Spring Lambs to £176 & 415ppk Prime Hoggs to £143 & 309ppk Cull Ewes to £190 & Rams to £169

A sensational day in the sheep pens with every sheep pen full and most

of the pig pens too! A total of 4661 sheep forward and every one

finding a new home at the current high levels. Quite possibly a record

number of 3094 spring lambs were of overall decent quality and

included lambs from multiple new vendors from across the

Westcountry as well as another new buyer for good measure. Trade

overall very similar on the week with the quality giving a lift in the

SQQ of 2p to 352ppk, comparable with anywhere else in the country

over the past seven days with sizable numbers. An almost

unbelievable average per head of £142.98 was achieved. No less than

17 pens over £160 with heavy lambs topping at £176 twice for a single

and then pair of overweights from Russell & John Stevens of Crediton

who had another penful at £166.50 whilst Andy & Wendy Reed of

Blackborough reached £170.50 with a 59kg pure Suffolk lamb. Being

drawn in the ballet did RE & R Leonard of North Tawton no harm

with their pens of 54kg lambs making £168.50 and 49kgs realising

£169.50 followed by Tom Yandle of Mamhead with a dozen 50kg

Suffolk crosses at £161 with similar from R White of Coleford at

£160.50, a price matched by young up and coming flock masters Jack

& William Luckes of Totnes with a trio of their best. 47kg smart lambs

to £160 for Anthony Carter of Dawlish and 46kgs at the same money

for Ellen Yandle of Mamhead who also had 44kgs at the same money.

Best of the 44kgs to £163 for Texel’s from CJ & PJ Greenslade of

Cullompton closely followed by David Churchill of Axminster with a

single 42kg lamb at £160.50 (382ppk) closely followed by wife Joy with

a pen of six 41kgs at £160 (390ppk). David Pratt of Huntsham topped

the market per kilo with a trio of 39kg Beltex x Roussin plums at £162

or 415ppk with the next best of this weight at £150.50 (386ppk) for

Mark Moore of Holsworthy as 38kgs reached £142.50 for Steve &

Chris Jeffery of Morchard Bishop and £142 for a bunch of 44 from

Dan Hutchings of Stogumber as John Quick of Coldridge sold 37kgs

well at £141 (381ppk). Also over the £4/kg mark were 31kg Dorset

lambs from Graham Hill of Wiggaton returning £126.50 or 408ppk.

**Abattoirs are requesting that muddy lambs are belly clipped with a double comb width up the middle of the belly. Housed or grass reared lambs needn’t be bellied**

Fewer hoggs at just 270 and a typical May entry for us but still decent demand for the handyweight well finished hoggs with

Richard & Elaine Peeke of Totnes selling 50kgs at £143 and several other pens of heavies around £140 as Graham Doidge

of Modbury sold 45kg Blue Texel’s at £139 or a market topping 309ppk followed closely by Paul Rusden of Ideford with

44kgs at £135 (307ppk). Lighter hoggs included many hillbred hoggs and a few stores and sold well considering with a 43kg

Jacob at £124.50, 42kg Scotch hoggs to £117.50 and 36kg Herdwicks at £88.50. Mature sheep similar and trading to £130 and 278ppk (43kgs at £119.50).

£83 (177ppk). Overweights to £85 for AJ Carter of Dawlish and £81.50 for Paul West of Holbeton. Other 50-52kg

lambs selling at £85 for Tripp Bros & Sons of Dunsford £84.20 for Tony Pickard of South Molton, £82.80 for Ken

smart 41kg lambs rose to 180 & 178ppk or £73.80 & £72.80 respectively. A great line up of well finished light lambs

from 28 to 39kgs saw top per head of £66 achieved by both Blackaton Manor Farms of Widecombe with 39kg

Cheviots and also of 38kg Suffolk crosses from Abel Bros of Tavistock who also parted with 33kg Welsh lambs at

£56.20, 31kg hill lambs at £54, 30kgs at £53.20 (177ppk) and a large pen of 28kg Scotties at £48.20. Overall average is

just a penny better at 170ppk.

367 CULL EWES & 20 RAMS/WETHERS

A short entry of just under 400 cull sheep sold with a better feel to the trade as mule and other medium weight ewes

were noticeably dearer than seen in a long time. Best crossbred ewes to £90 for a pair of Black Texels from Tracey

Pike of Luppit, £89.50, £88.50 & £86 for penfuls of strong Suffolk crosses from Tom Yandle of Mamhead and £87 for

similar from Tim Whitley of Widecombe. Others £75 to £84 depending on breed, condition and weight. Best mules as

mentioned looking £6-£9 dearer on the week with two pens selling at £77.50 & £74.50 for Brad Simmons of

Thorndon Cross, £76.50 for Ellen Yandle of Mamhead and a meated run from Sam Ursell of Tedburn St Mary sold to

£76, £74.50, £73 & £72.50. Hill ewes fewer in number and often £30 to £40 with no real strength present and very

few lots sold under £25. Rams a touch stronger trade too with Brad Simmons also topping these with a weighty

Suffolk selling at £99 followed by AJ Carter with a Texel at £92.50 and B Moseley of Hittisleigh realised £89. All cull

sheep averaged £62, which is up £10 on the week, half of the lift is due to quality, the other half is the strength of

trade.

Cull ewes out in force once again with 1297 penned and sold and although in general all but the best would be back £5-10

on the week, our quality today wouldn’t compare to previous weeks with far more hill bred types forward (still selling

well) and also far more plain, lame and lazy which were a more variable trade than recently seen. Paul Quick & family of

Zeal Monachorum taking top honours in both ram and ewe section at £169 with a Charollais tup and £190 for a pen of

Texel ewes. Further pens of Texel ewes at £189 for Angus & Sue Howie of Meeth, £183 & 160 for Russell & John Stevens

and £182 for CJ & PJ Greenslade as Andrew Hodgson of Cullompton sold a smart Black Texel type ewe at £177. Steve

Harris of Littlehempston sold a trio of Charollais ewes at £160, Derek Arnold of Marchard Road claimed £149 for his pen

of Continental ewes, Texels from Will Braund of Holsworthy at £145 as Andy & Wendy Reed received the same for

Suffolk’s and Colin Pople of Bridgewater also had £145 for a pen of strong Texel cross ewes. Four vendors selling their

best Suffolk cross ewes at £139 and plenty of heavy ewes of any breed either side of £130. The best Scotch, Jacob and

Whiteface Dartmoor ewes all selling in excess of £75 with leaner, lighter and often plain sorts from £25 to £55. Overall average of £100 is back by £8.

RURAL REFLECTION JANUARY 2021

Here we go! 2020 has passed and we look forward to a brighter and less restricted 2021. I appreciate January will be extremely difficult for many but there is plenty to be positive about going forward. Finally the UK has struck a deal with Europe in which praise has to be given to our Prime Minster. From what I hear and understand the deal is progressive for the UK and importantly for our farmers we can continue to trade with Europe without any export tariffs. This coupled with the additional cheaper and less complicated Covid-19 Vaccine which begins its role out today, is a huge mile stone in the fight against Covid-19. Let’s hope that by Easter we will be back to some normality.

With regards to professional matters a large proportion of Basic Payment Scheme claimants should now have received their Basic Payment Scheme payments. As always please please please, check these amounts. Look in detail at the Claim Statement that arrived in the post and compare the figures on the Claim Statement to the Basic Payment Scheme Application you submitted back in the Spring. If you have any queries, give your Kivells office a call and we can input the data and confirm your payments are correct. If indeed they are incorrect a payment query form needs to be submitted to the RPA as soon as possible.

Staying with the Basic Payment and as Claire Quick mentioned in our December Rural Reflection we are about to see significant changes with the Basic Payment Scheme. The final payment year is to be 2027, with reductions starting in 2021. The table below sets out the cuts for the next four scheme years (see below).

Going forward the Agricultural Bill sees the phasing out of the Basic Payment Scheme, Delink of Direct Payments (BPS) and the introduction of the New Environmental Management Scheme. DEFRA have outlined the key changes with the main aspects being;

Payments to be delinked from land in 2024.

Possible exit scheme with lump sum payments equivalent to remaining BPS payments to farmers who leave the sector.

Cross compliance to remain until 2024, when it will then be replaced.

Alterations to the inspections regime including ‘greater communication rather than instant penalties’.

Money taken away from BPS to be reinvested in other schemes for farmers

On other matters, the Mid-Tier Countryside Stewardship continues to prove to be a positive scheme. Businesses throughout the South West have come to the conclusion that the Mid-Tier Countryside Stewardship allows for additional income relating to land parcel options, with the other significant benefit being the vast amount of capital works available (in many cases being livestock fencing).

It is worth mentioning that the Countryside Stewardship Scheme will continue to be available with the last new applications being accepted in 2023. Anyone that has a Countryside Stewardship Agreement that starts after January 2021, who gets offered a new Environmental Land Management Scheme, will be able to withdraw and transfer to the new scheme with no penalty. Therefore anyone considering applying for a new Countryside Stewardship agreement in 2021, it is worth looking to see what options are out there. I hasten to add as a firm we have put together some wonderful Countryside Stewardship agreements that have provided significant additional incomes but also large capital investment that has improved farm infrastructure considerably.

2020 saw a massive year for Kivells and the farm and land market with 2020 proving one of our best years (for transactional activity) in a decade both in terms of farms launched and farms sold. Going forward 2021 in shaping up to follow suit with a

number of farms scheduled to hit the open market. With continued outside investment and a great serge for property in the West Country we remain confident that the land and farms market remains buoyant for 2021. As ever, if you require a confidential discussion on any aspects of purchasing or selling, please contact your local Kivells office.

Utility companies remain busy with various ongoing projects throughout the South West which often means land and farming businesses witnessing damages to land. Although not advised by the incoming utility company, we as agents are here to ensure you are fairly compensated for all costs created from the required works. Whether it’s a cost for the loss of Winter Wheat in the ground or your time spent on the phone dealing with problems which has arisen from the works whereby quite frankly you have other, more important matters that require your attention. The incoming utilities are often of the opinion a few grass seeds will put matters right. When you sit down and work out the costs it is often well in excess. Please get in contact with us if you have a utility company ‘Knocking on the door’ looking to enter your property. Negotiations and your concerns need to be ironed out from day one.

Finally, the Kivells machinery sales team both here at Exeter and Holsworthy have reported an exceptional 2020 with onsite sales being conducted throughout the South West often under very difficult circumstances relating to Covid-19. One of the highlights of the year being the Retirement Sale of Dayment & Skelton Agricultural Engineers with over 1100 lots going under the hammer. 2021 is looking to follow suit combined with our busy collection sales at both Holsworthy and Exeter. If you require information and advice on the sale of machinery whether online, onsite or at our collective sales please contact the machinery sales team. We will be pleased to offer confidential advice ensuring strong prices coupled with a well organised, safe and professional sale.

As I finished this month’s Rural Reflection the BBC news app has just pinged to inform me that Boris will be addressing the nation at 8pm tonight. Please remain safe and I wish you all the very best for 2021.
