Clinical Activities

I have maintained operative privileges at both the University of Nebraska Medical Center

and the Omaha VA Medical Center since 1999. I have performed the great majority of my

operative procedures at the VA; this has afforded me control over my schedule, thus facilitating

my research endeavors. Of note, all operative procedures involve residents from either UNMC or

Creighton University.

Up until the early 2010’s, I was one of three surgeons covering the Omaha VA. As a result, I

had the opportunity to perform an array of cases, including:

1. Thyroidectomy

2. Parathyroidectomy

3. Esophagectomy, open and minimally invasive

4. Nissen fundoplication, minimally invasive

5. Paraesophageal hernia repair, minimally invasive

6. Heller myotomy, minimally invasive

7. Partial and total gastrectomy, open and minimally invasive

8. Pancreaticoduodenectomy, open

9. Adrenalectomy, open and minimally invasive

10. Splenectomy, open and minimally invasive

11. Partial colectomy, open and minimally invasive

12. Proctectomy (APR and LAR), open and minimally invasive

CV (Carlson, Mark A.)

All of the above operative activity was in addition to core general surgery procedures,

including cholecystectomy, appendectomy, incisional herniorrhaphy, groin herniorrhaphy, and

emergency general surgery. Since the early 2010’s, the Omaha VA Surgery Department grew

and diversified. Currently, specialists are now available in Surgical Endocrinology, Surgical

Oncology, Hepatobiliary Surgery, and Colorectal Surgery. As a result of this change, I have

focused my clinical practice to the following areas:

1. Large incisional hernia surgery/abdominal wall reconstruction

2. Reoperative groin hernia surgery

3. Reoperative antireflux surgery

4. Complex GI surgery

I still perform all the above core general surgery procedures as well. This evolution in the

scope of my clinical practice has enabled growth in my research activities. Although my research

career has grown and prospered, I still have been able to maintain an active clinical practice in

surgery.
