished sewing, unhoop thedesign, but do not trim away theexcess stabilizer. The stabilizeron the back of the fabric will beused to support the sides of thetote. Follow the manufacturer’sdirections to remove the air-erasepen markings.



For the back piece, spray oneside of the second piece ofcutaway stabilizer with temporaryspray adhesive. Smooth this ontothe wrong side of the back fabricpiece.

To make the contrasting topbands, cut out two pieces ofcontrasting fabric so that theymeasure 20.5" wide by 3" tall.

Fold one long edge over by a1/2" with wrong sides together.Press the fold. This folded edgewill be the bottom edge the band.



Repeat to press one long edgeover by a 1/2" on the second topband.

Next, take one top band pieceand the front fabric piece. Matchup and pin the unfolded top edgeof the band to the top edge of thefront fabric piece. Repeat to pinthe second top band to the backpiece. Make sure the wrong sideof the band is against the rightside of the fabric so that the sewnseam is hidden.

With a 1/2" seam allowance, sewalong the top edge of the bandand front piece. This edge willremain raw until the lining isadded.



Repeat to sew a 1/2" seam alongthe top edge of the band and theback piece.

Once this is done, topstitch alongthe bottom, folded edge of thefront band with a 1/4" seamallowance.

Repeat the previous step for theback piece and topstitch a 1/4"seam across the bottom, foldededge of the back band.



Next, with right sides together,match up the front piece and theback piece. Make sure the topbands are matched up as well.Pin the pieces together along thebottom edge.

Sew across the pinned, bottomedge with a 1/2" seam allowance.

After the bottom is sewn, pin upboth the left and right sides.



Sew along both pinned sides witha 1/2" seam allowance. Makesure to leave the top edge of thebag open and unsewn.

With a ruler, measure 2 1/2" upfrom the bottom seam (not theedge of the fabric). Draw a linehere with an air-erase pen on thestabilizer side of the front piece.Make sure to draw all the wayfrom the right side to the left.

Repeat to draw the same line onthe stabilizer of the back piece aswell. Again draw 2 1/2" up fromthe seam and not the edge of thefabric.



Now fold the bag so one of theside seams matches up with thebottom seam starting at thecorner where they meet. Makesure the fabric is all flat. Use pinsto hold the seams in place oncethey match up.

When the tote is folded like this,the two lines that were drawnearlier should match up and be 5"across.

Pin the corner securely along thedrawn line.



Then sew directly on top of thatmarked line.

Repeat to fold the tote over andmatch the other side seam upwith the bottom seam. Make surethe drawn lines match up againand sew across the marked lines.

Trim off both corners along theseams, leaving at least 1/4" offabric.



Now it is time to make the lining.Cut two pieces out of the liningfabric that measure 19 1/2" wideby 19 inches tall. These pieceswill not have any stabilizerbacking them.

With the right sides together, pinthe bottom edges of the liner.

Sew along the pinned bottomedge with a 1/2" seam allowance.



After the bottom is sewn, pin andsew the side seams with a 1/2"seam allowance. Once again,leave the top edge open andunsewn.

We will be making the cornerseams just as we did earlier.

From the bottom seam (not thefabric edge), measure up 2 1/2"and draw a line on the wrongside of both the front and backpieces.

Repeat the same process asearlier to match up the sideseams with the bottom seam andsew along the drawn line tocreate the corners. Then trim thecorners back to the seam,leaving a 1/4" seam allowance.



Turn the outer piece right sideout so the front of the design isvisible.

Slide the outer piece into thelining so the top edges match upand the right sides are together.Then line up the side seams ofthe outer piece and lining. Pin theseams together, so they stayaligned.

Next, pin the outer piece to thelining around the top edge of thetote.



At the back side of the tote leavea 6" gap between pins. This is leftopen so the tote can be turnedright side out after sewing.

Leaving the 6" gap open andunsewn, sew a 1/2" seam aroundthe top edge of the tote.

Turn the tote right side outthrough the 6" opening. Push thelining inside the outer piece sothat the lining fits perfectly insidethe tote.



Along the 6" opening, fold theraw edges in by 1/2". Then pinthem together.

Pin the lining to the outer pieceall along the top edge, makingsure the seam stays right on thetop edge. Then topstitch a 1/4"seam around the top edge of thetote to sew the two layerstogether and close the opening.

To make the straps, cut twopieces of leather so that theymeasure 1 1/2" wide by 16" long.Round the ends if desired.



With a ruler, measure 3/4" in fromeither side. Mark two dots - onethat is 1" up from the bottomedge, and the other 2" up fromthe bottom edge. This is wherethe holes for the rivets will go.

Using an awl or hole punch,make two holes where marked.

Repeat the previous step tomeasure, mark, and punch theholes on the opposite end of thesame strap.



Repeat the previous step againto measure, mark, and punch theholes on both ends of the secondstrap.

Now it's time to mark where theholes will go on the tote.

Starting on the front, left side,measure in 6" from the seam.Make the first mark 1/2" up fromthe bottom edge of the top band.Make the second mark 1 1/2" upfrom the same bottom edge.

Repeat this process to mark thefront, right side. Measure in 6"from the right-side seam, andmark 1/2" and 1 1/2" up from thebottom edge of the top band.



With the same measurements asthe front, mark the placement forthe four holes on the back side ofthe tote as well.

Use an awl to punch a holethrough all four marks on thefront of the tote.

Repeat to make the four holes onthe back of the tote.



Line up the holes on one end ofthe first strap with the left holeson the front of the tote. Follow themanufacturer’s instructions to setthe rivets through both the strapand the front, left side of the tote.

Bend the first strap over to lineup the holes on the other endwith the holes on the front, rightside of the tote. Make sure thestrap is not twisted. The right sideof your leather strap should befacing out. Set the rivets throughthe strap and fabric.

Repeat this process to add thestrap onto the back side of thetote. Make sure to match up theholes and ensure that sure thestrap isn't twisted.
