“Air Quality in Port” 

As time goes by, environment issues are getting important components of the management and operation of port activities. Closecooperation between port authorities and their stakeholders is identified as essential for port development, considering the increasingsignificance of sustainable port area management. According to the ESPO-EcoPorts Port Environmental Review 2009 in 2010, air quality inport was pointed out as the second environmental priority by the European port sector as a whole. Pollutants (or Contaminants) of airquality are a major issue in port. After identifying the nature and the source of such emissions, the aim of this presentation is to discuss thesolutions available in terms of cleanup efforts both internationally and regionally and to what extent these efforts may affect ports and theircustomers.

Prof. Dr. Seong-Hyeok (Daniel) MOON is currently an INMARSAT CHAIR Professor of World Maritime University (WMU). Prof. MOONearned his PhD degree in Port Economics from the Cardiff University, UK. His area of teaching and research interest has been closelyrelated to ports in terms of management, operation and logistics. He also has a specialty in MET based upon his experiences in educatingstudents at Korea Maritime University (KMU) where he has worked for more than 25 years. He has got a qualified First Class NavigationCertificate (non-limited) and been aboard the ship more than 10 years including experiences of a chief mate at HMM and a captain at KMU

Training Ship. He has widely published articles and books which are concerned with ports and MET. He has been involved in manyresearch projects for public organisations as well as private companies. He is a member of the Institute of Logistics and Transport and ofthe Chartered Institute of Transport and the International Association of Maritime Economists (IAME).

“GREEN SHIPPING AND ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT: Update on green initiatives in the Asian shipping sector” 

In this presentation, the speaker will cover various topics pertinent to the issue of green shipping and environmental management,including understanding the impact of the maritime industry on the global environment, best practices and strategies for the implementationof green technologies, retrofitting technological advances into existing facilities, and how shipowners, port operators and logistics operatorscould work together to reduce the overall footprint of trade.

Mr Thomas Timlen is currently Asia Liaison Officer of BIMCO Asia Representative Office. Previously he has served as Head of BIMCO’sSecurity and International Affairs Department. Amongst positions held in Singapore he has served as a Visiting Research Fellow at the S.Rajaratnam School of International Studies, a graduate program of Nanyang Technological University. His career in shipping began in theClaims and Insurance Section of ScanDutch A/S. He has represented BIMCO during sessions of the IMO Maritime Safety Committee and

Facilitation Committee as well as at sessions of the World Customs Organization and the International Organization for Standardization. Heholds a BSc in Business Administration from Boston University.

“ Green Shipping and Climatic Change: The Effect on South East Asia  – Scenario by 2050” 

The ongoing global warming of the climatic system is unequivocal. The effects of this represent a threat to society and existinginfrastructure, but is also unveils new possibilities. As the challenges need to be met, we are obliged to explore these opportunities. Asstated by William Pollard; “Innovation is the ability to see change as an opportunity, not a threat” . By the year 2050, the global populationand economic growth will have increased the trans-continental trade significantly. The melting of the Arctic ice will provide opportunities fortrans-arctic transport. The Northern Sea Rout (NSR) along the Siberian coast will be open. This development will encourage innovativethinking within ship design and logistical solutions. The limitations on ship size, stemming from the traditional routes through the Suez andPanama canals, will no longer be applicable. DnV (Norway) has design a huge modular ship that can operate efficiently in both open waterand ice. For propulsion, the ship uses hydrogen fuel cells as well as kites. This is only one scenario. Dr Ramberg’s presentation will try toenlighten new thinking and explore opportunities for the maritime industries in Singapore and East Asia as well as opportunities for globalcooperation.

Professor Bengt Ramberg has hold key international positions with maritime industries for 35 years. The last 12 years he served as VicePresident Supply Chain Management with Wallenius Wilhelmsen Logistics (Norway) in the company’s change from Port -to-Port shipping,into a global Door-to-Door logistics company. Dr Ramberg has for more than 20 years been Adjunct Professor with BI Norwegian School ofManagement in the field of Maritime Logistic. As from January 2010, he is Visiting Professor in Maritime Studies with NTU.
