What It Takes To Be

“Prophetable” Mark 6:14-29

Page 13: Mark 6:14-29 14 King Herod heard about this, for Jesus’ name had become well known. Some were saying, “John the Baptist has been raised from the dead,

Do you know that God wants

you to be “prophetable”? Success is NOT whether or not

you make a profit, but whether or not you become a prophet.

CONCERNING THE HERODS:

Herod is a name in scripture that is referring to a family and not just one person, like “Pharaoh” referred

to a ruler of Egypt.

Page 15: Mark 6:14-29 14 King Herod heard about this, for Jesus’ name had become well known. Some were saying, “John the Baptist has been raised from the dead,

The Herod mentioned the most in scripture is Herod Antipas.

Son of Herod the Great Romans divided his kingdom up

among 3 of his sons. Antipas received the region of

Galilee and Perea. Jesus & John did most of their

ministering in Galilee and Perea.

Page 16: Mark 6:14-29 14 King Herod heard about this, for Jesus’ name had become well known. Some were saying, “John the Baptist has been raised from the dead,
Page 17: Mark 6:14-29 14 King Herod heard about this, for Jesus’ name had become well known. Some were saying, “John the Baptist has been raised from the dead,

We know of 2 times when Jesus had close encounters or contact with Herod.

…saying to Him, “Go away, leave here, for Herod wants to kill You.” 32And He said to them, “Go and tell that fox, ‘Behold, I cast out demons and perform cures today and tomorrow, and the third day I reach My goal.’ 33Nevertheless I must journey on today and tomorrow and the next day; for it cannot be that a prophet would perish outside of Jerusalem.” (Luke 13:31-33)

Then in Jerusalem when Jesus is about to die He stands before Pilate who finds out He is a Galilean so he sends Him to Herod

6When Pilate heard it, he asked whether the man was a Galilean. 7And when he learned that He belonged to Herod’s jurisdiction, he sent Him to Herod, who himself also was in Jerusalem at that time.

Herodias Granddaughter of Herod the Great. Daughter of Arastabunous Arastabunous had a ½ brother

named Phillip and another ½ brother named Antipas.

Page 20: Mark 6:14-29 14 King Herod heard about this, for Jesus’ name had become well known. Some were saying, “John the Baptist has been raised from the dead,

She married Phillip, her uncle Anitpas married a woman from a

kingdom to the east. They go visit Phillip and Herodias,

(she is a niece to both these men) Antipas and Herodias become

attracted to each other, put away their mates and return to Galilee as husband and wife.

Page 21: Mark 6:14-29 14 King Herod heard about this, for Jesus’ name had become well known. Some were saying, “John the Baptist has been raised from the dead,

Antipas and Herodias like to consider themselves Jews (when it was politically correct). Herod had some Jewish ancestry in

his Edomite background, Herodias was granddaughter of Mary Amni (from the famous Maccabee family of the Jews)

Page 22: Mark 6:14-29 14 King Herod heard about this, for Jesus’ name had become well known. Some were saying, “John the Baptist has been raised from the dead,

They thought of themselves as Jews above the law.

They paid no attention to the law of Moses regarding their marriage.

Page 23: Mark 6:14-29 14 King Herod heard about this, for Jesus’ name had become well known. Some were saying, “John the Baptist has been raised from the dead,

CONCERNING THE HERALD:But a prophet (John) goes on record that the law of Moses says that you cannot marry your brother’s wife unless your brother has died & he has born no children by this woman. 18For John had been saying to Herod,

“It is not lawful for you to have your brother’s wife.”

He tells Herod this over and over...

Page 24: Mark 6:14-29 14 King Herod heard about this, for Jesus’ name had become well known. Some were saying, “John the Baptist has been raised from the dead,

Tension is mounting in the east... the king is furious that his daughter has been sent home & Herod does not need John’s talk. He decides to arrest John, but not execute him.

17For Herod himself had sent and had John arrested and bound in prison on account of Herodias, the wife of his brother Philip, because he had married her.

Page 25: Mark 6:14-29 14 King Herod heard about this, for Jesus’ name had become well known. Some were saying, “John the Baptist has been raised from the dead,

Herod does not want to execute John but he also does not want him out there preaching. Herod likes to slip off down to the dungeon & listen to John.

19Herodias had a grudge against him and wanted to put him to death and could not do so; 20for Herod was afraid of John, knowing that he was a righteous and holy man, and he kept him safe. And when he heard him, he was very perplexed; but he used to enjoy listening to him.

Page 26: Mark 6:14-29 14 King Herod heard about this, for Jesus’ name had become well known. Some were saying, “John the Baptist has been raised from the dead,

Isn’t that strange? He doesn’t want John to preach

but he keeps going to hear him... People love good preaching

more than good living. NOW Herodias on the other hand,

doesn’t like good preaching or good living.

Page 27: Mark 6:14-29 14 King Herod heard about this, for Jesus’ name had become well known. Some were saying, “John the Baptist has been raised from the dead,

EXECUTING THE PLAN:Herodias dumped Phillip because Phillip was content to just stay in Rome & be a nobody. She is a climber & she married Antipas because he was going places and John is a threat!

Page 28: Mark 6:14-29 14 King Herod heard about this, for Jesus’ name had become well known. Some were saying, “John the Baptist has been raised from the dead,

She wants John silenced. So she took it upon herself to plot exactly how to do that.

21A strategic day came when Herod on his birthday gave a banquet for his lords and military commanders and the leading men of Galilee; 22and when the daughter of Herodias herself came in and danced

Page 29: Mark 6:14-29 14 King Herod heard about this, for Jesus’ name had become well known. Some were saying, “John the Baptist has been raised from the dead,

she pleased Herod and his dinner guests; and the king said to the girl, “Ask me for whatever you want and I will give it to you.” 23And he swore to her, “Whatever you ask of me, I will give it to you; up to half of my kingdom.” 24And she went out and said to her mother,

“What shall I ask for?” And she said, “The head of John the Baptist.” 25Immediately she came in a hurry to the king and asked, saying, “I want you to give me at once the head of John the Baptist on a platter.”

Page 31: Mark 6:14-29 14 King Herod heard about this, for Jesus’ name had become well known. Some were saying, “John the Baptist has been raised from the dead,

EXECUTING THE MAN:26And although the king was very sorry, yet because of his oaths and because of his dinner guests, he was unwilling to refuse her 27Immediately the king sent an executioner and commanded him to bring back his head.

Page 32: Mark 6:14-29 14 King Herod heard about this, for Jesus’ name had become well known. Some were saying, “John the Baptist has been raised from the dead,

And he went and had him beheaded in the prison, 28and brought his head on a platter, and gave it to the girl; and the girl gave it to her mother. 29When his disciples heard about this, they came and took away his body and laid it in a tomb.

Page 33: Mark 6:14-29 14 King Herod heard about this, for Jesus’ name had become well known. Some were saying, “John the Baptist has been raised from the dead,

Three important lessons from each of the main characters. 1. Learn first from John that

acknowledging and announcing are two different things. John was not a prophet because

he thought Herod was wrong, He was a prophet because he said Herod was wrong.

Page 34: Mark 6:14-29 14 King Herod heard about this, for Jesus’ name had become well known. Some were saying, “John the Baptist has been raised from the dead,

2. Learn from Herod - conviction and conversion are two different things.

Herod is close to the kingdom of God but he is also far away from the kingdom of God.

Page 35: Mark 6:14-29 14 King Herod heard about this, for Jesus’ name had become well known. Some were saying, “John the Baptist has been raised from the dead,

Jesus never sent a disciple into the world with the message, “Be distressed for the kingdom of

God is at hand” But He always said tell them “repent

for the kingdom of God is at hand” God didn’t say feel kinda bad about

your sin, God said REPENT!

Page 36: Mark 6:14-29 14 King Herod heard about this, for Jesus’ name had become well known. Some were saying, “John the Baptist has been raised from the dead,

3. Learn from Mark... Mark is the storyteller and his point is that

successful & faithful are two different things. He puts the story of John’s death inside the

story of the mission of the disciples to go out and be representatives of Jesus Christ.

If you are going to be an ambassador for Jesus you are going to get the attention of the Herods of this world.

Page 37: Mark 6:14-29 14 King Herod heard about this, for Jesus’ name had become well known. Some were saying, “John the Baptist has been raised from the dead,

What does it mean to be Prophetable?

It means like John... if you are going to speak for Jesus you must lay down your life.

The issue is not, whether or not you are successful, it’s whether you are faithful.
