2012 GBE Country Analyses 1 RESTRICTED REPORT ANALYSIS OF INDUSTRIAL AND/OR COMMERCIAL SECTORS WITH INTENSIVE USE OF HEATING AND COOLING Food Processing and Tourism (Wellness&SPA Centers) – Brandenburg Region, Germany Index 1. Description of the domain-area of intervention and reasons for his choice For the purposes of the GBE Factory market analysis, high-energy consumption branches have been analyzed among the main sectors representing the industrial structure of the German Region of Brandenburg. The market analyses cover the Bundesland Brandenburg. Brandenburg has a size of 29.478,61 km2 and a population of 2,497 mill. Brandenburg is surrounding the German Capital Berlin (another 3,5 mill. inhabitants). The market analyses should have discovered suitable branches to be chosen for further GBE- factory activities; met needs and interests of stakeholders and lead to 2 focus groups covering 7 companies In particular, the focus was put on Hotels/SPA centers and on food-processing companies as very appropriate for GBE-FACTORY interventions. Stakeholders in these branches already shown interest in being addressed by GBE-factory project. Other representative branches also characterized by very high energy consumption (i.e. Metal, Chemistry, Paper production) in fact have not been selected either because already provided with similar solutions or because already very structured internally and not needing external consulting. 2. Analysis of energy consumption in domain-area : a. through yearly data issued by distributors of energy (gas and electricity) , others Having a look to energy consumption and intensity in Germany split to different branches, Metal, Chemistry but also Paper in absolute figures are dominating the energy consumption in Germany and in Brandenburg (Frauenhofer/Statistische Bundesamt/Amt für Statistik Berlin-Brandenburg). Better data for Brandenburg were not available. Therefore three local experts (Clustermanager Energy, Energy Technology Initiative and Bioenergy Promotion ) were interviewed in order to identify which branches could be best suitable for Brandenburg.

RESTRICTED REPORTANALYSIS OF INDUSTRIAL AND/OR COMMERCIAL SECTORS

WITH INTENSIVE USE OF HEATING AND COOLINGFood Processing and Tourism (Wellness&SPA Centers) – Brandenburg Region, Germany

Index1. Description of the domain-area of intervention and reasons for his choice

For the purposes of the GBE Factory market analysis, high-energy consumption branches havebeen analyzed among the main sectors representing the industrial structure of the GermanRegion of Brandenburg. The market analyses cover the Bundesland Brandenburg. Brandenburghas a size of 29.478,61 km2 and a population of 2,497 mill. Brandenburg is surrounding theGerman Capital Berlin (another 3,5 mill. inhabitants). The market analyses should have discovered suitable branches to be chosen for further GBE-factory activities; met needs and interests of stakeholders and lead to 2 focus groups covering 7companiesIn particular, the focus was put on Hotels/SPA centers and on food-processing companies as veryappropriate for GBE-FACTORY interventions. Stakeholders in these branches already showninterest in being addressed by GBE-factory project. Other representative branches alsocharacterized by very high energy consumption (i.e. Metal, Chemistry, Paper production) in facthave not been selected either because already provided with similar solutions or becausealready very structured internally and not needing external consulting.

2. Analysis of energy consumption in domain-area :a. through yearly data issued by distributors of energy (gas and electricity) , others

Having a look to energy consumption and intensity in Germany split to different branches,Metal, Chemistry but also Paper in absolute figures are dominating the energy consumptionin Germany and in Brandenburg (Frauenhofer/Statistische Bundesamt/Amt für StatistikBerlin-Brandenburg).Better data for Brandenburg were not available. Therefore three local experts(Clustermanager Energy, Energy Technology Initiative and Bioenergy Promotion) wereinterviewed in order to identify which branches could be best suitable for Brandenburg.

It turned out that Metal, Chemistry and Paper branches were NOT recommended becauseeither they’ve investigated a lot in the issue in the past and implemented solutions alreadyor are rather too big in size for asking / demanding external advice. But it was recommended to focus on Food industry (characterized by high energy intensitywith absolutely high figures of energy consumption) -some companies showed interestalready; and Tourism - in terms of thermal baths and hotels (a hot topic in this branch).

b. on responses to the survey questionnaire sent to sample SMEsFOOD INDUSTRY:General optimization potential, mostly in cross-section techniques: i.e. compressed air;refrigeration; air conditioning; lighting; cleaning.Higher energy efficiency through waste recycling (like in a biogas plant).

TOURISM INDUSTRY:Primary energy demand in baths. High heat demand in the sauna, in swimming pools(continuous evaporation of water surface), hot water by showering. Power consumption andheat sink requirements during summer months. Possible Improvement: relatively simplemeasures can generate 50% energy savings (i.e. pool cover; demand controlled ventilation;saving circuits; insulation, etc.). Possible measures in almost all areas: electrical engineering;heating; ventilation; water; the building itself.

4. Existence and willingness of SMEs to invest GBEFACTORY

The optimization of energy costs is an ISSUE for all interviewed companies: 19 of 20 interviewedcompanies need enhancement of energy efficiency (exception: 1 new thermal bath).Higher relevance is given to “energy efficiency issue” than to “renewable energies issue”.Most companies consider energy source as second-rate; price is the critical factor, especially forSMEs. Larger SMEs mainly have an active energy management, they are often already in anadvanced process optimization.

Many Food Processing companies are involved in cluster and network activities; therefore theyreceive already multifaceted advice and information. The production process in manufacturing companies is often very complex, therefore specializedand technical solutions are more important than standard advice.

5. Considerations on the potentials and possible early GBEFACTORY interventionsEnergy-saving measures can easily lead to considerable improvements, especially for Hotels/SPAfacilities and for companies processing food. In the first case also public image is concerned.Going green is very important for this kind of activities. The analysis produced 4 categories of investigated firms:

Category 1: Companies / baths without urgent needs (satisfactory energy-situation in thecompany; energy advice and support already secured; implementation of optimization measuresin the near future unlikely; Efficiency measures to be carried out without external help).Category 2: Companies / baths: measures for the energy-optimization already designed;Financial support needed to implement them (need for advice on subsidies, i.e. local specialistsZAB, Zukunft Agentur Brandenburg).Category 3: Companies / baths: measures for energy optimization already planned but not yet

decided on time and specific measures. Companies are reluctant to implement RES solutions forthe any difficulty in identifying appropriate technical and legal advice. Through the mediation ofad hoc specialists for each company’s need the implementation process could be promoted.Category 4: Firms that recognize the need for energy optimization of their business since longtime, practical ideas for solving the problem, however, are only just at the beginning stage.Companies in this category expressed highest need for support. In particular 9 companies were recommended for assistance.
